He played better when he dropped back in the 2nd half and crouch and adam were taken off. The team had a better shape and movement about it. Bojan was very good when he was on his game but I think Joe contributes more and is a more consistent player. I agree that I think he may need a break as he has played a lot of football if you include last years euros.

He's not a number 10 and he needs to play alongside Whelan as the box to box midfielder.
Affelay is the player I'd play as the number 10 because he's good at holding onto the ball in tight situations and he's a much better passer than Allen. I'd even be tempted to give Imbula another run ahead of Allen as the more advanced midfielder of the 3.

Really, really, glad this lad was not transferred. Perhaps more than anything , other than the stick Crouchy gets,
I completely fail to understand why some Stokies simply dont rate the guy and recently even wanted him gone.
He's a key piece of our engine room - but form has been a bit patchy
Joe Allen - Cracking player for Stoke City IMHO !

When he played high up the pitch he was a genuine goal threat however he doesn't have the vision or link play so that ended up sticking out like a sore thumb. Further back suits him down to the ground.

The key to a successful season will be if he can play his natural game further back AND still get to the edge of the box when there may be a chance of him scoring - such as at corners, free kicks etc.

Allen can do this. Two of the back three need to as well.

How some fans always have to find a whipping boy is beyond me. I am a fan of Joe Allen and think we should get behind the players instead of slagging them off

I am a fan of Joe Allen and think we should get behind the players instead of slagging them off Could it be that this is a public forum where fans of Stoke City can discuss and share opinions on the club and it's employees? Like I've said before, Stoke fans have an obsession with players who run around a lot, they always have. Doesn't matter if that player has no end product and brings little to the team, they love him like they'd love a cocker spaniel. It stems from a lack of footballing knowledge, which of course is fine. I mean realistically what does he bring to the team? He has no technical ability or vision so he won't create a damn thing in midfield. He's not quick or powerful and he's not got the discipline or awareness to defend well. So he's not a number 10, he's not a DM and he's not a box to box. What he is, is a player who runs around a lot chasing the ball and when he doesn't get it he's well out of position leaving big gaps in the midfield. He had a purple patch and bagged a few goals, something he's never done before and won't again. Apart from that he's been pretty ineffective.

Yes, Stoke fans love a player who puts in lots of effort and is trying his best, compared with some other players. But I also think Stoke fans are intelligent enough to recognise when there is no end product. In Joe's case there has been end product with goals and assists although probably not enough to warrant persisting with him in the #10 position. I've posted before that Joe reminds me of a young Josh Mahoney when he arrived from Crewe. In his first couple of seasons he dashed about a lot to little effect and eventually got dropped from the first choice XI when Waddington bought Ritchie back and Greenhoff, and Dobing started playing deeper. When Dobing dropped out of the side Mahoney moved back in and was a very accomplished player during Stoke's great mid-70s era.

Joe has started this season very well! If people can't see this I would say they know very little about football! I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I'm entitled to one too!

You say he has no end product yet he was one of our leading goal scorers last season! I agree that he did run out of steam last season, perhaps due to playing in Euro 2016 until the final stages (where he made the team of the tournament - not bad for a player with no technical ability or vision) and not having much of a break before the start of the season. Hopefully this season he will do better still now he is playing in his more natural position. By the way, I don't like Cocker Spaniels much, but as I obviously have no footballing knowledge, I am so glad that you are here to educate me!
