Is it just me who thinks besides his 4 goals at the start of the season. He hasnt been this absolute star man everyone rates him as? He has had some good games dont get me wrong but i find at times he can be a right headless chicken.
Its an awkward one for me, bojan is a miles better number 10. He can create chances.
But when allen is played in the middle then he becomes this headless chicken sometimes....
Thoughts?

If headless chicken means actually closing down the opposition rather than standing there then yeah, i agree with you. Jesus wept, he's had 1 off game! Been in our top 3 for player of the season !

But when allen is played in the middle then he becomes this headless chicken sometimes.... Thoughts? Nah, I thought yesterday was his first iffy performance. We didn't see a lot of the ball granted, but when we did, our midfield were guilty of wasting it. I've not levelled that at us, not being able to keep hold of the ball, for a while. I think there's two things, Allen and Adam both had a bit of an off game in possession, and Manchester United are a very good side. Collectively we did well out of possession, whilst it was all them, we can consider ourselves unlucky. Joe Allen's a fine player, don't be so hard on him I've been reading a bit of Adam bashing on other threads as well, it's all pretty unwarranted in my opinion. I'll tell you what I noticed yesterday, and I'm not knocking our foreign lads, just making an observation, Glen Whelan, Ryan Shawcross, Charlie Adam, Phil Bardsley, Joe Allen and Glen Johnson were the first lads in on the car park and they were the first lads out on the pitch in the warm up too. A small thing, I know, but a thing still

Probably our best player, just competition from Arnie in my opinion! Yesterday he gave the ball away too easily, but also yesterday he worked his socks off and contributed hugely to our point! Would anyone really have replaced him with Bojan yesterday!!?? I must remind you all we actually got a point!

I thought he and the team as a whole looked a lot better when Afellay came on and showed some composure in midfield.

i thought he was a bit below par today, but hes entitled to an off day, hes been immense since he got here, as someones said elsewhere, we'l play better and win, and as frustrating as the there 150th minute equalizer was, u have to be honest, on another day they could have scored 4..

Yesterday his first bad game? Do people actually properly watch games?
He's been poor for the last 4 or so games. Problem with most fans if they see lots of running around and they think that's playing well.
Lately he's like a dog chasing a balloon, lots of chasing the ball but with little common sense or brains in his play. He leaves huge gaps in the middle which teams then just over run us.
There is also better players at linking the front 3 up as well. It was an odd buy being as we never needed him in the first place.
Take away those goals early on and he's been ok at best, he certainly isn't the answer for the number 10 role.
I'm not saying he's a bad player but he needs to lose the Klopp effect of closing everything down quickly because that needs to be done by the whole team or as above he ends up way out of position and leaves us exposed.

If about 3 misplaced passed despite him having a good game overall opens him up for criticism some people really won't be happy. His energy yesterday was amazing.

He's a good footballer, but the way we play, we should set up with two defensive midfielders and one attacking/creative midfielder. Unfortunately, he isn't either of those.

You are not alone but you are definitely in a minority.
I'm not a fan at all and actually think he's pretty crap at almost everything apart from running around at lot.
The similarities with dean whitehead, one of my least favourite stoke players of all time, are frightening.

I don't know what to make of Joe to be frank . He's not really a number ten or a sitting midfielder. I have to be honest I thought his passing would be much better than it is, however on the other hand he's scored a few for us which is very welcome indeed.
He has a good engine and presses all the time but this often leaves gaps behind when players like Whelan don't follow suit.
IMO our ideal formation is a back four with two sitting midfielders and I'm not sure Joe fits into that. It's a bit of a conundrum. He's a very good player though.

Had a bit of a stinker yesterday but has had a good season. Couldn't tell you his bets position mind and not sure Hughes knows either and his arrival has caused other issues within the set up.

That is perfectly fair, and as earlier posters mentioned, it's more a question of where he fits than him being a bad player as such. His chasing everything might be because he feels he has to, because Whelan and Adam aren't mobile enough, but I feel he should channel his energy better.

This is something I've commented on a number of times, you either press everything as a team or you don't 1 player doing it on his own is quite frankly a lot of wasted energy.

Yes let's fuck him off! Waste of money and Hughes out! Some fucking idiots on here! I'm not a fan at all but that is a hysterical response if ever there was one. Finding his best position and how he can best benefit the starting 11 is surely something Hughes could do with finding out. The fact that a very decent first 20 minutes turned into a creditable backs to the wall operation was everything to do with how poor both him and crouch were. Both worked their socks off but both were pretty useless when it came to actually doing positive things in possession of a football.

He was anonymous yesterday but if people are seriously suggesting he's been poor this season, then we may as well give up.
If we're saying he hasn't been good enough then that means everybody else has been absolutely diabolical.
Even if you ignore his goals, his overall play has still been very good. He's more of an industrious player than the likes of Bojan but it's 'tardery at its very best to suggest he's just a headless chicken in the mould of Whitehead.
As things stand, he's been our best player of the season. Only Grant comes close in terms of consistency and performance levels.

I think its more the point that you just can't see any effect Hughes and the coaching staff have had on how he's playing the game its just like he's still playing for Klopp. He hasn't always played that way. His energy is great but needs using in a more considered way.
