That article is well over the top. Football is an emotional game. Yes he is highly paid but he just scored a goal after seeing the palpable frustration in the crowd and the whole team was about to get booed off at half-time. Good on Shawcross. It actually shows he GIVES A FUCK about Stoke and what the fans think. Hes hardly stuck his fingers up at the crowd. Just giving us the ear is a bit of a GEE UP to the library that BET365 has become. We are so precious at times. More like Arsenal fans every day This. He's not stupid. He knows what's being said by the fans and he can sense the mood in the stadium. He cares about this club as much as any one of us. He's probably also a bit pissed off about fans moaning and getting on the backs of players, as opposed to supporting and attempting to lift them. Due to being on the other side of the world, I can't attend games unfortunately. I have, however, seen on TV and heard from fans that attend, that the atmosphere at the stadium has become a bit toxic in recent months. No surprises that performances have dipped too. Performances on the pitch and reactions in the stands are more closely related than most seem to realize. The siege mentality that helped us through our first couple of years in the Prem is a prime example that we all witnessed. Unfortunately, our fans would rather have a good old moan and write players representing our club off, as opposed to trying to be constructive and getting behind the team. Some seem to be getting ahead of ourselves. We are Stoke and we used to be a team. Things won't always go right and we won't always play well. When that happens, we, the fans, have a role to play to help the team. Or we could throw a big wobbly and chuck our toys out the pram...

I'd have preferred it if he'd just celebrated scoring for his beloved club in a game that was very important to win and his first goal for over two years but hey ho... each to there own!

"That's the reason the fans have been concerned about our defence and that's why some of the defenders, including Ryan Shawcross, have come in for some mild criticism."
Mild criticism? There's a five page thread on here following the Chelsea game (that has since been "cleaned up") that includes a substantial amount of posts absolutely slating the lad, accusing him of being a cheat, having a negative attitude, and several saying his time is up and he should be shipped out of the club. That's a little bit more than mild criticism, don't you think? I'm sure Ryan himself would admit he's not been in the best of form recently, but he's also coming off the back of a serious injury and doesn;t deserve the kind of abuse that was peppered throughout that thread.
"I would genuinely hate to see any souring of relations between any players and the supporters so I hope we can draw a line under the whole incident right now"
Agreed - so why write a fucking article in The Sentinel slamming him for what was nowt more than a gesture of frustration? Nobody needed to draw a line under it, and the article only serves to do the exact opposite by making way more out of it than was necessary.

Well the OP is a load of shit and should probably have been binned before it had time to get going, but if Ryan or his family and friends have read it (and other messages about him) then he/they should also be aware of the hundreds (if not thousands) of posts on this message board which truly reflect just how the vast majority of Stoke fans feel about him. Maybe we should all just chill a bit?

We have become sensitive souls. So what if he cupped his fucking ears. Some abuse him saying hes gone shit , he cups his ears and some start mard arseing . And it really was the briefest of motions obviously borne out of frustration. You'd think he'd have that often overused phrase 'plenty in the bank', if it did offend your sensitive heart.
It ultimately becomes a two way street though doesn't it Sheikhy?
If it's okay for Ryan to respond to the supporters negatively, then in effect he's condoning the supporters right to react negatively to the players ... I don't like that.
I've never, ever booed a Stoke City player, I've never, ever been negative about a Stoke City player in a football ground, I just don't think you should do it, although of course some (indeed sometimes a lot of) people do, I don't like the fans being negative towards the players and I certainly don't like it the other way round, that can ultimately lead to poisonous atmospheres.
What if we now lose our next three home matches and Ryan drops some clangers?
I don't think that's being remotely 'over sensitive'.

It just wasn't a wise thing to do mate. Extremely naive. He's got plenty in the tank of course (in fact, he's got about a dozen tanks full), but he still should've know better than to question or criticise the fans. It will always cause a reaction. As we've seen with the Sentinel article and this thread. And it isn't OTT to have a reaction either. What did he expect? He's entitled to make gestures at the fans all be wants but he will always have to expect a response. Just very naive and easily avoided.

Ryan has had some stick on here and on social media. The simple solution is not to read it. What the hell do they expect? We've been generally poor for a long time. Fans have every right to vent their spleen. My opinion is that Ryan still has a load to offer and is a Stoke legend, however he's paid fantastically well for the privilege. He should shut up and get on with it. The team lose the crowd and we're royally buggered.

You make a lot of sense Paul. But what comes first? Is it Ryan reacting to abuse or the fans reacting to Ryan? For me it's very clear, Ryan is upset and giving a bit back. Whether that's wise or not can be debated till through cows come home. My point all along with this thread, is that there are supporters who give the dogs own abuse to the players, but get very sensitive when it comes back at them. So I agree it's deffo a two way street, and I'm finding it difficult to criticise the skipper for retaliating. Plus I honestly believe Smudge has gone way over the top in his article

It was a complete nothing incident, Paul. Certainly not worthy of an article in the paper when you've got Stoke fans at each others teeth all over the place already.

The article only serves to inflame what was a minor, and understandable display of frustration by the skipper. It was barely worth a mention, never mind an entire article.

Agree, he possibly should not have done it, but this is clearly a non event in my book. I am struggling to think why Smudge would make this an issue. Plus, I think Ryan is not only reacting to his personal criticism, much of which is OTT, but to the criticism of other team members and the team overall. He is Captain when all said and done, and might be trying to pull the squad together?

Believe me if there were any genuinely abusive posts towards him they would've been removed. As I've said previously, we were probably slow off the mark not binning it, because the cheating slur probably warranted it, but more than enough people have had the opportunity to put their opinion forward against that nonsense and in defence of Ryan. And Smudge's article was hardly "slamming him" was it? He's just pointed out that our defensive record for much of last year was poor and, like it or not, Ryan's played a part in that. He's also gone out of his way to point out that Ryan is loved, admired and respected by the vast majority of Stoke fans and this incident isn't going to change that. It's also worth a slight little reminder to Ryan that many Stoke fans and this fanzine have defended him to the hilt in the face of some real abuse after the Ramsey incident and also fought his corner against his criminal lack of international recognition.

Where's the issue here? I'm sure a lot of fans of other clubs say this, but I feel like we have some of the most sensitive fans around. We've got fans who will happily chant about Aaron Ramsey's broken leg, but woe betide anyone who makes the slightest negative comment about us.
People are upset because the captain has spoken out about how he feels like the fans have been getting on his and the team's back. I would agree with him, our support has been fucking shite for a long time now. We've become the typical spoilt Premier League fans that we always used to hate. It's been a long time since I felt our home crowds were actually behind the squad, and it must be shit as a player to have 25,000 of your own fans silent for 80 minutes and moaning for the other ten.
Some of the recent abuse aimed at Walters and Crouch has been ridiculous. Yes, you might not be happy about their inclusion and we might not have been playing well lately, but it's not their fault they've been picked. We won last night, but you'd be forgiven for thinking we'd have lost by several goals.
Did we moan this much when we were in the third division? Get a fucking grip you tossers. Christ, it feels like we're still losing 4-1 at home to Bristol Rovers.

We've spent a massive amount of money and are an established premier league club. We've been under performing and have been generally shit at home for the last 18 months. Our record in 2016 is appalling in so many ways. I don't blame fans one bit. The atmosphere may not be what it was but to be honest the football is shit.

Very touchy stuff from Smudge there. Shawcross using social media has probably heard about some of the filth on this messageboard about him recently and is probably a bit fed up of walking off the pitch to a wall of red seats after every match, whatever the result. Personally I find charlatans like £18M Imbula taking the piss out of every hard working Stoke fan a little harder to take than an exceptionally minor dig by the Captain but there you go. Well said that man spot on!
