Loved the passion he showed during the anthem.

That's it lads. Give him a tight back pass on a plastic pitch.
Chodders!

Debut in a shit ground, -1 degrees, artificial pitch. You show him Jack.

Starting the game with no discernible defensive midfielder, interesting. Shelvey and Barkley looking like a good pairing.

Anyone know how Shaq's playing? Just had a decent attempt on goal. Brought the ball down and cut inside.

No point in playing a defensive midfielder tonight though. There always is. From now we've got to be preparing for the Euro's. Finding someone who can protect the back 4 is key.

He's such a plodder. He looks like an owd farmer tromping round the pitch in his wellies and someones nicked the string out of his corduroy trousers. And Kyle Walker? What is it? Certainly not a footballer.

No point in playing a defensive midfielder tonight though. On that basis was there any point in playing Jack? Has he actually touched the ball apart from kicking to his defenders? Very little benefit in playing him in a game that is as competitive as this.

Very little benefit in playing him in a game that is as competitive as this. It's a great experience for him in the run up to a major tournament and one that so far will play in Hodgson's mind for the correct reasons. He's shown great concentration with the save he has made, he will be learning loads.

Well he's disguising it well! How's he looked? I've only watched a few mins. He's getting involved and looking reasonably sharp. Doesn't seem to be struggling at all. The good news is that he'll be sharper for us when he comes back after this run out.

What world a defensive midfielder be doing tonight? Next to nothing. Better to have a ball player in there against this level of opposition.

Still has a job to do, it's like the argument for not playing Butland because he won't have much to do, it's a pretty pointless one. A DM for England should be able to pass the ball too.....

Really like shelvey as a player, he is always looking for the through ball for the strikers. Can't stand all this sideways shit, especially as the ox is just rubbish. I could understand lallana not passing to ox when he has fucked up everything he has touched. Kane is just great and better than rooney in my opinion. What is with all these looping crosses they never work and keeper nearly always gets the ball. Milner kept doing it lallana has done a few times, why can't they just whip in.
As for our boy jack, he is just ace. Extremely switched on and again everything crossed for him.

It's experience for Butland. I'd prefer a positive approach in these games. No need for a holding midfielder.

It's a myth that playing a holding midfielder and a positive approach aren't compatible.
One of Barcelona's most important players is a defensive midfielder. Arsenal's invincibles had one. Brazil's last two World Cup winning sides have had them.
