He shouldn't have anything to do really. Perhaps just throw his cap on a couple of long range efforts.
It's really going to be mostly a case of coming up with some decent distribution and generally looking the part.

Jack starts on the uneven, plastic pitch.
With Given already injured, I have a horrible feeling about this.

Lithuania resembled a Sunday league team at Wembley. I don't know if they just played particularly poorly but they barely even got in our half.
I was expecting more from them.

Am absolutely fuming, having read The Guardian today, with reasons given by Hodgson, as to why he is leaving certain players st home.
Injuries, need of a rest all ensue, followed by an apology to be leaving his blond haired boy behind. I quote.
Paul Hart is being left behind 'against his will' (the apostrophes aren't mine!) because I want to see Jack Butland in goal.
The only translation is that Hart has asked to keep piling up his Caps and sod the rest of the GK's behind him.
What impertinence, indeed incredible arrogance. Above all, what a contrast to our number one whose talent is second only to his humility in recent interviews. His acceptance of many months of bench sitting is to be admired and am so glad that we have him in our colours, rather than Hart. And MH as our manager, rather than the blinkered Hodgson.
All the more delighted however, therefore to say that during a chat, at Wembley, last night with a leading and much used and acclaimed journalist, before kick-off, he was regretting the dearth of captain material leading to Cahill's promotion.
"sadly there is only one real captain in this squad, he said, "and that's Jack Butland."
Wish Jack knew and maybe one of you Twitterers could mention it?

Isn't this just Hodgson's cack-handed way of trying to show how much Hart wants to play for England, while making himself look like a manager able to make the tough decisions. "Feed the monkey" - he has a way with words does our Roy.

Absolutely ridiculous that England leave 5 at home. Joe Hart not Paul Hart wants to ramp up his England caps. Jack needs to play as he is better than Joe Hart. Jack also needs to have the experience of playing against the likes of Germany and France. You can not have one keeper playing every game!

Superb occasion. For the first time in a long time we have our man in the sticks for England. I enjoy the fact that any stoke player turns out for their country. We've got loads of them now. Great standards.

Either way Hodgson remains an owl faced cunt who pampers to the big boys and fucking Southampton I don't have a problem with him picking his best team in order to get us qualified. My problem was with him saying he would have to consult Hart before picking Butland. Sounded a bit too much like the Coleman/Ramsey/Shawcross situation for my liking. Why do international managers have to seek permission from other players before they can pick our players?

The man is a fucking revolting little pussy yes man who is too much of a beta fucking bladder to make decisions and stand by them. He reminds me of the boss who always follows everything up with "if that's okay" because he's so desperate to be liked; yet loses all respect in the process. The man is a cunt for the way he has ignored Ryan, and always will be. I like seeing Jack included, who the fuck wouldn't if they're Stoke (Ukyestoney excepted), but the Ryan debacle will always mean the man is a sickening, abhorrent, fetid steaming pile of loathsome dog shit. I fucking hate Roy Hodgson.

This thread is fucking incredible. In case people had forgotten, this is the first Stoke player to start a game of any description - let alone a competititve fixture - for England in over 30 years. An entire generation of Stokies have grown up and had kids of their own without seeing this happen. Accordingly I opened this thread expecting celebration, chest-swelling pride and abundant congratulations for Jack.
Silly me.
Instead we get nothing but matter-of-fact griping and mean spirited bile. Bile about what a wanker the manager is, ridiculous righteous anger about what a wanker Joe Hart is, selfish whining about Jack getting injured, moaning that it's not against better opposition (!), moralistic chin-stroking about who consulted who.
And of course, I'm now adding to the problem by moaning about the moaning. Just how fucking entitled have we got that this is our first reaction to news like this? I sometimes wonder why anybody watches football now, nobody seems to actually fucking like it any more.

My brother-in-law and boys only come with me to the Brit so they can listen to the whinging.

Don't get me wrong, I will be very pleased and immensely proud when he turns out. I never thought I would see a Stoke player start in a competitive match for England in my lifetime. But still, I hope he doesn't get injured.

No kudos to Hodgson for this selection.
Butland should have played at Wembly on Friday as well as tomorrow evening.
He got a simple selection decision half right. Appropriate for an England manager who seems to possess half a brain.
