What s ridiculous comparison to say Rooney scored as much as charlton Charlton never played agsjnst the likes of San marino and similar minnows!! At that time you didn't get to play such small teams against whom you could score for fun !! Also was charlton taking penalties as Rooney is for England ? before making knee jerk reactions you may want to check some facts as you're talking rubbish. Over half of charlton's goals were against the home nations (and although they were better back then than now..wales excluded...they were weak sides) charlton scored far more in friendlies than rooney has as well. No-one has ever suggested that rooney is as good a player as charlton anyway so really don't see why so many try to rubbish what rooney has achieved. pathetic really, you'd think england fans would actually be happy that england players are scoring goals. If you're so offended and annoyed by it then why watch him play and start threads about him just to fucking moan?

If I were Rooney I probably wouldn't want to break the record v san Marino.
You'd want a career defining moment to come against a more reputable opponent than them surely?

If he's on the pitch he's going to want to score goals, no matter who it's against.
He's done well for England over the years despite obvious bad moments and poor games at tournaments. The number he's scored is reflective of the fact no one better has come along to put him out of the team but that's no fault of his.

Some real myths about Charlton. He played against plenty of shit too.

Nor agsjnst Andorra agsjnst whom Rooney scored a brace or Kazakhstan agsjnst whom he helped himself to 3 goals what relevance does that have exactly? Does rooney choose who england play against now? Charlton played against the big boys that are luxembourg, the usa (this is the usa footy team in the 50s remember), peru, ecuador, northern ireland,FIFA select side.....do none of those games suddenly count either then? Really struggling to see what your point is to be honest...just looks like yet another sad "Ooh English player achieves something, best slag him off for it then" thread to me,the likes of which i expect to see 13 year olds starting rather than grown fucking men. as i said, if it pisses you off that much then don't watch him or the game and don't start fucking threads about it! If you do a bit of research you'll see the FACTS that charlton scored more goals in friendlies than rooney has, played against plenty of shit sides and no-one has even implied that rooney is as good a player in the first place. Some people in this country do my Nut in...moan like shit about how shit england are but when 1 player achieves something positive then say it's pointless and find any way possible to belittle it! Says much, much more about you than it does rooney (particularly when most of what you've said is just badly researched bullshit)

IMO Rooney is one of the very few shining lights in the England squad. A bit like Beckham in that he often carries the rest of the team throughout games where others fear to tread.

As to which goal scoring record is better - who really cares. I'd as soon debate their respective barnets.

The big question is would Rooney make anyone's all time England Xi? He's flopped at every tournament he's been too and he has faced a lot of sides who would struggle in league two at international level.
He shouldn't have played last night given his woeful club form.

At that time you didn't get to play such small teams against whom you could score for fun !! Also was charlton taking penalties as Rooney is for England ? Fair play to Rooney, he is an elite group. When comparing stats to say who was maybe the best, I would not take level of competition into account, England have played poor teams as long as I can remember. What I would consider more valid is that Charlton played virtually all of his matches from a midfield role, not as a forward, which takes some doing. You also need to consider Jimmy Greaves, not in number of goals scored but in goals to number of appearances, 44 in 57 appearances, 13 in 12 under 23 matches and 357 league Goals, which is still a record I think. I very much doubt anyone will match Jimmy in the modern game.

I don't think anyone would necessarily put Rooney on the same level as the likes of Charlton and Greaves, but his scoring achievement should be celebrated, not belittled.
