Not many were on Charlton's level. World class. He's probably the most respected England player ever outside the UK by other countries. Beckenbauer's job in Mexico 1970 was to stop Charlton playing. When Ramsay pulled him off, the game totally turned round. England without Charlton and Banks were sunk.

Let's cut to the chase here
If Bobby Charlton was a modern day footballer for Manchester United and England you lot on here would despise him
He was indeed a superb player ( as is Rooney ) but let's be honest eh

I don't despise Rooney, IMHO he's a great story. I despair of the modern hatred culture. It's sad. No appreciation of anybody. In my lifetime one of the most exemplary footballers has been Gary Lineker. One sideways glance on MOTD and he gets dog's abuse. John Motson is in actual fact a lovable loony, an eccentric who clearly loves football. Imagine the stories he could talk of yet some people hate him. I dunno where it started or when it got worse but it's a shame.

I don't despise Rooney, only when he plays against us, Bobby Charlton though was simply an outstanding world class footballer, its no disgrace for Rooney if is isn't on his level

I think that was a few years ago now, when everyone was saying he needed to curtail his aggression. We'll he's curtailed it and its taken quite a lot away from his game.

When the commentator used to say "here comes Charlton", you could expect something special. Those old leather casey (sp?) were like medicine balls but when Bobby smacked one, it stayed smacked!
Now, if a commentator refers to Rooney, it's just not got the same aura or level of excitement. And that's not all Rooney's fault - Charlton played in an era or more workmanlike players. Which I confess to missing, as an old codger.

I'd take about half of Rooney's goals off anyway. With the ten a penny friendlies against the likes of fucking San Marino...

Unless he hit the ball and it bounced down onto the goal line, Joe. They didn't have the technology then you know to tell whether it had fully gone over or not.lol.

Yes, he was really good was Charlton. When he hit a ball, it stayed hit. When he scored he knew he'd scored. You are not wrong there he hit one over the crossbar into the scoreboard end at old trafford that hit me straight in the face knocked me out cold and broke my nose. We also lost 3-0. Besty and Storey-Moore took us apart. Note Mike Pejic's fine save just before half time (I didn't see it at the time as the St Johns were trying to bring me round) This is a match from an era when pitches were muddy, footballers were men, supporters were not glory hunters and not only could I pronounce all the players names I could spell most of them as well. They were all from our fair Isle. Happy days.

Rooney is ever so slightly over-hyped by the English media and always seems to play like the shackles of expection are weighing him dowm, rarely performs on the big stage.
Lineker was a far better out-and-out goalscorer and has a better strike rate than Rooney both for club and country. Those who saw him play will swear Greaves was the best striker to ever play for England too - also with a miles better strike rate.
Charlton was probably the best player to don an England shirt, not just a goalscorer, but play maker too and let us not forget that he was predominantly a midfield player.
No doubt Rooney could have been an all time great had he reached his full potential, but for me that has not happened. Could be compared to Shearer, Cole, Owen maybe(All probably have better strike rates than him for club and country) but Charlton?

I'm sorry mate but Shearer was England's last great goal scorer, Owen could have made it, the rest are just pretty average from our era. Rooney is a strange one, he's either epic or tepid, I suppose it depends on how fit he is and how good his support players are

Bobby Charlton is the greatest English player ever. You should read Henderson's biography on "The Wizard of Dribble"; there is only one player who in his prime with Blackpool put 10,000 extra spectators on the gate when he played. That was our Stan. In both the Charltons' biographies, they write about going to St James' to watch their cousin Jackie Milburn and being in awe of the amazing Matthews. Bobby does say in his biographies, that the best player he played against was Pele, and the best English player was Tom Finney.

What s ridiculous comparison to say Rooney scored as much as charlton
Charlton never played agsjnst the likes of San marino and similar minnows!!
At that time you didn't get to play such small teams against whom you could score for fun !!
Also was charlton taking penalties as Rooney is for England ?

Think it's a myth to suggest Charlton's England never played anyone rubbish.
He's scored more competitive goals than Charlton or Lineker.
