Disappointing to lose Buttler at the end, but what a recovery, I think with them having chosen to bowl, we'll be the happier of the two camps.

Missed most of today's play - but looks like it's been a cracker.
Shame to lose Butler at the end - he looks superb. Moeen a bit hit and miss but he hits a cover drive as sweet as Gower used to. Have to watch the highlights to see how Stokes and Root played but I think I'm going to be entertained.
Fantastic opening day for the test summer.

Cracking recovery. We've gone from strength up top and a dodgy middle order to then opposite way round. It's actually a very balanced batting line up that just hope the bowlers are on song. I'm hoping my £10 bet ona NZ 2-0 series win is well and truly lost after another good day tomorrow come on England.....

Broad out ....he just doesn't get behind the line of the ball these days , a definate movement of his back foot to the leg side . I wish that Botham would stop using my script

I wish that Botham would stop using my script I imagine they spend time with him in the nets working on his technique (I hope so anyway) which means he problem is in his head. Got the batting yips. I'd put him at #11. Because Jimmyis abetter prospectthhese days. Anyway - we're all out for just shy of 389. An OKish total. We'll see how good over the next 2 1/2 sessions. I've an afternoon of work today so I'll settle down for some cricket watching later. Bliss.

Wood wicket no ball. Why do bowlers get so close to the line, 1 inch further back ain't going to make that much difference Shirley?

Wood getting some pace here. Regularly hitting 90mph+ and off a pretty short run up too.

That Williamson chap looks a class act. So much time.
Looks set for a very big score.

We're also entering Captain Cook bashing time courtesy of Warne and Botham on Sky - with some justification it must be said. Their beef (no pun intended) is Cook lets the game drift when opposing batsmen get on top.
Of course anything can happen but at 267-2 on a flat pitch with some quality batting at the wicket and more to come a score well over 500 looks on. That'd make the start of our second innings quite interesting.

Stumps 303-2.
New Zealand's day. Big respect to them.
Tomorrow could be pivotal. If New Zealand are still batting into the evening session we will be getting into serious trouble.

Our bowling attack looks impotent again as it did in the Windies. When the balls not swinging Anderson is relatively easy to play, Broad, Wood and Stokes all bowled at decent pace but there's no surprises for the batsmen and Moeen offered little. Could be a long day tomorrow.....

What a horror of a day!
Kiwis playing some great stuff though it has to be said, probably the best all round team they've ever had.
