Squad is out:
Alastair Cook (Essex, capt), Adam Lyth, Gary Ballance (both Yorskhire), Ian Bell (Warwickshire), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), Ben Stokes (Durham), Jos Buttler (Lancashire, wk), Chris Jordan (Sussex), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), James Anderson (Lancashire), Mark Wood (Durham).
Baptism of fire for Lyth, Trent Boult and Southee in swinging conditions. Would love to see Wood given the nod ahead of Jordan for this one, see what he has.

I'd be amazed if makes the final 11 though. England seem to have set out their stall for a 4 man pace attack of Anderson, Broad, Stokes and Jordan with Ali as the spinner. Time will tell if this works but the evidence says so far it is still a work in progress. The problem is with Broad still struggling to find consistent form, Jordan and Stokes performing as reasonable 4th bowlers and Ali simply not a front line spinner a lot depends on Anderson. The other interesting thing is where they bat Butler. Has to be at 6 IMO. Let's wait and see. Looking forward to the series - could be a good one. We should have to play well to win,

We should have to play well to win, No surprises at all .....the make up of the attack is a concern as we've touched on for about a year now .....the loss of Swann continues to show how debilitating it has been to England ...he took so much pressure of the seam attack , more than any English spinner I can remember, of course Anderson is marvelous at what he does , but Swann was the match winner I fear that we won't ever replace him....still that's an old point I make , let's hope for a good performance free from KP hype and a win for England.

...let's hope for a good performance free from KP hype and a win for New Zealand. Think you have a good chance. Your main bowlers are well suited to English conditions and you've got batsmen that can score big runs. You also play positively. Against you is a side with questions about its bowling, batting and leadership. I'd have you down as favourites. Just. The only thing is how is your bottle? Guess we'll see.

Can't argue with that assessment . Of course all is forgiven if he picks up a five for on Thursday. Yes - I know. Fickle...

Am I alone in thinking there is something wrong (very wrong actually) in England players referring to the new ECB director of cricket by his nickname. This from "Cookie" in his pre test interview yesterday; Have a word Mr Strauss. What goes on the pitch, stays on the pitch. And you are no longer on the pitch. In other interview news, a wonderful one from our opponents captain explaining how they've turned around New Zealand's fortunes after that dreadful series in South Africa two years ago which included that humiliating dismissal in the first innings of the first test for 45 runs! NZ are a stern test for us. Great preparation for the Ashes. Looking forward to a good series starting this morning. Bit of a shame it's just two tests.

Indeed a shame that there's only 2 tests and if I remember correctly you guys did rather well in the Ashes last time you has a series against NZ before it

Wood or Jordan?
Hope they give Wood a chance, but we'd miss Jordan's fielding.
Suspect given the conservative nature of how the team is run, it'll be Jordan.

I agree, it all sounds too 'pally' & you already get the feeling that nothing is going to change. NZ are a stern test for us. A stern test... I'm expecting them to wipe the fucking floor with us!

NZ win the toss and have a bowl.
If we bat out the day I'll be very surprised!
Glad to see Lyth finally get his chance, he should be going in to this test with 3 caps already not frigging none!
