It'd be a surprise, but he's a strange player to invent stuff about to fill an inch on Page 58. 31 next month, which isn't really old. Slightly surprising that he's closing in on the last 6 months of his deal - and with Cameron and Sidwell contracted until 2016 and now viewed primarily in that role, who knows? Whelan (2015) Odemwingie (2015) Crouch (2015) Walters (2015)*although he mentions he's got 2 years left last summer so he may have signed a cheeky extension? Wilkinson (2015) Sorensen (2015) Palacios (2015) Edu (2015)
--------------------
Begovic (2016) N'Zonzi (2016) Wilson (2016) Cameron (2016) Huth (2016) Sidwell (2016) Adam (2016) Ness (2016)
--------------------
Muniesa (2017) Pieters (2017) Butland (2017) Arnautovic (2017) Bardsley (2017) Ireland (2017) Teixeira (2017) Shea (2017)
-------------------- Shawcross (2018) Bojan (2018) Diouf (2018)
Whelan has an option to extend the contract by a year till 2016 so i suspect the club will have an option as well www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2085348/Glenn-Whelan-signs-new-Stoke-deal.html

Sky sources: Talks between #scfc and Glenn Whelan have stalled. Whelan's contract is up at end of season-wants longer deal than is on offer.

As posted elsewhere, I had hoped to see Whelan finish his career with us or at least go very close to doing so.
Hopefully it can be resolved because for me, we can't have enough "Whelan types" around our club. He's been a great signing, a super servant, an important cog in everything good we have done as a club and is massively underrated by far too many Stoke supporters.
I'd be sad to see Whelan leave, particularly if he doesn't really want to.

I think we'd be offering 2 years, he wants more. I wouldn't offer him more than 2.

He's 30 so this will be his last big contract. Not surprising he's wanting to hold out for the best deal he can.

Yeah, I don't think anyone could argue with a two year deal but I understand why he'd want more at his age. It's a tricky one that's for sure. Glenn's whole game revolves around him getting about the pitch. Is he going to be able to keep that up at 34 and 34?

Some people talk about these old players like they were the faithful retainer or farm hand who deserve a roof over their head after years of service - they're millionaires every single one of them and in their book loyalty is a one way street heading in their direction.

It's more about the clear change in direction from the board for me. The rug appears to be being pulled up from all four corners of the room. Is the manager on board?

If he wants 3+ years, I'd tell him to get knotted too.

I don't blame him having a go for three for his last payday. But can't see anyone offering him that in the Prem
I can't see him having the legs to play a Whelan-esque game in that third season, so if we are saying two is our ceiling, I don't blame us if we stick to our guns when you're talking about probably £1.5m-a-season.

I think we'd be offering 2 years, he wants more. I wouldn't offer him more than 2. I think 2 with an option for another year if he plays an x amount of games in the second would be fair enough, I can't see him getting too many games when he's 33, also by then we'd probably have a replacement in, so the club would be pretty safe and it might keep Whelan happy.

I'd give him a 2 year contract with an option for a 3rd year if he plays so many games, say 20 games triggers it

He'll take 2 years.
He won't do any better than where he's at.

Whelan's been a really good player for us but he is slowing down and starting to pick up more injuries. A 2 year deal would seem to be generous to me.
Where else in the Prem (or anywhere else for that matter) would he get a better deal?

You can hardly blame him for wanting a longer contract.
A 2 year contract with a view to a third years, after X amount of appearances would hopefully be a happy medium.

If Diouf is worth the alleged 65k a week he is on then Glenn is easily worth a few years at a bit above his current salary.
That's nothing against Diouf btw.

He's not as good as he was and he's only going to get worse so we must be offering a lower wage surely?

Id let him, palacios and adam go. Especially if we have the chance to get Dembele in.
The squad for me post january/end of season should be:
GK Begovic Butland Youth Keeper (or offer tommy a year as 3rd string?)
RB Bardsley
CB Shawcross Huth Wilson Muniesa Tex (New CB)
LB Pieters Muniesa
LW Arnie Bakkalai
CDM Dembele Nzonzi Sidwell Cameron
CAM Bojan Ireland Shenton
RW Campbell Walters
Striker Diouf (New Striker)
That for me could be a very good squad, and would have room for a few loans too. Maybe a winger on loan
Out Whelan Palacios Adam Shea Odemwingie Ness Shotton Wilkinson Edu

I wouldn't say he's not as good as he was but same as yourself has just posted I also said a few days ago that I'd imagine he'll be offered a new contract on reduced terms due to the fact he's getting no younger.

He'll take 2 years. He won't do any better than where he's at. This ^ We've waited years for the performances we got last season. He had his moments but too nconsistent before that Happy to give him two years but he knows he will struggle to get a prem team at 33 so wants the longer deal. He would struggle to get 4 years at any established prem team at his age. Take the two years glen and prove you deserve another contract after that
