Said in that encylopidia of football The Sun today that Stoke are letting Whelan's contract run out this summer and could even let him go on the cheap in january.
I find that surprising

It's the Sun, their stories are about as plausible as Oscar Pistorius'.

He's still got plenty in the tank injuries permitted that is. Would be a great loss and expensive to replace him. Can't see us getting another £500k bargain like him.

One of our best players last season, and since the first season in the premier league. But there have been signs that this might be the case. When Hughes took over he favored Wilson and palacios to Whelan. We tried to bring in catermole, who at the price we were reportedly paying would have been an odd signing to be on the bench. We brought in sidwell in summer, perhaps as cover, but added another cm which we didn't really need unless we sold one. Hughes has tried Adam in further back in the midfield three, and Charlie wants more game time, once sidwell comes back you'd imagine we wouldn't keep three center midfield players on the bench. Whelan is back from injury and he's no longer starting, maybe because of fitness, but maybe not.
That being said, I doubt we would sell him in January unless a bid in the millions comes in. Wouldn't be worth losing a proven member of the squad for less.

It'd be a surprise, but he's a strange player to invent stuff about to fill an inch on Page 58. 31 next month, which isn't really old. Slightly surprising that he's closing in on the last 6 months of his deal - and with Cameron and Sidwell contracted until 2016 and now viewed primarily in that role, who knows? Whelan (2015) Odemwingie (2015) Crouch (2015) Walters (2015)*although he mentions he's got 2 years left last summer so he may have signed a cheeky extension? Wilkinson (2015) Sorensen (2015) Palacios (2015) Edu (2015)
--------------------
Begovic (2016) N'Zonzi (2016) Wilson (2016) Cameron (2016) Huth (2016) Sidwell (2016) Adam (2016) Ness (2016)
--------------------
Muniesa (2017) Pieters (2017) Butland (2017) Arnautovic (2017) Bardsley (2017) Ireland (2017) Teixeira (2017) Shea (2017)
-------------------- Shawcross (2018) Bojan (2018) Diouf (2018)

We'd better get Edu and Palacios tied into long deals pretty pronto else we could lose them to the vultures

Probably about to offer him a new contract on reduced terms. Why reduced, he deserves to stay on what he already has.

Just like Jon Walters, Whelan is part of the DNA of our Club. I'm quite certain that Hughes is aware of the importance of keeping Glenn Whelan for a few more years.

Getting no younger and with just a few months on his contract I doubt he'll be offered terms matching what he's currently earning, and besides I just can't see there been a queue of clubs lining up to sign him.

I think it is linked with that african player (Ghana I think?) who currently players in Italy (Udinese I think?)
Hes a DM and top of Hughes list of wannabes. Presumably if he comes in then one should go out.
Personally think we should get rid of other deadwood before moving Whelan on. Hes also a great senior squad member and leader. Im sure he would do wonders as a future part of the coaching team

We ought to have better, sorry. Exactly. Whelan's done ok recently but that is his limit. As for DNA, he is riddled with TP's genes rather than SCFC's - a lot of fans are still struggling to come to terms with the fact that the Stoke way is no longer the Pulis way.

If you can't see what Pulis brought to the club in terms of attitude and application, you must be struggling with severe bad eyesight, mate Whelan more or less personyfies that to me. Gel those qualities together with what Mark Hughes brings, and we'll have a very good cocktail.

Nothing wrong with my eyes, and I never criticised what Pulis did - I am merely pointing out that we have moved on and therefore Whelan does not represent the DNA of SCFC anymore. If Hughes values him, he will keep him and I am fine with that (although I personally think we need better).

Bar the odd one, anyone can go for me as long as they are replaced with someone better or at least as good. That's when the problems will start.
