StokeLoudProud Update on Whelan's contract, we are miles apart what his agent wants. #Stoke #SCFC His agent wants one last hurrah payment surely? Glenn wants a two year, I'm guessing club want a one year with possible extension... not surprised really.

Whelan has done well under Hughes but I trust him to find a suitable replacement in the summer if needed. Not concerned by this at all.

We never used to do our business in public like this. Times must really be hard at Etruria Towers.

James Nursey @jamesnursey 43 minutes ago Pulis wants a new winger on either flank for #WBA , a holding midfielder & a targetman to give side pace and power, feels squad v unbalanced

We should be giving him the two years, he deserves it and its not like its a massive contract length.

Suppose it depends what he's asking for, but I'm surprised there's no compromise available for a good player who's been here for 7 years. He's still the best we've got in that role.

How far apart is far apart?
Are we talking length? Wage? Bonus? Agent fee? All of the above?

I love, when it suites, people believe what agents say/leak. Who knows what he's actually asking for.

With him in his last 6 months of his deal we may have to settle for about £1.5m if we want to get anything for him? If lucky £500K tops. Based on the logic commonly used on this forum, if Pulis paid 8m for Palacios then surely he'll pay 16m for Whelan.

I'd rather keep him then let him go for nothing when his contract expires.... if he doesn't agree to a 1 year extension. Selling for that amount and then bringing in a more costly replacement (fee and possibly wages) doesn't make sense. Might be best to just wait it out and then get a new player in if and when his contract runs out.

Ive had plenty of bad things to say about whelan in the past, but after watching sidwell and adam try and do his job, we would have to pay a big fee to replace him, by the way that doesnt make me his number one fan mutts

With pulis supposedly havin 20 odd mil off the sale of Berahino burning a whole in his track suit pocket, it's likely he'd pay about 10 for owd glen.

Unless we are offered a reasonable fee in January we may as well hang onto him and let the contract expire if he doesn't sign a new one and look for a replacement over the summer.

The seven points and one goal conceded over Christmas just shows how important Whelan is to the side, unless we can find somebody affordable who is better, we have to keep him.
Sidwell may be a better all round player, but Whelan does a specific role for the team that nobody else can do as well as he does.
Maybe it's time for Hughes to try and tempt Dembele away from Spurs.

Even if we got a ludicrous amount for him there is no evidence that we would go out and spend a decent mount of money on an upgrade at all. It will be another cheap player with a decent if chequered past whose level of risk will be reflected in their piss pot price.

You've got to hope we'd be willing to offer him 2 years. So presuming we are it does look like Glen's being a tad greedy. Good luck to him with whatever he gets from whoever.
If we aren't willing to give him 2 years that's very shite from us.

It'd be odd if we were willing to offer Crouch a 2-yr deal, but not Whelan? Always though this idea was bonkers at Arsenal. And it looks the same here Irish Herald from last monthThe midfielder is out of contract at Stoke at the end of this season but talks on a new contract have failed to progress.
According to their club policy, Stoke will not offer new contracts longer than 12 months to players who are over 30, but Whelan - along with fellow thirty-something Peter Crouch - is not keen on just a one-year deal and is seeking a longer contract.

Is it policy or a journo making stuff up? Other than Tommy have we given any 30+ year old contracts recently? And his one year deals make sense, just offering Whelan that doesn't.

Funny because that's Chelsea's policy.
