There is still some slight doubt about that with Martin O’Neill suggesting yesterday that the Everton midfielder, who didn’t train yesterday, would be monitored closely over the coming days.
The same is true of Glenn Whelan, although the Stoke City midfielder did take part in yesterday’s session.
His lack of competitive action now looks to be a bigger barrier to his participation than the injury itself, which an association official described as a chipped bone rather than a fracture, the term Stoke City manager Mark Hughes used after the Germany game.
“Stoke are happy in terms of the injury [to Whelan]. It’s just what he’s capable of doing now and it would be more, I think, fitness . . . remember he has hardly done a thing since the game against Germany.
“But Glenn has had a really strong training session with Stoke and that was good, he’s followed that up [here] and we’ll play it very much day by day.”
“He has done a little bit here today, he did an extensive workout yesterday at Stoke and following on today so he doesn’t feel so bad.
“It’s really day by day, he hasn’t done much since the Germany game. I’ve got reservations of course; we’ll have to look at it again.
“Let’s see how things develop over the next couple of days, this is only Tuesday and we’ve got a few days still to negotiate. Glenn had a very good session yesterday with Stoke and he’s followed it up with something today, but it’s too early to say yet.”

Pieters strikes me as being hard too. A bit brittle at time but hard and mental as fook.

Can't see him messing with the team that won at Spurs. It'd be very harsh on Sidwell.

I love Whelan as you know WD and he is quite possibly one of the best signings in our history given what he's been a pivotal part of But he now has to earn his place back as it's been seized upon by Sidwell Gone are the days when certain players just strolled back onto the team sheet after injury or suspension

I wasn't criticising Whelan; just praising Sidwell. Healthy competition.

Not the type who talk tough then go missing when its time for action. Love the fact that Hughes seems to like a genuinely physical player, given the way he played it's probably no surprise.
