Cameron or Sidwell to step in if he's out for a while? You'd imagine it would be Sidwell with Cameron getting a game in the cup.

Cameron or Sidwell to step in if he's out for a while? Or Muniesa?

Injuries are gonna do us this season

Injuries are gonna do us this season I agree. Whelen has been immense for us in our games once we'd got the first couple over, and he will be missed if his injury is serious. Losing Odemwinge long-term has blunted our attacking options, and injuries to Moses and Diouf haven't helped at all. OS.

If Whelan is out longer term we are in big trouble.
He's been in that midfield on his own all season from a defensive point of view, which in my mind has been really solid in restricting chances. We've struggled to keep clean sheets with what little we've been giving away so bringing in a replacement that might upset that balance could be really difficult to manage.
We simply need to start cutting out mistakes in that back four and start taking our chances up front.

Injuries haven't been a big problem for us since we got promoted but this season, when on paper our squad was looking pretty strong, we've really suffered. Ultimately, could prove very costly.

Bloody hell, that's bad news if he's out for a while.
Sidwell is the obvious choice and it's a chance to establish himself in the starting XI, but I always think of him as a more attacking midfielder
Cameron - is he fit and has he got the discipline to play the defensive midfield role, which we need now more than ever.
Muniesa could have the attributes, but I'd feel uneasy playing him there when we need to start picking points up.
Apart from that, I'm not sure! Hopefully the injury isn't as bad as first feared and he'll be ok. We need him to be.
IF Whelan, Diouf and Moses are out, I think I'd go with this team for Sunday:
Begovic Bardsley Huth Shawcross Pieters Nzonzi Sidwell Adam Arnie Assaidi Crouch

Step forward, one Mr W. Palacios.

I've always regarded Sidwell as a box to box player - more comparable to NZonzi than Whelan.
Cameron played in the Whelan position in the USA's last game in the World Cup. He did well there until a fresh Lukaku mugged him in the last 10 minutes or so, but Geoff wasn't the only US player who was knackered by then. In his two (?) games in centre mid under Pulis he did fine as I recall and one at least was against Arsenal.
Muniesa looks as if he should be able to play in the Whelan role - but I don't know if he ever has done in the past at Barca.

I wouldn't even consider Sidwell right now, not the same player. I would give it Cameron or even half consider a Palacios return.

I thought that too Lakeland - but considering there isn't an obvious replacement, it might be we're forced to put Sidwell in the team?
Muniesa does have the attributes, and it's something I'd like to see - but not sure it's the time to do it?
Hopefully Whelan will be fit...fingers crossed!

He'll go with Sidwell. He's the only one you could trust to be disciplined enough to hold that roll.

If we don't even trust Sidwell as cover for Whelan then we would not have buttered him up and generously feathered his pocket to come here in the first place. It is a 'no-brainer' as they say state side

A huge blow, Whelan is a massive player for us and it will show. I don't trust anyone apart from Whelan in midfield.

If you'd told me two years ago during Pulis's last season that under a new, more expansive, manager that Whelan would be nigh on irreplaceable and this was a pretty massive blow I'd have laughed in your face but he is and it is.

be a bit braver at home, drop adam deeper which frees up a spot for ireland or bojan i think asking any former graduate of the "Paul Scholes school of tackling" to play a deeper midfield role would be footballing suicide myself. if we're not going to play Sidwell then you have to question why we even bought him in the first place. why tinker with things (i.e. trialling Cameron or Muniesa or Adam there) when we have a ready made replacement? yes, Sidwell would rather be box to box i'm sure but as has been said, he definitely has the discipline and experience to drop back and stick to his job. much rather that than just sling someone unaccustomed to the role in just to see how they do. we don't have the luxury of enough points or convincing enough performances as yet to start just giving things a whirl and see if they pay off.

That's what I said. If we don't play Sidwell in these circumstances then I fancy the 'transfer team' will be hauled in to Mr. Coates headmasters study to explain themselves. "Why am I stumping up the thick end of £40,000 each week for this bloke?"

Seen a few people saying we should bring in Palacios to replace Whelan. Must admit, don't think I'd be in favour of that!
