I didn't watch the game last night, choosing instead to record it and watch it with my boy this morning.
Cahill and Jagielka were fucking marvellous weren't they? Jagielka turned his back on the first and Cahill looked so assured, strong and domineering at that back post again...NOT.
England played OK I thought, certainly for an hour so, but defensively we were all over the place.
Woy and his defensive picks, including Baines, will bite England on the arse for as long as they are involved in the competition.

The off-the-line clearing header was rather impressive though

Jones & smalling as back up, fills me with dread. Uruguay will try & kick Rooney off the park Thursday just to wind him up. But he should play up top & sturridge played on the left. Other than the assist, Rooney looked lost last night & got dragged in far too deep.
The games gone now so it's onwards & upwards to Thursday, 4points could get us through to the 2nd round?

I didn't think Jags was too bad as it goes. Compared to Baines, Cahill and Johnson he was positively outstanding..
Only Jags and Sterling, possibly Sturridge and maybe Barkley when he came on can take any credit from last night.

Rooney looks lost for 75% of games a season. Fuck him off. Sturridge got his goal and looked lively. I'd be loathe to dislodge him.

It's what happens when you select defenders primarily on the basis of things other than defensive capability. You can get away with it in the qualifiers and against the lesser teams. The big boys exploit the lack of defensive capability pretty much every time - and then people start scratching their heads going "but the defence looked so good against San Marino and Moldova".

Didn't help that they had zero protection from Captain marvel and his young apprentice.

Their second goal was pathetic by Cahill, he hadn't got a clue where Hart was positioning himself let alone where Ballotelli was and bizarrely swan dived towards the enormous void he'd created..
Cahill is the best we've got unfortunately but again he's been given the chances unlike you know who, personally I think you know who would have prevented their second goal last night.
Overall we deserved something from the game but either way I'm more interested in the Bosnia and Honduras games today as I feel proud that SCFC are being represented on a global stage.

Always makes me laugh that we bitch and complain that the England players dont give a fuck, yet people want other nations to do better than us. Before anyone says well hes a Stoke player, you support stoke, blah blah blah, i agree, it is nice to see a Stokie out there, but wanting a team to do better than England because they have 1 stoke player is basically saying you support the players ect over the team which is exactly what most people were saying you should never do last year when Pulis was putting everyone to sleep.

To be fair I don't think they were the problem, thought both were ok tbf.
Thought Johnson was going to get smashed after his recent games thought he did well. Baines was exposed to much.
Same old England problem we need a left winger

I wouldn't go to any effort to keep Rooney in the side. Why move Sturridge when he's playing well where he is? The problem is that while Rooney undoubtedly has quality, he'd not be my first choice in any position. He's a poor mans Jon Walters for England. And maybe there lies the answer, super sub Rooney? Hart Johnson Jones Jagielka Baines Gerrard Henderson Sterling Barkley Welbeck Sturridge Would be my choice, though I'm not thrilled with choosing Welbeck. Though he would perhaps offer Baines better support than Rooney did.

The system is the biggest problem imho. 4 players up top just seems too much for our players to work with, too much crowding.
Too add a Rooney fighting for his starting place back off the bench does seem strangely appealing

On reflection I thought it was pretty close to being a car crash for Hodgson:
- his preference for defenders who are better going forwards cost us - his lack of defensive cover means we have no options - playing holding midfielders who really aren't disciplined or good enough in the role meant that the defence was shown up - playing Rooney on the wing - where he just doesn't work, and playing Sterling through the middle (where his pace and trickery are somewhat negated) - was a masterstroke - not fixing the defensive cover on the left - when it was obvious early on - not bringing on Lambert and bringing on Wiltshire - who contributed nothing (but that's all he's done recently)
Really poor managerial performance from Hodgson.

Forgot about Lambert, Wilshere did nothing whatsoever.
Saving grace is Hodgson will be unemployed come the end of the month, Southampton got a manager yet?

To be fair , I think Cahill has greatly improved after a full season with Terry who should be there along with Cole who is so much better defensively than Baines .
I enjoyed the game could have gone either way , we need to get more out of players like Rooney and Gerrard in these games when they need to be at their very best . Pirlo has to have the best footballing brain in the world , total genius vision

Uncle Woy is a classic safe 'yes man' and the sooner he carts off the better. Brian Clough was by far the best manager England never had. Our current soft defence and midfield are a total joke and as a result totally shambolic. Pity the Bosnia game is on so late tonight, was looking forward to seeing a decent world class goalie between the sticks this weekend.

I had no expectations for this tourno but for 80 mins (we tired badly last 10) we passed the ball extremely well, and created far more with it than Italy did. Pissed off with woy for bringing Wiltshire on. The Italian keeper parried single shot we hit - and sterling was getting crosses in, but we had nobody in the 6 yard box for these moments. Lambert would have been a far better option as sub.
