Ince

Tom Ince's contribution as a regular forward this season has been 1 goal and 1 assist in almost 21 hrs of playing. Quite staggeringly poor and I hope the manager has his eye on finding someone better for the wide role.

I feel a touch more positive about surviving after last night. Clearly both Barnsley and Luton, who were absolutely shocking don't have anywhere near enough to stay up and they will surely finish below us. Not sue who else is worse than us though maybe Wigan. The upcoming games against Reading and Middlesboro will perhaps tell us more.

7 I really don't like the starting xi that he is putting out and last night was the same. I don't think the changes made any difference to the performance. And against better teams the likes of Lyndsey and Cousins and one up front will be exposed for what they are and what we have already seen from them under Jones. It was a crucial win but Luton were absolutely abysmal by some distance the worst team we have played this season. If he can get results with the same team in tough fixtures against Sheff Wed and Fulham I will be impressed

How far we have fallen... So fucking depressing. Wake me up when this nightmare ends. Change your name to Rip Van Winkle buddy...20 years asleep which is probably the length of time we will be slumming around champ/Div1

The manager has been preaching continuity and a settled side. I am baffled as to what he saw with this starting xi last week that convinces him to stick with it.

Didn't see that one coming. It will be fascinating to see how he gets on. Bit of a left field appointment for them as usually they go foreign. Maybe they have one eye on next season in the Championship A few on here were calling for Pearson. IMHO I think he will be a bit of a disaster....we shall see

I am watching this on Amazon. Really disappointing that they have the same commentators and the same pundits that Sky BT Itv Bbc etc use. Is there some pundits union that's a closed shop? I was hoping for something a bit different from moneybags Amazon 😣

This discussion has been going on for years, today is the first time we're actually seeing the start of it. When Amazon, or any of the internet giants, decide they want to really pursue the Premier League Sky won't stand a chance and everyone's viewing habits will have to change. It’s the way it’s going anyway mate. Internet tv. Also, bardsley and pieters start for burnley. What the fuck went wrong at Stoke 😆 What's the problem we have a CB at right back who can't cross and a pensioner at left back. Great process😥

3 merely for at least going going gung ho with the subs But the starting xi was just about the poorest we've seen since relegation. Two dreadful full backs little no physicality or creativity in midfield. And a simply awful front 3 for a 4-3-3 line up. Another manager who seemingly has to learn from his mistakes quickly

That's a great article eruditely put together and completely on the money. The conclusion is that even though the board have the best intentions of the club they lack the ability to put together a coherent long term strategy putting huge dependence on the manager to steer the club forward. I think this is the wrong approach. There has long been needed an outside influence of a seriously experienced football man at board level to balance the views of supporter/owners who have the best intentions but not the vision. Family owned and run businesses rarely allow in outsiders at the very top which often limits the potential. Such is SCFC.

bizarre decision by a usually savvy Levy. Mourinho lost the plot at Chelsea was a near disaster at Manu and seems to be in decline as a manager. The football will be dull and attritional and Spurs fans will soon turn against him. His Interviews are no longer fun and are now just boorish. It's another reason to give watching the premier league circus a swerve.

Long-time NI fan here. Interesting debate on this thread about St. Michael double-jobbing. I can certainly see why any Stoke fan (and owner!) would want him 100% concentrating on the job. But you have to look at it from MON's pov. He has always enjoyed an excellent relationship with the IFA, not least for giving an inexperienced manager the job in the first place, and then for sticking with him when early results were dreadful (though NOT performances, it should be said). Then when he started to be in demand, the IFA didn't try to impede him, by blocking approaches, or demanding silly compensation etc. So that after he was offered the Scotland job - and declined - they agreed a new package for him, which doubled his previous salary, but also required him to take up a Director's role i.e. assuming extra responsibility for developing the game in NI overall, not just managing the Senior team. And this wasn't just some fake Rooney/Derby/"Coach" job to justify the salary increase, it was a proper role which he took seriously. So the IFA having done right by him, he will have wanted to do right by them - he's got a great deal more integrity than your average "here-today-gone-tomorrow" football manager. (He will also have had a loyalty to his players and the fans, to leave in the proper way). As for the two games next week, I doubt he thought he would be in place to take the team at Barnsley, so expected his official start date to be last week of November. But if he/IFA/Stoke C all sorted it out quickly, then he came in early. The play-offs are different. My guess is that he and the IFA expect his replacement to be in post in time for those - he will almost certainly have been consulted by the IFA as to whom it might be (my bet is Robinson from Motherwell). But there may be a Gentleman's Agreement that if the IFA can't get their man by then, Michael has got the nod from Stoke to step in again, possibly dependent on your results/position in the meantime. And a handshake from Michael is better than money in the bank! One other minor factor. When Lawrie Sanchez was our manager, he made a great early start to our Euro2008 qualifying campaign when we was approached by Fayed to manage Fulham, then struggling in the Prem. Sanchez insisted he could see out the remaining few qualifiers whilst managing Fulham, but the Phoney Pharoah refused point blank. Tbf to Sanch, he didn't really have any bargaining power (nor the IFA), unlike Michael, who is reported eg to have declined recent interest from clubs like Boro and WBA. Anyhow, NI's campaign bombed afterwards, leaving a lot of bad feeling all round. This will not have been a deciding issue for Michael, but I daresay he'll have wanted to avoid something similar. More generally, no-one can guarantee how any appointment will ever turn out, but after 8 years of following him closely, I can see no reason whatever why Michael won't turn out to be a huge success at Stoke, not least because he will have interviewed Stoke for the job as much as the other way round! And if he reckons he can get a tune out of Stoke, then he's probably right. Beyond that, there is not a single NI fan who isn't gutted that this day finally came, but neither does a single one wish him anything but the very best of luck. And as you will know, that is so rare in football as to be virtually unique! P.S. I am not Michael. Or his dad. Or his love-child. I was watching the England match in Belfast last night, I did let out to the barman after 4 pints I was a Stoke fan, was well received and they hope he does well, and may gain a few Stoke fans along the way (albeit it temporary from Liverpool Man Utd. etc.) working with a guy who regulary goes away with NI, to some of the far flung places as well, not just the bigger games. A couple of years ago when in Morrisons bar (Opposite the BBC) and a very large and drunk guy thought I was Lawrie Sanchez Made me laugh Chris have you got Ecuadorian ancestry?

The defence continues to be a worry both their goals were poor. I too would like Clucas at left back but we simply have to get goals from midfield if we are to continue with a front 3 of Ince Gregory and McClean, all 3 are a long way from natural goalscorers. Gregory is so frustrating, lots of great forward play but his composure in the box is awful, how many chances has he already missed this season? But he takes a decent pen! The midfield is a real conundrum for O'Neill when all are fit and he sticks with a midfield 3 especially because they have to deliver goals and because of that I would favour Clucas Allen and one other.

Wow his front 3 in a 4-3-3 is marginally worse than Rowetts!! We already know that Ince and McClean as part of a front 3 just doesn't cut it. Very odd

Hughes without a doubt.Just calamitous timing and not having a nailed on replacement left us with fucking Lambert! I never thought the board would repeat such lunacy. But the Jones sacking again without a replacement nailed on looks like repeating that nightmare managerial appointment

The sensible decision from Delap would be to exclude him completely from tonight's squad ensuring no pantomime. Then everyone can get on with doing whatever we can to win a game of footie without the distraction.

Hi, Wigan Season Ticket Holder here (in peace, btw 😉👍) You were pre-warned about Powell by many Wigan fans at the start of the season. The lad has a chronic hamstring condition (one is 20% shorter than the other),and needs to be looked after & properly man managed. Paul Cook did a brilliant job making sure he got as much out of him as he possibly could, without detrimentally damaging Powell's long term future. Nathan Jones needs to start adopting the same "softly softly" approach as Cook did. Yes, it is frustrating, especially knowing you have a Premier League Quality player in there, but that's the only way you're going to get anything out of him. Interesting post thanks. Powell has averaged 35 starts in his last 2 seasons at Wigan. Now at Stoke we cant get him out of the treatment room let alone on the pitch. Maybe instead of abusing the player, who everyone knew was injury prone but the signing was unanimously lauded, perhaps we should question another aspect of Jones and his 'wonderful' management team that isn't as good as he wants us to believe. It's a bit of a mystery in a few short months he can go from starting 30 odd games to being an invisible man.

Going forward with Jones the huge worry is that the next 2 windows will see Etebo Badou probably Allen gone to be replaced by players like Jordan Cousins and the other 10 or so disasters he has signed. It's just one of many reasons we need a new manager otherwise we will always be lower championship league team. I just hope for once the board have a decent option lined up.
