Supported his local team and we can't knock him for that. Apologies to Mr Sutcliffe if I have damaged his reputation in any way. Made me laugh that 🤣

With reference to terraced streets. Even if you put charging points in, will you be able to get close enough to charge your car? What about those who live in blocks of flats? What if you’re leaving your car for several hours in a field at say, an air show, how do these cars get charged up? What about farmers in fields miles from anything? What about the random building sites that pop up. You could go on with more examples of how impractical it is to recharge a EV’s batteries. JCB are going down the hydrogen route www.jcb.com/en-gb/campaigns/hydrogen/hydrogen-truckin

I think the EV is typical of the ‘good ideas club’ mentality that seems prevalent, ie implementing or trying to perfect bad or impractical ideas. You’d have thought communism or poll tax should have taught us a lesson or two about that. Hybrids are the best medium term solution, Submarines have used the same idea for over a century so it’s a proven concept. I think many of us are hoping bio fuels or hydrogen technologies will be the long term solution. To me EV’s are the 8 track cartridge or Betamax of the 21st century.

I was out axe throwing with a Millwall fan last night, he'd heard it was possibly happening and was mixed about it, he's had them in a decent position but the football wasn't great at times. He was non plussed when I was giving words about them kicking Vidigal off the pitch for two months. Love the first line of your post, would make a great first line of a rock song 😂

50 years ago today since we failed to qualify for West Germany. The final nail in the coffin of our being a major international force. The first nail was Leon. The penultimate was Katowice. "Gercha! When the Poles knocked England out the cup." When the kids are banging on his door, gercha! 🤣

I was at Newcastle Town v Stalybridge Celtic. I was attracted by the prospect of watching an away team who I'd actually heard of visiting the Lyme Valley Stadium! The game finished 3-4, but Castle were unlucky to lose. Ex Stokie and recent TV star Scott Wara scored a last minute winner. Stalybridge brought a noisy little band of followers with them, and there was plenty of needle during the game- players constantly at it and the managers offering each other on at one point. Newcastle look better than they have done for a few seasons. They might even manage a year of mid-table obscurity rather than the relegation scrambles they've been in for the last couple of years. I took my lad with me, who I tend to have to drag to Stoke matches to be honest. He loved it at Newcastle and wants to go again. Says something when Northern Premier League West Division games, the 8th tier of football, are more appealing than watching a Championship team. I’ve said before on this thread ground hopping is a joy and gets addictive. I’ll probably chuck in Stoke away’s next season to do more than I currently do. I strongly recommend a visit to Hednesford Town who are in the same league as ‘castle.

We have a cracking canal system that would benefit from some kind of commercial / entertainment hub sitting on it The proposed refilling of the Burslem branch of the Trent and Mersey has that potential.

I saw a rare sojourn north by Atomic Rooster at the Flowerpot in Derby. Rooster, of course, are missing the late Vincent Crane, but they are an excellent ‘continuation band’ with two original members. Rooster’s raw and improvisational studio sound lends itself to live performance and the current line up belt out the old rockers brilliantly. There’s just something wonderful to me about bands with a Hammond Organ/electric piano as a lead instrument. The venue itself is an old school room attached to the pub next door. It put me in mind of the Wheatsheaf, Talbot, Newcastle Arts Centre with its intimate and pillar obscuring atmosphere. Cost £1.50 to park around the corner and is a quick drive from the Potteries (naturally). A quick glance at their schedule makes it look similar in tone to the The Robin in Bilston. Rooster still have it and it’s worth taking a look at the Flowerpot too.

Oh no, sad news. The Isley’s were one of a number of great Soul acts in the 60s, who, when the 70s arrrived ‘Rocked up’ their sound and effectively became a different act. Wonderful, spine tingling vocals from the brothers. RIP.

I’ve read Michael Bilton’s book that this programme is partially informed by. It’s the best book on Sutcliffe by a considerable distance and threw new light on the subject and uncovered new evidence. Sutcliffe may well have attacked many, many more women and in one known instance a man. Going back to the programme, ITV have been mining this ‘real life drama’ seam for a while and it was starting to get boring and tedious. Not so, with ‘The Long Shadow’. Aside from it working brilliantly as a subtle, not sensationalist drama, is its attention to detail. The senior police detectives are in some cases close look a likes, and details like using a blue commer van as did one of the victims show the level of research. It’s also interesting to see the Police baffled because the murders are not committed by a friend, family member or acquaintance like most murders were (still are?). The police in the series have no sense of a sexual component in the murder sequence it’s just a ‘mission against prostitutes’ or ‘good time girls’. Exactly how it was. ‘The Long Shadow’ also portrays something that is little remembered, the sense that Sutcliffe was this unseen ‘ghost’ who moved and murdered with impunity and kept women off the streets after dark, and dominated talk in works canteens, the pub or wherever people gathered in the North. I’m glad too it portrays the human tragedy of this case, instead of some crass sensationalism. Great stuff.

Marty Hopkirk. Saw the very first episode of "Randall and Hopkirk deceased" a few months ago and he said he had to wait 100 years before returning to the grave. The programme went out in 1968, 55 years ago... Randall and Hopkirk was one of a number of ITC serials in the 1960s. Most of them a bit daft, but never not watchable and entertaining for it. They also looked expensively made in colour(!) with well known casts, and flash locations. A era where TV took a few risks. Compare and contrast with the BBC who had no answer to this kind of thing.

I was offered on by a bunch of munchkin Stoke fans who thought I was a Leicester fan. This despite getting on a Stoke coach. When I told them what to do in a broad potteries accent, and that I was a Stoke fan, I got a volley of abuse. Un-fucking-believable.

Leek have been drawn at AFC Fylde in the FA Cup 4th qualifying round. No Stoke game, so a banging ground hop and an intriguing tie. Well worth it this one.

Staff at the club told me this. That’s fantastic to know, a piece of the Vic living on. I moved down here a couple of years ago but haven’t ventured to a game or anything, I should go tbh to support the area. Excellent set up there and nice people.

This just seems to be a symbol of the moral disintegration of this country. Never can I remember a time where utterly pointless acts like this are committed for what? Expect more of this as this ‘child’ will not be punished in any way, shape or form.

The day the earth caught fire That's a great film Can't remember the gal in it but think she died quite young. One of my fave all time films, that and When Worlds Collide. I think she was an alcoholic as was her co-star Edward Judd. What luvvies did before cocaine. Great film.

We need to get outside the main entrance and let our feelings known. Eloquence social media posts are one thing and can be ignored. Belligerent action with real people that can be seen and heard by the hierarchy is something else. Mills Out!

I believe the aircraft was an Avro Anson. just had a look at a picture of that plane and it does look like the same one. Cheers for that. It was mentioned on a heritage aircraft facebook group I’m on, and identified on there. Apparently it fly’s from an airfield in North Shropshire.

I went Arbroath last Easter Saturday for a local Derby against Dundee. Worst game of football I’d seen for awhile but more than made up for by the stadium, location, sense of occasion etc. one of the classic ground hops without shadow of a doubt. Took my girlfriend who’s not into footie and she loved it too. Loved it so much, as Arnie said ‘I’ll be back’ 😁

I was at Hednesford v chasetown derby yesterday.went to the game at widnes on Saturday played at a soulless stadium the rugby team use aswel an we got a real battering so was expecting the worst against chasetown who had won 3 an drawn 1 so far but we put in a really improved performance an managed to get a point in a 1-1 draw.a fantastic crowd of 1486 there to go with the 700 and 600 so far at home this season and both the away games at Newcastle and widnes we have outnumbered the home fans so it's great to see the fans getting behind the club in our current situation. I really enjoyed visiting Hednesford for the first time last week against Kidsgrove. Excellent set up there and will definitely come back. Very nice to go through those turnstiles from the Victoria Ground.

Unemployment in some places was beginning to bite hard , especially up here , but FV was also at or approaching its peak .. hugely impacting on attendances .. as FV bit many family orientated supporters and indeed many fans in general turned their back on the game , meaning grounds were even more dangerous to visit resulting in a downward spiral effect on gates Grim times for those that stuck with the game and their clubs , especially if you went away regularly rather than just the one or two decent turnouts .. fans in general were hated and despised by just about everyone and everything admitting to being a football fan wasn’t always a wise move career wise Even the shit had many sub 40k gates , including some low 30s ..though not unless you speak to their genuine lot Historian Dominic Sandbrook thinks that the prosperity of the 1960s/70s had an effect on the low crowds. Older fans had money to do different things with their spare time, maybe even listen to their wife and indulge family life more. Once there was a working class hierarchy of males- Dads, Uncles, older brothers, at some point there was young white working class males making up a lot of support, well into the 1990s. The older guys had disappeared into their sheds or were taking the family out in their cortina’s.
