Jordan Thompson is the equivalent of having bolognese for tea.
It’s boring, wank and we’d all rather have something more exotic but it fills a hole and doesn’t cost a huge amount.

Bear in mind how much we got rinsed for Joe Allen, who did the same job, and has about the same level of ability. It's not all bad when you think about it like that.

We missed Burgers height to keep the ball in there half, but Thompson did alright. None of the players were that bad, poorest probably Bocat and Junho.

There is a good player in there somewhere with Thompson, he lets himself down with his negativity. Sideways & backwards passes all of the time.

Would much rather sidibe come on for the last 20 minutes than Thompson, especially if we are not actually winning.

The yellow was an obvious 'take one for the team' type, which I certainly wouldn't blame him for. He does his best and coaches pick him when they think there are no better options.

Im hoping he wont be playing much more for Stoke. Hes so awful to watch ruin any of our play with negative backwards passing. The inevitable yellow card just makes it worse. We have so many other players in midfield positions waiting to get a game - Sidibe, Seko, Lawal to come I just dont see anything that Thompson does well as a central defensive midfielder Yeah he’s that rubbish that various Northern Ireland managers have awarded him 61 international caps at various levels. Suppose now that Baker and Laurent have gone some ‘fans’ just need another Stoke player to hate.

Unlike Burger or even Pearson, the other two defensive midfielders we have who play there at the moment! Perhaps bookings come with the role?

Perhaps it's just that he does a better job than the others in that particular role?

He’s fine. He’s not amazing, he’s not terrible.
Typical, useful squad player.
In terms of our problems, he’s well down the list.
Top of the list is junior being unable to defend atm!

Oh I thought it was for dissent, misremembered. He sometimes does "professional" fouls but also dumb stuff. Burger's usually seem pointless.

Manhoef made the foul, which wasn't a foul, and Thompson stupidly pointed out what a cunt three referee was for buying it. The foul he made on the edge of their area was a good foul. Commentator was wrong and couldn't see the danger.

He kept going off on tangents about things that showed he clearly doesn’t have a great understanding of how football works. That foul by Thompson was important, even if it was on the edge of their box from our attack. Then he was going on about Johansson wasting time in the first half with an injury, where he’d clearly got something in his eye.

When I switched on the radio and based on the excited tone in his voice I thought certain we must be on the attack. But oh no, it’s Sohail getting overly excited by Swansea coming close.

He's a good egg, he's probably a great trainer and can be relied on to put in a shift, he can slot in down that left hand side or in the centre of the park and he's probably one of our lower earners. Is he really good enough to be a bona fide regular if we want to push on? Probably not. Is he good enough to play 10-15 games a season (rotation for 3 game weeks) and come on here and there to shore us up if we are struggling to get a foot on the ball or see out a 1-0 lead for the last 15-20 minutes? Id say so. It's probably the same sort of situation with Gooch too for my opinion.
What I don't get is the amount of criticism he gets - yes he's pretty limited, but we have had better technical players in the last few years (Clucas, Laurent, Baker after his first half season here) who have gone missing when we've been up against it - at least JT has a good attitude about him.

We were a little better second half and at least Thompson gets a foot in and stops the stroking the ball around with ease we seem to allow the opposition to do at will. We're better with him for me than without him , more often than not

Nothing against him personally, but couldn’t see him getting in any other championship side. Probably just does enough. But not good enough if we want to be top half of the table side.

There is a good player in there somewhere with Thompson, he lets himself down with his negativity. Sideways & backwards passes all of the time. I haven't seen us much this season but maybe that's his job? I'm sure Whelan was criticised for the same thing, yet often it's about passing to someone else in space to make the forward pass. Nzonzi would regularly do the same, though he also had the ability/strength to hold players off, dribble past them, or make a good pass himself. He was world class, and now we're in the Championship.

I was wrong. I'd assumed that the booking was a result of stopping the post corner potential breakaway. Thanks for the correction. I get irritated by bookings for 'chatbacks', though it's pretty human of course.

A home made Bolognese is a great meal, in my house at least. Thompson is more like a ready made lasagne from Aldi, you know it’s going to be terrible and most people wouldn’t eat it unless desperate, shouldn’t be on the menu for any respectable household. Not quite a Findus lasagne though, that delicacy is reserved for the likes of Palacios / Wimmer.

I don't think Thompson has the quality on the ball to be in our regular first 11, but when we are defending a lead I don't mind seeing him replacing someone else. He always puts a foot in and he takes no prisoners. I really like his attitude, but unfortunately I think he lacks too much quality going forward. He seems to low a backwards or sideways pass which slows us down a lot and makes us more predictable.

I certainly haven’t ended up eating my own words in this aspect.

As it stands, I think I'd prefer to give young Sidibe the chance to grow into the role rather than Thompson and Burger. Both are totally inconsistent, both are yellow card (or worse) waiting to happen, Burger, in particular, just doesn't have the stamina to play 90 minutes anyway and Thompson only has reverse gear working effectively. Lawal hopefully will be the solution we are all hoping for but, in the meantime, young Sol surely has to be the better option.
