You didn't see Spain's players singing their national anthem in the Euros and they won the damn thing! You’d have a job seeing them singing it it’s got no words! I think that was the gist of the comment

Personally I think the England National Anthem should be Land of Hope and Glory with God Save the King as UK Anthem.
Sadly God Save the King is nowhere near as inspiring as the Welsh or even the French Anthems.
Second choice but a long way behind would be Jerusalem

Half my family are Irish, and the relationship is a bit complicated, to say the least. There's a lot of mutual affection, but it's a bit thorny Carsley played for them for 10 yrs, and sounds like he had much more of an Irish Catholic upbringing than you'd expect of someone with only one Irish grandparent. You can't really tell someone what nationality they 'feel'. I get the impression Carsley respects both parts of his identity, but certainly doesn't want to damage his 10-yr international career with Ireland by putting some noses out of joint. Harry Kane's dad was born in Galway, but you could tell from his answers in the press conference yesterday, he doesn't feel remotely Irish. It's just such a personal thing. I haven't got a problem with anyone doing what they want in situations like this as long as they're respectful, and Carsley certainly has been. So it's a complete non-story. Actually, Harry Kane declared for Ireland and his family are Irish speakers so not entirely true. He has a strong connection with Galway and a regular visitor. I think he was playing it down a bit as he was close to not being eligible for England and visited Martin O'Neill at the Irish camp with his Dad when on loan at Norwich Bellingham, Grealish, Maddison, Maguire and Rice are all from Irish grandparents or parents. I doubt will count for anything although Bellingham did say he wanted to play for Ireland in his younger days and Jobe still may. You can't blame players for declaring for England in the current state of the Irish team, possibly the lowest ebb I've ever seen although some good youngsters coming along and of course far less chance of a Rice or Bellingham going to a major tournament with Ireland. I get Carsley's choice as an ex Ireland player in Dublin for those who know their history but it's not that important , really shouldn't have said anything if he actually did as will be turned into such a big deal in some quarters. Is there a direct quote from Carsley?

“This is something that I always struggled with when I was playing for Ireland,” Birmingham-born Carsley - who qualified to play for Ireland through his grandmother - said of anthems. “The gap between your warm-up, your coming on to the pitch and the delay with the anthems. So it’s something that I have never done. “I was always really focused on the game and my first actions of the game. I really found that in that period I was wary about my mind wandering off. “I was really focused on the football and I have taken that in to coaching. We had the national anthem with the Under-21s also and I am in a zone at that point. “I am thinking about how the opposition are going to set up and our first actions within the game. “I fully respect both anthems and understand how much they mean to both countries. It’s something I am really respectful of.”

We are all (well, most of us) taking it up the tailpipe everyday from corrupt politicians (irrespective of party) and people are up in arms over this rather than something that actually matters. The king has had a 50% pay rise. Doubt he gives a toss Carsley doesn’t sing… or about any of us for that matter.

Not one for anthems at sport and all this sobbing nonsense at the Olympics and no offence but the British anthem is pretty dull, Billy Connolly had a point. The Welsh and Scots have their own alternatives at football etc and are pretty good Italy and France are almost calls to arms as the Irish anthem Amhrán na bhFiann also. Didn't Rooney get pretty much forced to sing it? The press do love a story to destroy an England manager and then get all patriotic when they reach a final/semi etc . Didn't take them long with Carsley
No fan of rugby at all but have noticed they don't the Irish national anthem of late but Ireland's Call ...possibly down to the north being represented as well
No need for them at all for me .
Get on the pitch and play. We know who's playing

You didn't see Spain's players singing their national anthem in the Euros and they won the damn thing! That's very clever Dave. For posters who don't have Dave's knowledge, the Spanish national anthem has no official words. As for Carsley, I have no real opinion on whether he sings or not. I can see the arguments for both sides.

Why? Every days a school day. I've just learned Northern Ireland use Londonderry Air (the tune to Danny Boy) as their anthem at The Commonwealth Games (for eg) so why not v England?

Looks like we are still stuck in the Dark Ages. National pride and a belief in God is timeless. Doesn't mean people are stuck in the dark ages. God Save The King. You can believe and do what you want. You totally misrepresent and misunderstand my post. The Dark Ages bit is referring to the idea that folk should be coerced into participating into something that they don't believe in and the idea that you are somehow unpatriotic, or an heathen if they don't take part.
