It’s a horrendous anthem that says nothing of the achievements of ordinary people; instead focusing solely on the monarch, in a country where many people are either indifferent to feudalism or see it as an anachronism. Compare it to land of my fathers, which speaks of the beauty of wales and the culture/heritage; and it’s clear to me why our anthem inspires such controversy compared to theirs. I agree. We need to introduce a new anthem that the majority can get behind without any controversy. And I'm a bit of a traditionalist as well but can see why our anthem is pretty outdated.

The thought police who demand free speech etc are now up in arms because the free speech and thought isn’t going the way in which they want it too I wish they’d make their fuckin minds up Free speech is only good if they agree with you. Otherwise it's woke. Them's the rules.

Press are cranking this one up to try to generate some interest.
They are also going on Declan Rice and Jack Grealish having represented Ireland at all age levels except for full international before flipping to England.

Born English. Played for Ireland. Probably the Irish connection and not betraying his personal history. Either that or he’s got relatives in Liverpool.
It’s his choice to sing it or not but don’t come out with Bollocks like I’m focused on the match and don’t want to be distracted. If he is distracted by 90 seconds of singing and can’t refocus then he’s a fuckin halfwit.
It’s his Irish connection that won’t let him. FFS be honest.

They want a 'name' manager so want to turn people against him in case he turns out to be good at his job.

A bloke I used to work with lived next door to Lee Carsley when he was at Derby and he said you couldn’t wish to meet a nicer more down to earth bloke than him.Lovely fella who did loads for the Down Syndrome charities which is close to his heart. Singing the national anthem is an individual choice but there’s no doubt that when the players from that country all belt it out together(like the French,Welsh,Scots,Italians etc) it’s a great sight to see. Carsley obviously has his own reasons not to sing it but I personally don’t understand why a bloke born in Birmingham wouldn’t sing the National Anthem🤷♂️Yes he represented Ireland and his Grandma was from Cork but does that really stop you singing it? Anyway that’s his decision and in the grand scheme of this not a major issue

If we don't win tonight some will say it's because he didn't sing the anthem. And mean it.

Looks like we are still stuck in the Dark Ages. National pride and a belief in God is timeless. Doesn't mean people are stuck in the dark ages. God Save The King. National pride is not the same as belief in God and you don't have to a monarchist to be be proud of your country. The other problem with God Save the <gender appropriate name for the current unelected head of state> is it's the UK anthem. England needs its own anthem.

Good for him, its dreadful and probably the second worst national anthem in the world (well done to Australia who take the title).
The French, Italians and Americans are all buzzed up following theirs, whilst ours sends glass eyes to sleep.

I said that neither of them are examples of living in the dark age. I don't have time to research it at this moment, but I believe that it was our national anthem prior to the Uniting of the Kingdom and that it had a verse in about killing the Scottish originally. So it is our own. And will be for generations to come.

We’re a monarchy, and that’s reflected in our NATIONAL anthem. Not singing it because you don’t support our national anthems lyrics seems purile nonsense to me but then again I’m not anti monarchist so it would do in my eyes. Singing it should be more about showing your support for England than making it a point of protest.

Carso (©Joeinoz) seems like a decent sort who represented Ireland as a player and is just respectfully declining to sing it. No drama, no problem but the gutters have to stir it up again.
*Heard a snippet about Lee, that he can belt out a cracking karaoke version of She's a Rainbow by World of Twist. Now he can sing that instead supported by Members Of The Oatcake Messageboard. Great band

Half my family are Irish, and the relationship is a bit complicated, to say the least. There's a lot of mutual affection, but it's a bit thorny
Carsley played for them for 10 yrs, and sounds like he had much more of an Irish Catholic upbringing than you'd expect of someone with only one Irish grandparent.
You can't really tell someone what nationality they 'feel'. I get the impression Carsley respects both parts of his identity, but certainly doesn't want to damage his 10-yr international career with Ireland by putting some noses out of joint.
Harry Kane's dad was born in Galway, but you could tell from his answers in the press conference yesterday, he doesn't feel remotely Irish. It's just such a personal thing.
I haven't got a problem with anyone doing what they want in situations like this as long as they're respectful, and Carsley certainly has been. So it's a complete non-story.

Who cares if he does or doesn’t it’s a free country with supposedly free speech He’s said nothing detrimental to either Ireland or England Unlike a certain other Irish player who I can’t give the satisfaction of naming I personally would belt it out but that’s me But if the bloke next to me didn’t so be it Lazy journalism with nothing better to write It’s all a load of bollocks And as for the rice and Grealish shit who cares Are we going to boo musiala every time England 🏴 play against him Some people need to get a grip And a life
