They know they've got cash on the hip and are trying it on. I bet Brum are desperate enough to take it to 12-15M

To get Stansfield to play this season in league one, when he could play in the championship, Birmingham would have to offer a 3 or 4 year contract on substantial wage. As Sunderland and Shef Wed showed, promotion is not guaranteed. It's a huge gamble and could really be a terrible business decision that shows the desperation of their chairman and board to get back up. After all its their fault relegation happened and no mistake.

League One Birmingham City could be about to spend an eight-figure transfer fee... John Percy
Birmingham City are locked in talks with Fulham over a potential deal for striker Jay Stansfield.
League One club Birmingham are pushing hard to sign Stansfield and have already seen a £10 million bid rejected by the Premier League club.
There is understood to be a difference in valuations but Birmingham are determined to sign the forward, who scored 13 goals on loan last season.
If Stansfield joins Birmingham it would obliterate the current transfer record in League One of around £4 million paid by Sunderland for Will Grigg.

He’s not worth half of what they’ve already bid.
The fact they’re allowed to bid such an insane amount is just mind blowing.

Never like seeing players getting injured and facing time out in the stands but on this occasion, if he signs for them for a ridiculous fee I would smirk if he was crocked in an early game & had to sit out the rest of the season! Would serve the 'Scummy' club right for trying to buy their way out of the position their deluded owners got them in to!

Me neither but on this occasion I would happily make an exception for those bunch of twats.

Birmingham close to completing League One’s record transfer John Percy and Sam Dean
Birmingham City are closing in on a remarkable deal worth £10 million or more for Fulham forward Jay Stansfield.
League One promotion favourites Birmingham have been in talks with Fulham all of today and are now set to complete a record transfer for their division.
Stansfield scored 13 goals on loan at Birmingham last season and even scored against his former club for Fulham in the Carabao Cup earlier this week.
Birmingham’s ambitious owners Knighthead have been determined to make a statement signing this month and are now set to sign Stansfield before the deadline.
The previous League One transfer record before this season was the £4 million paid by Sunderland for Will Grigg in January 20

It sounds crazy but if they get promotion due to his goals then 10 mil is well worth it.
He will score for fun at that level.
Fulham are taking the piss a little bit though. It would be funny if they keep teasing Birmingham and then rejecting at the last minute.

There’s something deeply wrong with the way money and finances are regulated when the entire second tier is priced out of a transfer

Just over 10 years ago, we signed Jack Butland from Birmingham for a cut-price fee due to their financial woes at the time.

Birmingham spunking £10 million, getting promoted and then immediately relegated again for breaking financial rules would genuinely make my prostate explode.

The League one regulations are the correct way in my view and the Championship needs to change to the same or similar. If a club can put the funds in and have them held for the duration of a players contract that should be enough. No worry of clubs folding either due to owners outspending their resources.

Think the player himself is lacking a bit of ambition here but he obviously enjoyed his time there so good luck to him…..

Strange choice for him to go and play in league 1 for at least a year at that stage in his career. Clearly a good player at Championship level so you’d imagine he’ll score for fun down there.

Big pressure on Brum with this signing. Hope he has a season of niggles😉 I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. Look at Matt O’Reillly. £25m plus from Celtic to Brighton and a Crawley clogger wrecks his ankle. Stansfield will be a target.

Lunacy. One player will have cost more than multiple entire squads to assemble in that league.

With the money they are spending surley if they get promoted they will fall under championship rules again (that's if they don't change) and will be ready for a points deduction

They are throwing it around, Dykes is on 26k a week which is mad for a league 1 player, no doubt they will be paying Stansfield somewhere in the same region.
