Evening all. Quick question, anyone been to Alexandria or Luxor in Egypt before? I fly from Budapest to Cairo end of December (never been) and then onto Tunis. Keen to do the pyramids, Carthage, smoke some decent shisha and relax at some decent spas.
But I'm weighing up whether to do both Alexandria and Luxor, either or neither. Also a view on Cairo or Tunis from anyone that's been would be cool, cheers ๐

Cairo is the second biggest shit hole I've ever visited behind Delhi which is head and shoulders in first place, there isn't an area called Garbage City for nothing. It's also the city with worst driving I've ever seen. There is historical sites and lots of places of interest don't get me wrong but you never get left alone and there's often just filth surrounding them........

No mate it was 15 years ago. Should have been going back for a wedding but Covid kicked in and it was cancelled. It's the scammers that are the worst (again similar to Northern India), it's just so tiring. And the filth is off the chart, and it's not necessarily linked to poverty either Pakistan for example is relatively clean (absolutely spotless compared to parts of Egypt and India) and the people are beyond helpful and friendly........

And preferably some sun. Concur with Prestwick about Cairo for similar reasons and also as it happens Delhi but I don't mind Old Delhi. It obviously helps if you're with a local. A good alternative is a good guide because if you're sightseeing you'll be looking at shit which you'll have no idea what it is. Final tip, carry some soft tissue paper with you, if you have the need to relieve yourself, you won't find any. You'll definitely get Shai and Shisha not sure about sun in December.

Ran into the toilets desperately and was faced with about a dozen blokes all stooping taking a dump down a hole in the floor. When In Rome! My highlight was the deaf KFC by the pyramids and a guy on a moped giving a couple of goats a lift

I'm a bit snookered with holidays now we have two granddaughters both abroad one in Australia the other in Germany. We visit Germany 2 or 3 times a year and they are visiting for 10days over Christmas which is brilliant. And we visit Australia once a year for a month for the last two years after that I've not got much money left for other trips. So im off to NSW at the end of July 2025 for a month and a couple of week long trips to Frankfurt in 2025 and that's our lot although we're happy and lucky to be able to do that.
