This was the year I started going home and away.
A season with a poor start, and poor ending, with some really good stuff in the middle.
A crazy December, full of goals. A mini cup run, and some games I can still remember vividly.
Our average league attendance that season was 9,987.
Micky Mills, Red and white army.....

I look back on it with the rose tinted specs of a young lad but I loved the bulk of the Mills era, consistently inconsistent and as likely to win 5 as we were to lose 6 but there were some great games. 86/87 was when my dad started to take me to away games regularly as well.........

There are a series of these and watched them all. Really good and interesting. They seem to stop at around 1987-88 which is a shame as that was around the time I started supporting. Hoping there are more to come!

Great season & memories there, remember that season well. Had the Stoke Hi-Tec tracksuit for my birthday that season & my brother had the yellow away kit, all very rare. These were the days I used to get a real buzz pre match on the way to the ground..

My first game was that season after we'd moved down in summer 86 - I can remember we scored in the first minute in my first game and had convinced myself it was Paul Ware v Leyton Orient but instead it was Carl Saunders v Shewsbury.
Would love see one from the following season as 3-1 v Man City boxing day is probably my favourite childhood memory going Stoke with my dad.

It was a horrible start, but one of my favourite all time seasons. The run where seemed to score goals for fun was just amazing.
A real rollercoaster. The signing of Brian Talbot was a game changer, what a class player he was.
So many good memories in the Boothen End and a few heartbreakers (Coventry, WBA, Shrewsbury)
Loved Carl Saunders and Keith Bertschin celebrations, Georgie Berry's penalties and Dixon and Bould were just top drawer players. The youthful energy of local boy Phil Heath. There was a lot to like. Mills was always likeable as a manager too.

That's a good review that brings back a lot of good memories.
I think that's Brian Talbot and not Tony Kelly in the opening signings sequence though...
Talbot was signed from Arsenal from memory, and really made the team tick.
I remember them beating Blackburn 1-0, but they created so many chances I knew we had the makings of a decent team.
The big wins against Leeds and Sheff Utd, plus 6 v Grimsby in the cup. No doubt somebody will correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the Grimsby keeper taunted with "Gypo, gypo" all night long? When we played was it Shrewsbury in the New Year, we scored really early and I thought here comes another bucket load of goals, but that's how it stayed.
Some characters in that team, with Ooh Georgie Berry, the young Bould & Dixon, Zico, Spider & Foxy. Bertschin & Morgan up front didn't seem to be that good, but in fairness scored a few goals. Happy days.

Great to see that A game that sticks out for me for obvious reasons was the 2-0 home defeat to Derby in early November,we played really well and it gave me loads of optimism for the months ahead after that. Derby scored 2 very good goals through Phil Gee and Geirant Williams but the standout moment was the brawl in the Derby net after one of our corners(I think). It really was a free for all and I actually spoke to Eric Steele(Derby keeper that day)about it a couple of weeks back at my mates book launch where he was a guest panelist. He remembered it well and said either Georgie Berry or Steve Bould kicked him in the bollocks😊which set it all off.He reckons that was one of Derby’s standout games on their way to promotion that season.Sadly we faded after looking so promising at one stage

A Bertch hattrick of headers and Bouldy didnt give Trevor Senior a sniff Then Bertch got injured and Saunders came in……

The creator of the video has posted similar reviews for several seasons in the 80’s. Well worth a watch, I really enjoyed them.

Happy days. Yeah there’s one or two small errors but generally a great watch. Stoke should really have won promotion that season, the team was good enough. We had a dreadful start and a poor finish but still finished only six points off the play offs. The critical issue was the injury to Steve Bould. The defence simply caved in without him.

After we beat Sunderland I thought promotion was on but it went downhill quickly
I remember Denis Smith being very bitter in his after match interview which was unlike him

Remember going to Shrewsbury on Easter saturday. We were still in the mix and had got a good draw at tabletopping Derby the previous week. A hot day and thousands of Stokies descended on Shrewsbury. We were 3-0 down in half an hour and ended up losing 4-1. Lee Dixon scored an own goal. Think it was probably then we knew it wasnt going to happen. Such a shame as 3 months earlier we looked unbeatable

You could see that Wright was going to be special , same as Cole when he played for us V Fulham, unfortunately Lou passed on him when available

After we beat Sunderland I thought promotion was on but it went downhill quickly I remember Denis Smith being very bitter in his after match interview which was unlike him If I remember correctly, there was a huge amount of water on the pitch that night, following a downpour. Amazing that we only missed out on the play offs by 6 points after things started so badly then went downhill after the FA Cup defeat.

That was indeed a very memorable and enjoyable match, but I’ve never seen any footage of it, I don’t think any cameras were there unfortunately. I think you are right, i've never seen the goals replayed anywhere. If my memory serves me right, the Kamara goal was almost a sliding tackle style swipe from the edge of the area?? To be honest this was probably the zenith of my supporting until 1992 - to be introduced to The Vic with 12,000 away fans in fancy dress with all the inflatables was pretty mind-blowing for 10 year old me. Pretty sure Gleghorn and Biggins both played for Man City that day.

The West Brom and Shrewsbury away games that season when we were in really strong positions were as typically-Stoke as you could get…… Those were the two away games I went to!!! Didn’t Garth Crooks score an hat trick for West Brom? I remember Keith Bertschin scored for us and still celebrated like he had scored in a cup final though we were 4-1 down. (Was it 4-1?)
