You are lucky, London gets 5 times more than the north of England, and probably 10 times more than Stoke. Have they finished that new dual carriageway from Belfast to Derry/Londonderry yet ? At least you have a say in which party makes the big decisions to govern the country. I know all too well about the poverty in the North East as I have ALOT of family from Redcar which funnily enough had their steel works demolished yesterday. The same steel works which was used to help build 9 of the 10 largest buildings in the world before being shutdown under Tory rule 7 years ago. I think if the North East could, they'd probably defer to join Scotland too to escape the grips of tory austerity and inequality. We've not had a new dual carriageway from Belfast to Derry. A dual carriageway from Belfast to the North coast was already there and has been for years. They've simply extended part of it but it's certainly not a new dual carriageway between Belfast and Derry. It used to end at Antrim didn't it, when I drove that way in May there was definitely loads of new sections in use and when still on parts of the old road you could see the new road being constructed over to the left.

To go 120 miles from London to Birmingham takes 1 hour 30 mins. This will become 50 minutes under HS2. Our public transport is a joke.

It's why it pisses me off that London get so much money per head for public transport compared to the rest of the UK. Especially considering those living in London are also earning a helluva lot more than the rest of us and can afford to pay more for public transport. Also to be pety. You can get a train between Stoke and Leeds which includes a pit stop in Manchester to change platforms in 1 hour 45 mins. So it's still just under 30% quicker.

Where now for her SNP party, i was hearing last week that the Scottish Government was thinking of charging those who they consider "well off" to pay for their NHS treatment How do they think they would they manage at all without money from Westminster? A few years ago they were touting the idea all the oil in the North Sea would make them a richer country, that's all gone a bit quiet especially since Cop26 and all the posturing and rhetoric that was spouted. Free University, free prescriptions, what next free smack for the addicts in the drug capital of Europe, the EU have already said they don't want Scotland, they won't be able to use the £, they will have to start to pay the billions of debt back as well as pay for the assets that are currently owned by the UK. What will become of the Scottish people working south of the border will they have to apply for work permits and et a Scottish passport? Then there's the issue of the border who's going to pay for rebuilding of Hadrian's Wall? Part of me is pissing myself laughing that the horrible fuckwit Jimmy Krankie lost but I can't help wondering how they would have managed a huge mess independence would have bought to her. Gouranga. Good heavens are people really this poorly informed Did you ever consider informing yourself rather than relying on Fred from Facebook? I don't do facebook and if you consider Jeremy Vine and Radio 2 uniformed as there was a debate on there with lots of informed people ringing in then yes I did consider informing myself, who informed you? Gouranga.

Has this country not learned a thing? Referendums are shit. The public are stupid. There should not be one again. There should be a referendum absolutely. The Scottish people deserve the opportunity to have independence and would be better off apart from the UK in my opinion. The Irish and Scottish hate the torys and we face the brunt of tory austerity because there are no votes for them to win in our countries. So there's no motive to help. If its a voluntary union then the Scottish deserve the opportunity to choose whether or not they want to stay part of it. If they want to live in a third world country then they should go for it. It’s an absolutely daft idea. But even if I thought it was good for them, I’m just anti referendum. Nothing I’ve seen from any one of them suggests they add any value to anything really.

Elections you are giving the chance for someone to decide these things for you on a broad spectrum. It’s as the title says general. That’s fine. Being so specific doesn’t work. Take Brexit. No one knew what it actually was, no one knew what they were voting for in the leave camp and the idea of Brexit meant different things to different people. And tbh I wouldn’t action any vote on them unless a clear majority (over 80% at least) actually voted for it.

This might help to explain the difference between investment by UK Regions www.statista.com/statistics/1004135/uk-gdp-by-region/Don't they go hand in hand though? You invest more money into an area and you'll get more out of it in terms of GDP. And let's not forget how highly skewed the statistics for GDP in London are. Royal Dutch Shell is HQ there so their GDP contribution gets recognised as London. But there are no oil fields or refinerys in London. What percentage of their worldwide petrol stations are in London? Accounting highly skews the GDP. Should we base investments at an even more granual level and invest significant sums into the public services for the city of London Square Mile and just cut off the tube in areas such as Hackney? Anyway back on topic. If the Scottish people want independence then they deserve the ability to have a referendum and vote for it. That's what democracy is. Whether it will or won't benefit Scotland, who knows? But if we're a democratic union then they deserve to have the option to vote to leave if they wish.

Don't they go hand in hand though? You invest more money into an area and you'll get more out of it in terms of GDP. Not necessarily, you have the law of diminishing returns
Government spending contributes about 40% to UK GDP,much higher during Covid Essentially Government should creates the conditions for Companies to invest and increase output
Ultimately it comes down to Political decisions
GDP is not just a single measure Link shows how Regional GDP Data is sourced
www.ons.gov.uk/economy/grossdomesticproductgdp/methodologies/introducinggdpforthecountriesoftheukandtheregionsofenglandAnd let's not forget how highly skewed the statistics for GDP in London are. Royal Dutch Shell is HQ there so their GDP contribution gets recognised as London. But there are no oil fields or refinerys in London. What percentage of their worldwide petrol stations are in London? Accounting highly skews the GDP. This is not how GDP is calculated if you read the linkShould we base investments at an even more granual level and invest significant sums into the public services for the city of London Square Mile and just cut off the tube in areas such as Hackney? To a large extent this is exactly what happens. You have more affluent Councils and less affluent Councils in London.Guess what the less affluent ones are able to spend less on Public Services nor have the ability to raise extra Council Taxes Anyway back on topic. If the Scottish people want independence then they deserve the ability to have a referendum and vote for it. That's what democracy is. I agree entirely which is the subject of the thread. As should NI and judging by latest Census Poll in NI its not too far offWhether it will or won't benefit Scotland, who knows? But if we're a democratic union then they deserve to have the option to vote to leave if they wish. Completely agree which is one of the big disadvantages of UK not having a Codified Constitution unlike your neighbours to the South who when matter which are of a fundamental change must be approved by a Referendum Despite Bayerns strident objections its a system that works quite well and Citizens feel included

I'm sure Sturgeon wanted to say to the Reporter "F Off and don't be asking stupid questions" but that would make a bigger headline It's an example of a Loaded Question like "Have you stopped beating your wife" no matter whether you answer yes or no it is a negative to something that never happened Apologies the discussion of this was on another thread on MB but if your genuinely interested a simple Google search will tell you it had nothing to do with Sturgeon of the SNP

Friend of a friend of a cousin twice removed would be just over £2k a year better off on the same salary moving down south or put another way would spend two less weeks a year working for the tax man. However, so long as university education remains free, prescriptions remain free, The NHS runs slightly less shit than the rest of the UK and there is the slightest whiff they may actually give a shit about poor people he's not bothered about paying it. Refreshingly it seems a view held by enough people fortunate enough to be in that bracket to make it a goer. Although, this comes with the condition that either the SNP deliver a referendum rather than simply dangling a carrot and are running seriously low on free passes on running a competent government - if folk are paying more they expect more and won't put up with bullshit carrots.

The SNP are desperate for a referendum. It's the tories doing all they can to block it. Guess they don't want to be known as the party to destroy the NHS and lose Scotland to the UK so doing their best to hold it off till they lose power at the next election. Also you have to take into account the cheaper property in Scotland too. An extra 2k in London compared to Dundee would still find you worse off after expenses. Fair play to the SNP with these changes. They were also the most vocal about raising benefits in line with inflation too.
