I was in Holland recently for a few days, their train/tram/metro system is fantastic around Amsterdam and I was amazed.
I bought a 2 day ticket and I spent 35euro on the travel, this is how far it got me:
Train from airport to Amsterdam Tram rides around the city - I did 8 separate journeys Metro - I think it was well in excess of a dozen metro rides Train back to airport Also included the bus, but I didn’t use them
All that for 35 euro on a fantastic infrastructure, clean, airy and bang on time.
I flew into Heathrow home and there is all the advertising for the Heathrow express/Lizzy Line - £25 for a single trip!!!!!
That’s the difference between a country that prides itself on providing great and affordable transport for its people vs a country that wants to scalp anyone that so much as goes near a train station.

i dont care who owns or runs them i want it to be cheap so i can hop on the train to go a game for a reasonable amount or i can grab young miss flea79 and travel a little further afield for less than taking the car and instead of her being sat in the back she can sit next to me and talk to me about what she can see through the window and we can actually have some time together instead of the system we have now

Splitticketing is a good website with vastly reduced prices where you just have to hop on and off a bit more. No biggy. I went to Wembley a couple of years back for a Fleetwood Mac gig. It cost me £17 return, I had to change 3 times and it took an hour or so longer but I enjoyed it because, as you say, it was chilled and loads of time for chat. In fact there are some deals where you don’t even need to get off, you just buy the tickets separately but it works out you stay on

Dunno, but the one I used Sunday was fucking shit. Couldn’t get a train from kidsgrove to Wolverhampton, so had to get a taxi to stoke. then a crappy 5 carriage thing turns up (full obviously) so had to stand in the aisle crushed for 40 mins, and cost me £17 for the privelage.

We had a similar experience in Amsterdam last December, I complimented a local on the excellence of their train services and he was scathing in response, saying that 'recently' they had been awful. I was very surprised but I guess he would have more experience of the service than my few days, although I would also surmise that his expectation might be somewhat higher that mine

It’s always pissed me off that I can’t get a train back to Derby after a night match and it’s been the same for years.Absolute disgrace in this day and age

It can be done here. Think I paid about £5.80 plus £1 parking for park-and-ride return from Hooton to Liverpool on Merseyrail a few months back.

We’ve already got public transport, It’s called Transport for London, Transport for Manchester, Transport for West Midlands. Whilst the rest of the country goes to hell.
We’re being raped by foreign countries who own our railways (not the expensive maintenance part), who are subsidised to the tune of hundreds of millions and we pay more get a worse service and our money goes to a foreign country.
What other country would allow a farcical situation like this? Do we own any railways abroad?
Avanti, in Avanti west coast, is the Italian national rail organisation eventually as they are owned by TrentItalia, who are owned by the government.
It’s fucking moronic. Left right, capitalist or communist I don’t care this is just stupid.
We pay more, get less, and send our money abroad.
There is no “choice” for anyone who wants to get the 9:30 train to Manchester other than get the car. There is no second train, or track. Choice doesn’t exist so the idea there is a market is just bullshit.
We should bring it back in house like every other country and maybe see if we can go and buy some franchises abroad?
