Baggies confident of signing Swift - and want Wallace from Millwall, and Lenihan from Blackburn. Seem to be looking at the top-end, expensive Championship Bosman market with their remaining parachute money theathletic.com/3299617/2022/05/08/this-west-brom-squad-is-without-heroes-that-is-what-bruce-must-add-this-summer/He already knows who he wants. Albion are optimistic that John Swift, the out-of-contract Reading midfielder, can be persuaded that The Hawthorns is the ideal stage to show off the talents that have made him one of the Championship’s most prolific creators, even in a team that has struggled this season. Swift does things that gets fans excited.
Jed Wallace, another player near the top of Bruce’s wanted list, has a similar ability from a wider role.
And Darragh Lenihan, the Blackburn captain, has natural leadership qualities, although Bruce’s ability to move for the Irish defender might well hinge on how successfully he can offload some of the existing centre-backs in his squad.
There are others on the list, too — with money scarce in this summer’s market and free agents attractive options, the competition will be fierce and Albion will almost certainly miss out on a target or two as he seeks the “five or six” changes he is planning. How did Mowatt do for them last season? He seemed to be THE Championship signing last summer after his season with Barnsley but I feel like I didn't see much of him at WBA. Wallace would fit one of the wide roles here well. Very good player but probably wants a fair wedge of a signing on fee and wages after leaving Millwall on a free.

Could you see him playing wing back? I meant one of the forward three to be honest. I don't think he'd be there defensively if he played at wing back. I know he's a hard worker, but wing back is a bastard of a role.

West Brom fans have slated Mowatt and accused him of being overweight and lazy....... He looked overweight at Barnsley. Just goes to show how certain players suit certain roles/clubs. When you're smashing them in from all angles every week, you get away with being fat and lazy. When that's not happening, it's a different story.

Damn. Three top signings for West Brom if they get them. Not sure where Wallace would fit into our back three system but the other two would.
Just shows what this manager, or any other manager is up against here.
We're literally going to be looking at lower end Championship, higher end League One players with the hope they hit the ground running and dovetail with young players from our own Academy and on loan from elsewhere.
Wouldn't be surprised to see Curtis Davies rock up here.

Davies wants to stay at Derby judging by his interview I heard but obviously that depends on circumstances. For a bloke of 37 to play every minute of a championship season is a great achievement for him, player of the season also.Linked to Bristol City in our local press.

What's the opinion on here like if we were to allow Powell to leave but signed John Swift to replace him? Good move IMHO.

The transfer window isn't open till June (I assume) and we can't formally talk to contracted players until then. As I remember there were some 'fantastic' signings by the likes of West Brom, QPR, Forest and Middlesbrough all of whom have come to nothing this season.

So sounds like Pogba, Dembele and Mbappe aren't coming here after all. Fine, we'll just go after Antonio Rudiger & Luca Modric then...
Looking forward to all the fake links this summer!

I wonder how many players are coming off what are now considered extremely inflated contracts. Clubs appear to be increasingly willing to let even their better players run contracts down rather then extend them, presumably because the market is still adjusting to find what is the new norm and also to try and ensure that they are not caught out by any weird/wonderful EFL rules which may/may not be brought in around salary caps.

Fuck me football's dead isnt it... Moore, who was stripped of the Royals captaincy prior to his exit at the start of the year, has one year remaining on his deal at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

Would have thought Swift would end up at a lower end Premiership club. Someine like Fulham or whoever goes up via the playoffs

Reading seem to think they've got a chance of keeping Swift, but when you look at their finances being cut to the bone, the chances seem remote www.getreading.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/reading-swift-west-brom-transfer-23913506Reading FC are making a last-ditch attempt to keep star man John Swift at the club.
Despite a report in The Athletic saying West Bromwich Albion are 'optimistic' they can persuade Swift to join, it is understood a move to the Baggies is far from done.
Royals are able to offer existing players new contracts in spite of being under severe transfer restrictions from the English Football League (EFL). The club is unable to spend any money on transfer fees and can only recruit players who are free agents or players on loan, on one-year contracts.
The wage bill must also be cut from £21million to £16million
Swift, who it is understood has five clubs keeping tabs on him about a potential move for next season, has been one of Reading's higher earners in recent years so any new deal would need him to take a big pay cut to remain at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

Bloody hell, they’d be 3 top signings for this level. Plus Dike who’s hardly played since he signed due to injury. They could be up for a promotion push on paper. I’d worry about Bruce’s tactics being dated if I were a WBA fan, I thought they get shut of him tbh.

Never seen the lad play but a quick scout on Youtube, from his time at Crawley, screams box to box to me from very limited evidence.
Very similar to Baker.
EDIT:
Another video of him here at Plymouth - seems very much a box to box and looks very quick:
