How does the midfield look in that set up. There are no excuses for that performance from Foden tonight, he looked like a right mard arse at times 4141 Rice Saka Belligham Foden Palmer Kane It’s the only way we should be playing. 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁

That was a typical England performance at a major tournament… Foden for me would not be in the starting 11 & should have came off at ht. we kept on messing around with it at the back then lumping it long against a team full of giants. It’s just going to keep on coming back.
Personally I thought it was crying out for Eze & Gordon. Two players which would run at them & push us up the pitch.
The positive is that a win is a win & it’s better to have a poor performance early on rather than a knockout game. Southgate really has to learn from it though.

It's tournament football and we've been shit at it for decades. We've been loads better under Southgate at doing what is required.

The sooner Luke Shaw comes back the better. Trippier offers nothing going forward. Bellingham needs to play as an 8, Foden as a 10 with Palmer as an option and possibly Gordon or Eze on the left. Saka looks as if 90 minutes is a bit of a struggle too. Southgate is so hesitant with substitutions. He needs to seize the bloody initiative when things are going against us. We were 1-0 up and gave away an xG of 0.17. We defended superbly well and they barely threatened us bar a couple of decent long shots. Not quite sure how your reply is that relevant to my post. Thought the central defenders were good and Walker fine. I’m just advocating a tweak or too and not overreacting. Trent was an experiment that might not have legs. Without a left back it’s throwing the balance out. Foden got nothing from Trippier and is uncomfortable stuck out on the left.

I don't know what other left backs we had to consider, but we probably should have planned a bit better in that position.

I think we've only won the opening game once before in the Euros that was last time and we got to the final. Not winning Game #1 causes all sorts of problems.

Typical Southgate tactics we weren’t even interested in scoring in last 20 mins. Terrible. If Southgate ever managed us I’d start and follow the women’s team. He’s just one big bore fest

Man City play it and we have as good players. What’s so funny? Club football and International tournament football are two entirely different concepts. Different footballers can step up into this cauldron... others can't. Phil Foden is under Peps wing and feels comfortable. I'm not being critical of Foden per sa....just dont think he's going to do the business for England. Bowen did more in ten minutes than Foden did all match. Some players suit internationals, some don't.

It just all seemed so unnecessary when you could see they came to defend yet we somehow invited them onto us and gave them confidence. That said I’m looking forward to the next game and hopefully a more assured performance

Don’t think it’s anything to do with a sense of entitlement, it’s more the manner of the performance, i knew Serbia wouldn’t be easy, but we allowed them to gain control and didn’t play to our strengths. We have the players to go for the jugular, win games in the first half, but under Southgate we just don’t do it.

Excellent and well deserved win. A lot of ridiculous and hysterical criticism as you would expect on here. Rare for England to win first game in a big tournament, so most welcome. Bellingham was brilliant. Excellent....no it was very laboured Well deserved win... no we were hanging on Bellingham was brilliant...he scored but overall very average by his standards Rare first game win...yes and actually at this stage all that matters is getting into the knockout phase.

Mixed feelings after that one. First half was promising, second half was awful. But we secured the win... Southgate has massively improved England but massive questions about his ceiling. He's our boss for the euros though so I want him to succeed 100%.

After that. They dominated, partially second half.
Saka had much the better the game than Foden.
3 points. We move on but it's worrying they dominated us . Anyway we'll piss this group.

It was a typical nervy tournament opener, i think we looked leggy in the second half and that was one of the reason we dropped so deep, i think that could be down to nervous energy of an opening game.
The most important thing was the win, we only scored 2 goals in our three group games in the last euros, 1-0, 0-0 and 1-0.
Let’s all relax and see how we perform on Thursday.

So just he one actual midfielder? Ya dreaming No. Bellingham and Foden do it for their clubs and they seem to do fine. It’s the only way this England team should be set up. I personally think Foden is a waste of an England shirt. I’ve seen him have one good game for us in a competition (I don’t often bother with the friendlies). I personally think we just need to focus on getting Bellingham and Kane on the same page. Kane likes to drop deep, Bellingham likes to charge forwards. In theory, they should be awesome together. I’d swap Foden out for someone with some energy in midfield and have Saka and Palmer out wide as you suggest.
