Why, they did next to nothing. 0-0 would have been fair. But we scored so how would it, we did more than they did and deserved the win in a poor game, job done.

How can he be world class with Man city and yet i’m still waiting to see Foden put in a decent England performance thought he added very little apart from winning a few kicks and providing a handful of undercooked passes. We need to do much better and up the intensity

I'm not sure what the best approach is.
Probably not watched enough Premier League this season.
I think I'd go 4231 with Rice and Bellingham behind Foden at 10, with Saka and Eze either side.
There are compromises everywhere you look though.

Bellingham interview vs Kane interview - if you didn’t know the team you would never guess Kane was the captain.
Poor game though, early win is important and you could forgive a team for not getting out of second gear unnecessarily, but that wasn’t England, we were quite sloppy and worryingly narrow at times.

That was like the croatia game in 2018, fast start looking good and pinging the ball about for fun - suddenly have to start defending a bit, stop doing what we were so well and have zero response to it from a tactical perspective other than to just drop deeper. Can we not have someone on the bench and just say to Gareth “alright mate, you know you can make a sub at any time you want? You are also allowed to change the tactics mid game if you want- it’s not cheating” Its his main weakness really. Southgate has done an excellent job building/moulding the group of players into a team but he has no idea how to react tactically to situations where we are getting over-run. He'll at best make a like for like replacement. Overall i'm a Southgate fan though - the last few years have been brilliant to watch and hes made tournament qualification/progression a formality.

Glad for the win, but awful performance. This crop of Englishmen have every chance to write history but there’s one thing holding them back…..Gareth Southgate. We should have made the World Cup final in 2018, his pragmatic worried approach ruined that, we should have won the euros 2020, same applies. And it will apply again. He’s defended as a successful England manager but he’s won nothing in an era where we should have been successful.

The curse of Southgate again. Awful subs that made things worse. Not got the balls or nouse to see an England team lift a trophy. That game epitomises the bloke.

If he's dogshit then drop him.

We absolutely did not control any possession after 20 mins we wer like rabbits in headlights constantly giving the ball away backing off and allowing Serbia to do as the please. Forgot how successful we were before he got here. We've always ever been a second tier international side, bar a small period of time in the 1960s. You'll have your wish after this tournament anyway, so we'll see what happens. I suspect the new manager will do even worse.

The sooner Luke Shaw comes back the better. Trippier offers nothing going forward. Bellingham needs to play as an 8, Foden as a 10 with Palmer as an option and possibly Gordon or Eze on the left. Saka looks as if 90 minutes is a bit of a struggle too. Southgate is so hesitant with substitutions. He needs to seize the bloody initiative when things are going against us.

We were 1-0 up and gave away an xG of 0.17. We defended superbly well and they barely threatened us bar a couple of decent long shots.

A lot of ridiculous and hysterical criticism as you would expect on here.
Rare for England to win first game in a big tournament, so most welcome.
Bellingham was brilliant.
