There was something terrifying about him with those eyes. He certainly took no shite and if there were more like him VAR wouldn’t be a thing. Great soundtrack too Certainly possessed a scary demeanour,but his real authority came from his consistency and just getting far more important decisions right than wrong. Yeh kind of what I meant. He was basically always right and nobody disagreed with his decisions. From what I recall anyway. |

No need for VAR with him around. Easily the best referee I've seen. Thing is with refs familiarity breeds contempt. He was a very good ref but the more a ref officiates your team, the more likely an error against you and it doesn't get forgotten. Everton fans hate Collina. |

I think people correlate the success of a World Cup with how well their team does. For me, as in impressionable youngster I loved Mexico 86 and Italy 1990. England did well in both but the football generally wasn’t great. Four years later, i genuinely can’t remember turning the TV on and watching a single game. I had zero interest because we hadn’t qualified.

I remember watching that show once and he was talking about being cornered by the Ultra's and then when the camera switched back to him, you could clearly see the black eye that that the Ultras gave him |

I can’t think of one Bulgaria v Germany Hagi and pals playing good football for Rumania 3.2 v Argentina stood out Italy were entertaining bar the final Probably the best game was Brazil beating the Dutch, again 3.2 There were more goals, less 0.0s more attacking football than 1990 Romario was fantastic Italia 90 had the least goals and the most 0.0s of any World Cup we remember the drama because England's games were mostly dramatic but 94 saw better football, maybe less drama |

I'd suffered the Mills/Ball relegation season as my first introduction to football and didn't get it. Italia 90 and England did it for me. The strip, Panini sticker album, the Ciao coca cola mini footballs etc. Then high school was filled with gazetta and Serie A as the only regular football on domestic TV. 90 Minutes magazine, Macari's Stoke and eventually Fantasy Football on BBC 2. The 90s Juve and Milan teams. Sampdoria and Parma competing. Batigol at Fiorentina. I'll admit to loving watching Cantona during that era when I could,just because he didn't give a fuck, he knew he was the dogs. Fake Ronaldo couldn't lace his boots. I'm that deep in that if I won the lottery my first purchase wouldn't be a super car or luxury SUV, it'd be this garage-italia.com/en/hub/articles/fiat-panda-italia-90-2I know it's over romanticised but anyone who wants to argue otherwise can fuck off, fuck off some more and just keep fucking off.
