The massive rises in energy prices being seen right now are due to the increases in prices of fossil fuels. The best chance of preventing this happening over and over is to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The green movement didn't shut the UK pits and switch to imported coal, the British public did by wanting cheaper energy. The North Sea gas was always going to get more expensive as reserves got harder to get at. Nuclear remains an expensive option -cost has far more influence than environmentalists in its use in the UK. Net zero ain't happening, but if anyone other than the Farage (just about the only politician in the UK who can claim to be a bigger twat than Johnson), Trump, still thinks that the future lies in fossil fuels from Russia, China and the Middle East then they deserve whatever price hike they get at the next geopolitical crisis. And that's without climate change even coming into it. That her destroyed British mining to destroy union power Let's not forget this tosser's take on it www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-58107009

We're having a couple of days of hot weather and anyone would think the nation is on fire. Thousands being warned they will die, schools closing, people being told what to wear and to stay at home.
The health and safety fanatics are back in town and creeping out from behind their rocks.
The Guardian front page is beyond comical. They've put up a headline referring to the British heatwave with a picture of a fire in South East France - Not an uncommon occurrence in the middle of summer - and suggesting we are in some kind of apocalyptic war zone.
We're having a mini heatwave, get over it.

One thing which is continuing beyond all the present political furore is climate change. The scientific community is almost unanimous on the link between atmospheric CO2 and global temperatures. The evidence is quite clear. Nobody in the current debate as to who will be the next leader of the Conservative party seems to have addressed this - they are too busy fighting like ferrets in a sack and slagging each other off in a scrap to emerge the winner. Unfortunately, action required to address the problem goes beyond political boundaries and getting other countries to sign up to the required measures to deal with the problem is not easy - but I would expect whoever becomes the next Prime Minister to promote policies to alleviate the problem. How about requiring all new build properties to be fitted with solar panels for example? (Unless the aspect of the roof is not suitable). Housebuilders make huge profits and could well afford to do this.

At the rate some houses are flying up we would be miles ahead if someone had the foresight to do this, although it's an obvious win. There could also be scope for solar panels ontop of more government buildings - must be plenty of roof space. You could probably extend that out to businesses where they have the roof space.

There are lots of solar panels on govt buildings already, all our local authority bldgs have them, but you're right about new builds, you won't be surprised to learn that it was the developers who lobbied government not to legislate in that direction.

We need some form of population control. Anything else is just treating the symptoms, not the cause.

We need some form of population control. Anything else is just treating the symptoms, not the cause. We do. It's all around you right now. It might take a few decades for the full, knock-on impacts to come to fruition and I suspect it's not the kind of managed, gentle, voluntary population control you had in mind, but we're all contributing actively to it.

We need some form of population control. Anything else is just treating the symptoms, not the cause. I think that is subtly under way, birth rates have been on the decline for some time but I think will fall even more so. I know more and more people who have no intention of having kids or not having any more. It may not come as a suprise that out of my school year (I'm in my 30s) only a handful of us have kids.

I’ve said for years that global population increase is the biggest threat to human survival. It’s the rate of increase that is worrying because you will never stop population increase globally.

I'm in my 30s too mate and it's similar. Lots of mates are now just starting but they're thinking 1-2 kids while some have just decided not to. I mean it's often decided for them because they can't afford kids but it works out the same. It's shocking how many countries are similar. I always thought of countries like Bangladesh and Brazil as having big families but They're now down around the 2 kids mark.

We're having a mini heatwave, get over it. An incredibly ignorant post. It is, but Bianco is a libertarian, as well as being a bit florid and over-the-top in his language. So anything that stops everyone living their lives in complete freedom is anathema. Libertarianism in terms of burning fossil fuels, excess consumption, general contempt for the environment and our general belief in human exceptionalism (ie it'll all be fine because we're humans) over the last 150 odd years is precisely why we're heading for disaster. Even if people accept that we are heading for disaster (and that's a big stretch for many people) the fact that they won't be able to carry on their lives just as they currently are is too much for them. I wonder at what point the penny will actually drop?

Solar panels on all new builds with a favourable roof should have been done years ago. At the rate some houses are flying up we would be miles ahead if someone had the foresight to do this, although it's an obvious win. It's incredible that this isn't done already. And even if housebuilders object (as mentioned above) there's no real reason for them to. It could be the purchaser who pays, and the cost of solar panels added to a 25 year mortgage must be a fairly minimal oncost with respect to all the other expenses involved with buying, furnishing and maintaining a new build. And, with economies of scale, we could reasonably expect the actual unit cost of them to drop anyway. And, it should be insisted upon that the panels are made in the UK. Although useful in climates that get the kind of weather we're having regularly solar panels are excellent as the AC is powered via the solar In our climate wind power makes more sense as the majority of our power usage is in the cooler months vortexbladeless.com/technology-design/Perhaps one of these mounted on an exposed elevation would work well Next year or two I hope to build my own home as off grid as possible and hopefully something like the above could be affordable on a small scale project. I'd also have solar because of its higher predictability The true quality of life from a financial aspect for me is not how much money you have coming in but rather how much you have going out. If your main monthly cost of living is council tax and food, and you are able to grow as much as possible all year round, then that is true wealth. With an extensive wind/solar package you may be even capable of running an EV car dispensing with fuel costs and the vagaries of the market place The techno good life!

Probably greed but if each home owned a share in it they could reduce their energy use
