After Bond pretty much filled the screen schedules for the past couple of weeks, nice to see some new films out. Like, The Last Duel, for example. And it’s a pretty good film. Certainly overlong, but it has the big plus of the superb Jodie Comer and a superb fight sequence at the end, the aforementioned, titular Last Duel. Matt Damon and Adam Driver are ok. Leastways compared to Ms Comer. 7/10 Really enjoyed “The Last Duel” - an historically accurate account illustrating the roots of misogyny, drawing on Medieval France at the time of The Hundred Years’ War. At least that’s what Mrs. Klingon tells me - I thought the battle scenes were fucking brill.

WARHUNT
Where to begin? I'm exasperated!
Probably the most ludicrous film I've ever seen. Awful dialogue, zero attention to historical accuracy, acting straight out of an amdram village hall.
Set in 1945 our brave GIs set off to hunt for a DC10 brought down by evil crow feathers and discover the woods are full of mystery and evil.
Mickey Rourke, not only unrecognisable from his Harry Angel heart throb self of the 1980s but barely recognisable as a normal human being due to his addiction to plastic surgery, plays some sort of senior US soldier sporting inordinately long hair and a gold lamé eye patch supported by a bevvy of female soldiers on the frontline.
That such a film has been made in the modern era beggars belief
That said I'd suggest anyone else to watch it just for the sheer bonkersness of it all and to prove it does exist and not some weird daytime fever dream I've just had post-covid!
0.5/5

I saw TITANE last Sunday, have been meaning to post all week.
Exceptional French film from the director of Raw. Won the Palm D’or at Cannes last year.
Absolutely bonkers on so many levels and takes you in four different directions throughout the film.
Go and see it if you get the chance.
BELFAST and NIGHTMARE ALLEY out today.

But worth a watch.

It’s more weird but also less weird at the same time… I think what I mean by this is that the weirdness is less specific in Titane.

I managed to go in completely in the unknown, only seen images and that it was Julie Ducournau and it was all the more baffling/exhilarating for it. She doesn’t become attached to a car though, no.

Just watched “Mass” the new Jason Isaac/Martha Plimpton film. Very very tough watch, emotionally draining but the acting and dialogue were superb in the main……

It seems loved by lots of people… 94% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes is a pretty decent score.

Glasgow’s cinemas have finally reopened so I’m catching up with the rest of you. Any recommendations - things to look out for, ones to avoid. Big shout out for Nobody - basically John Wick and every bit as good, if you like that sort of thing. Probably even more lol moments. Loved it. No shout out for Nomadland - 2 hours of dreary misery. For folks who like worthy stuff. Sent me to sleep. Saw Nobody last night, agree with the John Wick comparison. I went into it blind so I was expecting it to be more about a regular guy who snaps rather than him turning out to be a fully trained badass. That Russian bloke reminded me of Jack Palance.

Watched “Nobody” last night with the fella from Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad whose name escapes me, it’s not going to win any awards but it was a really entertaining, funny 2 hours. I recommend it for a really easy watch……. I also watched Nobody last night. I much prefer it to John Wick which I watched for the first time a few weeks ago. Bob Odenkirk sells the pain better than anyone I've seen recently - makes me think I could be his character! I'm excited about the next series of Better Call Saul, and it was great to see Odenkirk in something else. A bit of a film marathon for me over the last week or so... I Give It a Year - it seems to split opinion but I found some scenes hilarious (maybe shouldn't have been billed as a romantic comedy?). Then all these are recently released: Kajillionaire - quirky film starring Evan Rachel Wood who basically lives by ripping rich people off (as taught by her parents) - a bit boring I thought. Spider-Man: No Way Home - a lot of fun in some ways that could be big spoilers, but Spider-Man 2 (with Toby Maguire) is still peak Spider-Man for me and nothing else has come close. Minari - good film about a Korean family starting a farm in 1980s Arkansas. The Kid Detective - supposed comedy, but I found it boring, and the dark twist didn't work. The Hunt - a group of strangers end up in a field and don't know why. Not as good as the brilliant Bacurau but still an entertaining film, and Betty Gilpin was great in it. Not to be confused with the outstanding Danish film called The Hunt starring Mads Mikkelsen. Judas and the Black Messiah - a guy tries to infiltrate the Black Panther Party in the late 1960s. Decent enough but felt overlong. Riders of Justice (recommended on here?) - Mads Mikkelsen brilliant as always. One of those action thrillers that you don't know where it's going next. Sometimes the humour was off with the tone, but definitely the best film I've watched recently.

Just watched 7 Prisoners on Netflix.
A subtitled Brazilian film about modern day slavery. Netflix sums it up as follows… A hard-hitting drama that feels disconcertingly real, 7 Prisoners blends sharp storytelling with a searing social conscience.
It’s a pretty good summary.
It’s also quite brilliant. As well as disturbing and thought provoking. And absolutely disconcertingly real.
9.5/10

Never heard of it before. 3 friends find 4 million dollars in a crashed plane and it goes wrong from there.
7.2/10 a good watch.

I watched "The Kitchen" last night, based on a true story I believe about 3 women in Hells Kitchen in the 70's who take over their husbands mafia empire after they get sent to prison.
I have nothing much to say other than. "it was really poor"
3/10.

Watched the 13th last night. The film explores the "intersection of race, justice, and mass incarceration in the United States" contending that black slavery has a continuum from abolition to the present day by means of the 13th amendment (via Jim Crow). It’s a compelling and heartbreaking film at its most effective when telling the stories of individuals who have been on the receiving end of “justice”. But I was left with a feeling that I hadn’t seen the whole picture. That it’s analysis was too simplistic and one-sided. In short, the film drifted into polemic. No bad thing though that a film should stimulate thought. I was pleased therefore to discover a review of the film in the African American Intellectual History Society that looked more deeply into and challenged some of the film’s arguments. That article, Mass Incarceration and Its Mystification: A Review of The 13th, is well worth a read. Likewise the film is well worth watching. 7/10

Looking forward to seeing "Titane" - "RAW" was genuinely unnerving and weird.......... I think this is better than RAW personally. It’s more weird but also less weird at the same time… I think what I mean by this is that the weirdness is less specific in Titane. Sorry youth - but I suggest the weirdness is laser-like specific in "RAW" compared to "Titane". Won't spoil by going into too many specifics, but: homoerotic atmosphere in French provincial fire stations, miraculous conception by automobile, human/car hybrid mutant, murder as a reasonable reaction to human contact.......... I loved it by the way. Not sure where I've been or how I got there, but worth it for the ride alone.

Yeah but cannibalism at a veterinary college (weird) compared to all that weird shite you mention. It’s like she took on board her weirdness was accepted and liked with RAW and then thought right then, I’ll show them how outrageous I can really get.
