Glasgow’s cinemas have finally reopened so I’m catching up with the rest of you. Any recommendations - things to look out for, ones to avoid. Big shout out for Nobody - basically John Wick and every bit as good, if you like that sort of thing. Probably even more lol moments. Loved it. No shout out for Nomadland - 2 hours of dreary misery. For folks who like worthy stuff. Sent me to sleep. Another for Nobody. Only caught it at the weekend as it arrived on HBO Max. We pay for a few services and I have rented stuff in the past to only see it arrive on one of the streaming services we pay for a week or so later so now I'm a tight git and wait. But yep, excellent entertainment and highly recommended. Only seen the 1st John Wick but saw the comparisons. John Wick 2/3 worth the time?

Yeah my wife made me watch them over Christmas as I had only seen the original Matrix...the things you do for love peace and quiet. I thought they were pants and wasn't much for the 4th one either. I've seen worse...just nothing I'd ever re-watch or recommend

Must rewatch as i aint seen it for decades. Nope. You’re thinking of the infinitely superior Wanderers. One of my favourite films. I always associate the two films as they cover similar topics, came out the same year and have very similar titles. But one is superb, the other just ok.

Ah yes that's it The Wanderers. Literally all i really remember about the film was that line. Cos i had watched it with a few mates it became a daft catch phrase we used. Childish but very funny to us idiots

Just watching To Hell and Back the life story or Audie Murphy the most decorated US soldier in the Second World War. Great insight into the kid who went into history as a soldier and movie star.

Watched The Power Of The Dog.
It’s getting rave reviews and plenty of tips to bag a bunch of Oscars.
I can see why.
Be warned. It’s a slow burner. Painfully slow at times. Full of portentous doom. But pay attention. It’s all heading towards a conclusion. And there is meaning in everything that happens right from the opening dialogue (even if what happens is sooooooooo sloooooooow).
Stick with it.
(I must admit I came close to giving up about half way through!)
By the end you realise what a superbly constructed film this is both in terms of the plot as well as character development. It is also wonderfully acted and beautifully shot.
It’s one of those films that will live long in the memory because there is so much happening (even when it seems nothing much is happening!) that makes you think again and again about the significance of a bunch of stuff in the film.
9.5/10

Many people would switch off halfway through because the plot is so slow at revealing itself. It was the superb acting that kept me glued to it and the ending was well worth the effort. I'll also give it 9.5 out of 10. OS.

Yes… the JW sequels are excellent (unlike the Matrix ones which are pants!). Nobody knocks John Wick as far as I'm concerned. The series are masterpieces of film noir, so you've got to like that sort of stuff to appreciate it. Every character is brilliant in them. I love the way action is portrayed as if the outside world doesn't exist at all even though everything is happening amongst it. Me and my eldest grandson are addicts and we're already making plans to see the next one together on the big screen. After JW, I love the Bowery King who keeps pigeons, and also 'Lovejoy' (Ian McShane) gets to show what a brilliant actor he can be as Winston the hotel manager. 10/10 for me. OS.

Saw Parallel Mothers today.
A Spanish language drama (with sub titles) primarily following the lives of two women who initially meet in a maternity hospital and whose lives become intertwined subsequently and a back story of the exhumation of a mass grave from the time of the civil war.
I didn’t have much in the way of expectations for this film, but I loved it.
Like Power of the Dog, there are plenty of layers that slowly reveal themselves (albeit not as slowly as the Dog). You know the general direction of the film but there are still plenty of twists and surprises. The plot is great as is the cinematography. The acting excellent.
The highlight of the film is Penelope Cruz. She is just amazing in a very challenging, emotional role. What her character goes through is incredibly traumatic.
The ending which could have been a bit naff is done beautifully. An extremely moving scene that would bring a tear to a glass eye.
9.5/10
Btw, it’s brilliant to have some high quality original screenplay films out just now. Hollywood blockbusters have their place, but nothing beats a high quality original film.

Another slow burner… Nightmare Alley
Only this one is too slow which combined with the film being so long makes for a tiring watch albeit the final half an hour is very good. It runs for 2 1/2 hours. You could easily cut out 40 mins and lose nothing from the plot. The director, who is some Hollywood big shot apparently, clearly enjoys filming more than good story telling. In fairness to him the cinematography is brilliant. But, as the saying goes… less is more.
Except in my score, less is less so a grudging 5/10.

His story telling in Pans Labyrinth (spanish speaking)is virtually unsurpassed. His movies since moving to hollywood (english language) are a major disappointment though it has to be said (even though Shape of Water won the oscar)

Lilies of the Field - I don't think I've seen a Sidney Poitier film before. He's great in this, and I'll check out In the Heat of the Night (also on iPlayer) soon. Limbo - the sort of film I wanted to like because of the important story (a Syrian refugee stuck on a remote Scottish island and awaiting his asylum request), but it was boring. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings - an enjoyable yarn. Z for Zachariah - a decent and atmospheric dystopian slow-burner where an apocalyptic event has wiped out most of the human race, starring a pre-mega-fame Margot Robbie. And I recommend Sorry We Missed you, on BBC2 tonight and iPlayer soon - www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0014blg - it's shocking what many delivery drivers in the UK put up with, and I think this was the film Ken Loach made after I, Daniel Blake.

Quo Vadis, Aida? I thought this might be a harrowing watch, and it was. A drama unfolding around the Srebrenica massacre in 1995, it’s hard to believe this could have happened in Europe in the recent past. Great performances, raises many questions (at least for me). Recommended.

Watched Belfast. I thought it was a really nothing movie tbh. Up for multi awards and I honestly can't see why. On the contrary just watched Belfast tonight and thought it was very good. The young lad Buddy played by Jude Hill was a perfect fit and is there any character that Judy Dench can’t play. A great movie with the moral message that religion was, is and will always be the root of all evil.

Yeah, I don't know, I thought I'd love it and was dying to watch it but it just felt really flat and barely a story. Little lad was very good though.
