Watched All Quiet on the Western Front remake. If you enjoyed 1917 or Dunkirk, imo this is a lot better film-making. It's beautifully shot in places, but is a relentlessly tough harrowing watch that pulls absolutely no punches throughout and is all the better for it. You're left in no doubt as to the reality of life in the first world war trenches and the humanity that still existed, often even right in the midst of acts of awful savagery. It's in German but I think you can watch with English dubbed over, or subtitles. Excellent. An absolutely excellent yet harrowing film. Without doubt the best war film I’ve ever seen but also one of the best films hands down. That first scene with the clothes making their way back to new recruits really hits it home in the first few minutes. A huge dose of reality of life at that time. Pretty decent English dubbing available too from Netflix Agreed. I thought it'd take a lot to top Saving Private Ryan for a quality, realistic and harrowing war film but All Quiet has definitely raised the bar.

I went to see ‘She Said’ on Saturday, this was focusing on the New York Times journalists who carried out their investigation on Harvey Weinstein.
It’s my film of the year, as much as many know the outcome, I found it a good watch & tense at times.
8/10

BRecently watched Once upon a Time in America, on Amazon Prime.
Almost four hours long and I thought it was stunning.
May well rewatch it in the new year.

Halloween Ends- abysmal. More teen drama than slasher
Terrifier 2- some real gore in this one, good use of practical effects. There was a decent rip on YT but it's been pulled down now, rent only
The Black Phone- decent. Captures the feel of the 70s really well

I just watched "Everything Everywhere All At Once" and I have to say what a fun movie that was. Could have maybe been a little bit shorter, but still very enjoyable. Everyone in it was excellent.

Went to see Bones & All last night, very slow and dark movie. I think it’s a marmite movie where it be enjoyed but also disliked. For me it wasn’t rubbish but not my choice of enjoyment. 5/10

Not seen the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The 2018 of Halloween was a good follow on and would have been better as a stand-alone movie. The plot for Ends just was too disjointed, but could have been ok as a copy cat spin off? I’m looking forward to the Salems Lot remake coming next year. I think that’s possibly going to be a jump scare movie?

Had a good run of form at the flicks lately…
Banshees, Living, Aftersun and Bones And All have all been excellent.
Bill Nighy in Living was superb, not his usual character by any stretch. Imagine he’ll get a BAFTA nod.
Paul Mescal is the talent of a generation.

Mulholland Drive- I usually like David Lynch's weirdness but gave up half way through here, boring as hell. Didn't even make it to the lesbian scene 😯

BRecently watched Once upon a Time in America, on Amazon Prime. Almost four hours long and I thought it was stunning. May well rewatch it in the new year. One of the best films ever. But what makes it really special is the soundtrack, composed by Ennio Morricone. I have a CD of it in my car and I love it to bits. One of those rare films I would give a 10/10. OS.

I've had a Quentin Tarantino playlist going this week. Several Ennio Morricone tracks on there including a few from Django Unchained. Never gave it much thought when it came out but the entire Kill Bill soundtrack is also becoming a new favourite

Anyone been to see the new Avatar?
I’m not sure the prices at Cineworld or Vue but the odeon in Stafford is getting way too much. I have a limitless card but for Avatar 3D isense showing £24 (inc 3D glasses). Children £16 which I find way overpriced.

That seems really expensive 100% average showing is £16 for isense at Stafford. Ironically the cinema is 4/5 years old and now wear & tear are showing on the seats. But naturally feel it is becoming to overpriced, which I can understand waiting for digital versions to come out, even though there’s no big screen experience.

'Spirited' on apple tv isn't bad after the first 20 minutes. I expect they'll make a West End/Broadway musical out of it for next year.

I haven't watched it yet but The Banshees of Inisherin is the latest film by Martin McDonagh who is responsible for great stuff like "In Bruges", "Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri", the tremendous "Seven Psychopaths" and various excellent plays, so I will be interested to know what people make of this latest offering. Just catching up with this thread so I'm a bit late with this. We went to see the Banshees a few weeks ago (on Nov 5th). Got to about 20 minutes from the end, and the picture froze. The cinema waited for something to happen but nothing did, so someone went out in to the foyer and informed a member of staff. A young lad came in and said they’d got a slight problem and were working on it. It should only be a few minutes. I, helpfully suggested, that they switch everything off and then turn it back on again. He said they had already tried something like that. Anyway – long story short – after a couple more minutes, the film restarted at a point a couple of minutes before where we’d got to. We all duly let out a little cheer (as you do) and settled down to finish the film, when it bloody froze again. In he came to say that they might not get to finish the film, but we could all wait in our seats if we wanted to, while they worked on it. He said, to general misbelief, that with it being bonfire night, it might have become too smoky outside! A couple of more false starts later, other staff came in to the cinema and said they were going to be unable to restart the films and so we’d all better bugger off. And we could pick up complimentary tickets from the desk on our way out, which everybody did. And then we got outside and, as he’d said, it was as smoky and foggy as fuck. It turned out that instead of receiving the movies by cable, they did actually beam them down from a satellite or somewhere and it was just too dense for the signal to get through – or that’s what they said anyway! I’ve never known that before. Anyway, as for the film…… I thought the first 4/5ths of if was superb. Fantastic scenery, beautiful soft Irish accents, and some gentle humour mixed in. We haven’t seen the final fifth of the film as we gave our free vouchers to one of our daughters. We’ll wait until it arrives on Amazon, or Netflix, or somewhere. So, I would very much recommend “The Banshees of Inisherin”, but don’t go on a foggy or smoky day!

Not a great film person. Is Last Night in Soho any good? Yes it is, nothing like Wright's other work though. The early parts including the time travel aspect are almost like a subtle nod to David Lynch

Watched DOWNFALL: The case against Boeing, last night on Netflix. It was an eyeopener about how corporate greed was prepared to kill hundreds of people to keep their stock market price high and bypass all safety regulations by skullduggery. I can't say I enjoyed it because of the content but it was an eye opener about how how crooks work. 1 1/2 hours but well worth a watch.
OS.
