8/10:
The Innocents - creepy 1960s horror about a governess and two children who may be possessed.
Elvis - a few too many montages but still an achievement to fit a lifetime into a 2hr30 film. Austin Butler as Elvis and Hanks as the Colonel were superb.
7/10:
Sound of Metal - drummer loses his hearing. Good film.
Bullet Train - fun and violent action comedy thriller.
Beasts of No Nation - violent Netflix film about child soldiers in an unnamed African civil war. Idris Elba was excellent as their commander.
Playtime - surreal French comedy set in a grey Paris that was way too long at 2hr30, especially given it had no plot. But there were some genius and hilarious moments.
6/10: Vox Lux - a girl becomes a pop star after a shocking incident. The first half as the girl growing into her career was very good, but the second half with Natalie Portman as a 30+ pop star not so good.

Watched this weekend a fair few films as I was lying in bed ill. So I did all these and offer Dead man’s shoes (masterpiece of a revenge thriller with always feels grounded and believable) Hunt for the red October ( 10/10 just for the wig) Moneyball ( watchable once but nothing special for a repeat) Zero dark thirty (for the thirtieth time I think) Centurion ( the warriors but set in ancient Scotland not New York) Troy ( swords and sandals at its best)

Orphan: First Kill
The prequel to Orphan (which was a seriously scary movie).
I went along with very low expectations, and was pleased to find it was a really good watch. Of course, the big reveal of the first movie, means that particularly “wtf” moment doesn’t apply here, but they still manage to insert a great twist during the film which makes the movie really work in the second half.
Well worth going to see.
7/10

Samaritan
Sylvester Stallone stars and although it's hugely predictable of good versus chaos with the baddies akin to those in the first Robo Cop it's a reasonable watch 7/10

Ye enjoyed bullet train. The last third got a bit silly but an enjoyable watch overall. Reviews extremely mixed.
I went to see Nope the week before and thought it was one of the worst films I’ve ever seen in a cinema. Went in without knowing anything about it. Checked the reviews after and 80% or so on rotten tomatoes. Apparently some political undertones that were totally lost on me. I genuinely came out of it thinking someone came up with the idea of a black guy seeing a ufo and saying “nope” in a mildly amusing (at best) manner and then worked backwards from that point. Couldn’t see how such a naff film could be made otherwise.
The disconnect between “professional” reviewers and the general public seems wider than ever. I used to use rotten tomatoes before watching a film (and would often not bother if 60% or so) but I’m realising I have probably deprived myself with that mentality. Bunch of politically tapped weirdos lost in their echo chambers.

Bullet Train's worth a watch. Ignore the pompous reviews. "Fun and violent action comedy thriller 7/10" was my review. I even thought some of the violence was necessary for the comedy element. Definitely worth seeing at the cinema. I watched The Mummy (Tom Cruise one) last night, and I'm not sure why that was so widely panned. It was far from perfect but was a fun enough romp. It's a shame it put the death knell on the Universal horror universe that was planned, as it even made a profit. Russell Crowe was out of place as Dr Jekyll, but it was the first film and that could have come in time. Javier Bardem was going to be involved which could've been great. Oh well.

X It's 1979 and a group of young people drive into Texas Roston Vasey to make an adult film. Everythings going great till Edward and Tubbs show up It's a really good spin on horror stories, it's about the old raging against the youth, really worth a watch. Great story, body horror aplenty, though with a twist that just may out you off watching adult films! 9/10

Finally got around to watching 'Don't look up'. Been putting it off as it looked boring.
Have to say I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to.
Also watched Bullet Train a few weeks back and liked that too. Thought the two brothers stole the show in that. Anyone who's given it a bad review clearly needs to do their research on what kind of movie to expect before watching it.

I struggled watch Harold Lloyd films as a kid! I was terrified watching it! A fear of heights is a good thing to have. I have it. But did manage to conquer it, or at least cope with it, when I climbed the Cuilin in Skye with the infamous Inaccessible Pinnacle. That photo is from this wonderful short film which is well worth a watch. I particularly like it because I’ve been there and done it, albeit not on a bike!

90 minutes into Tenet and despite me really paying attention I have absolutely no idea what this film is about other than the main actor died at the beginning of the film.

Wonder - the kids were great in this film about a boy with a facial disfigurement, although Owen Wilson was a bit of a weak link. A feel-good film that shows the value of being kind. 8/10
Teen Spirit - a decent film about a shy girl who dreams of becoming a singer. Elle Fanning elevated it to a better level, and what a great singing voice she has! 7/10
Roma - I loved the car parking scene near the start, and there were a couple of other good scenes (including the ended). Other than the cinematography, I don't get the big deal and large parts were boring. 6/10
The Fairy - poor French comedy that started off okay but was weird and not in a good way. 4/10

Saw Amsterdam last night. A proper story, you just have to sit, pay attention and follow it. Which it appears the critics can't.
I'm a big fan of David Washington so it's a case of take my money for anything he's in. The cast is a ridiculous line up, how they got them all together beggars belief.
I won't spoil it in case anyone else fancies it but given the media etc were wanking themselves silly over Don't Look up as to its prescience etc my take on their attitude to this is that it's a little close to home and they work for/support the modern day protagonists.
It's loosely hung around real events in the 30s and I took that it's a little bit of a morality tale, but that if we're not already deep down the rabbit hole it threatens, our feet are sticking out of the neck of the burrow.

The late 70s 80s was the era for those types of films and has that vibe

Quite enjoyed it because it was so well shot and fast moving but, like all time travel films, you can never get past the inherent paradoxes and contradictions that time travel throws up. Likewise, no idea what was really going on!

Watched All Quiet on the Western Front remake.
If you enjoyed 1917 or Dunkirk, imo this is a lot better film-making. It's beautifully shot in places, but is a relentlessly tough harrowing watch that pulls absolutely no punches throughout and is all the better for it. You're left in no doubt as to the reality of life in the first world war trenches and the humanity that still existed, often even right in the midst of acts of awful savagery.
It's in German but I think you can watch with English dubbed over, or subtitles.
Excellent.

I watched it all the way through and couldn’t understand what the hell happened. Not widely promoted but a great film i’ve seen a couple of times was “Foxcatcher” based on a true story and fantastic acting particularly from the leads. Well worth a watch.

On Tenet, I think Christopher Nolan needs someone to reign in his Nolanisms a bit, similar to Tarantino and his Tarantino-isms at times.
Me recently:
8/10: Brain on Fire: follows a young woman at her newspaper job as she starts to lose her mind and doesn't know why. Based on a true (and important) story.
7/10: Black Adam: some good moments and eventually built to a conclusion I enjoyed a lot. Sets up the next DC film in the series well.
The Woman King: good enough action film with some good fight sequences, and although these things are always dramatised, it's good to learn about what was a completely unknown part of African history to me.
6/10: Ma Rainey's Black Bottom: I think this may have been Chadwick Boseman's last film. I thought it was going to be more like a biopic of Ma Rainey in the 1920s (did you know black women were the top-selling blues musicians but were written out of history?), but it was largely set in a recording studio and about her backing band for the day. Kind of boring overall, and I didn't see the conclusion coming (in a bad way like perhaps the foreshadowing wasn't enough). Viola Davis was great as Ma Rainey.
The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared: started off well but in the end an average comedy kind of mild-thriller following the old guy and his escapades.

Without doubt the best war film I’ve ever seen but also one of the best films hands down. That first scene with the clothes making their way back to new recruits really hits it home in the first few minutes. A huge dose of reality of life at that time. Pretty decent English dubbing available too from Netflix

I haven't watched it yet but The Banshees of Inisherin is the latest film by Martin McDonagh who is responsible for great stuff like "In Bruges", "Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri", the tremendous "Seven Psychopaths" and various excellent plays, so I will be interested to know what people make of this latest offering.
