Imagine making your test debut at Lords and instead of talking about how delighted you are to claim your first test scalps you have to explain tweets you sent nearly a decade ago.

Yeah maybe he should have deleted the comments but how is it a story? Ben Stokes had videos of himself literally imitating disabled kids and it didn't make a headline on his debut. Let him have his moment. He was brilliant today.

This country’s media cannot wait to destroy a young persons career. An utter disgrace! I’ve played club cricket for many years and the insults that fly between the English and Asians and Caribbean’s are something else. The guys that play the game know it makes us all together because it’s “humour”. Something that’s well and truly lost in today’s world of fragile snowflakes!

Anyway can we keep this shit off the cricket thread? It’s about appreciation of the game and there some great analysis on here, Let’s not ruin it with social media guff 😀

I'm pretty sure the average banter in the dressing room at your average club in the Warwickshire or Staffordshire leagues is far far more offensive. In fact, I can confirm it is. This is utterly pathetic. No doubt the poor bloke will get his fair share of death threats tonight as will his family. It was a mistake, he was a kid, let it go. I genuinely think the ECB might sack him over this. Tragic.

Some very good players, but, maybe more importantly, a very well balanced side. The bowling has great variety, their top order batting a good mix of left and right handlers. Quite a nuanced debate to be had on this.
Firstly the timing of the release of these from the media, in my opinion, is extremely poor and borderline nasty. He is still a young man and these tweets won't define his life but the day of making your international test debut would have been his defining moment and that has now been ruined.
The timing says more about shock-journalists, shock-factor and maximum impact, more-so than highlighting some pretty disgusting tweets of 8 or so years ago. We're just fortunate an ex one isn't running the country.
Secondly, Robinson has spoken excellently under difficult circumstances and has expressed his own embarrassment and shame at what were some pretty vile tweets, so for those brushing it off as guff, or nonsense he has now apologised for what he himself describes as 'inexcusable' tweets. For me, coupled with wearing his anti-discrimination top today would be enough to see him as a genuine lad who has matured and I cannot see it being an issue any longer.
Hopefully, he has some good people around him tonight and he comes back hard in the morning.

All of their batsmen average over 40 with Watling and de Grandhomme averaging just under 40. With Santner and Jamieson at 8 and 9 their lower order are capable of doing some serious damage. Their bowling attack perhaps lacks a bit of pace but there’s certainly plenty of variety there. I don’t think I’m mentally prepared to watch Neil Wagner pick up 3-4 wickets with his medium paced bouncers.

Ollie Robinson - is this really it? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The tweets, in one of which he wrote that “my new muslim friend is the bomb” and in another that “a lot of girls need to learn the art of class”, were all posted between April 2012 and June 2013. In a third he wrote that “females who play video games actually tend to have more sex than the girls who don’t”. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The 'bomb' one is a bit left field but girls who play video games having more sex? Who knows, I think it's true but without a study we'll never know. As for the 'art of class', well there are some seriously rough birds where he grew up in Margate I promise you that much

This really is disturbing stuff from the media. You could pull up comments that any of us, and I literally mean any one of us regardless of political stance, background or ethnicity, made when we were 18/19 and we'd think "yeah maybe shouldn't have said that" or "yeah maybe shouldn't have done that".
The high horse, politically correct culture of the mainstream media elites and social media is the work of the devil.
I bet if you went back to so many premier league footballers at 18 and saw/heard what they'd said in the dressing room or in the pub with mates, it would be as bad, if not worse than this.
He genuinely runs the risk of having his entire England career cancelled off the back of these posts which is just beyond words.

It’s fair to say we need to pick up at least three wickets this morning to stay in the game. If New Zealand get through the morning session relatively unscathed they’ll be declaring this evening with 500 runs on the board.
I fear it’s going to be another long day in the field for us.

Interesting article in the Telegraph today... England's day of toil on flat Lord's pitch could provide valuable Ashes lessonsIt says England were hoping for a flat wicket rather than a green top as part of their preparation and development for the upcoming Ashes. Which is what they got. If that is the case, it’s a shame no one told the people picking the side for this test! The point made in the article is that the sum of our bowling attack is less than the sum of its parts - interestingly the opposite to my assessment of the NZ side (above!). The argument is three 80+ mph right arm quicks is one too many if the wicket is dead. So we shouldn’t have gone with Anderson, Broad and Robinson. I suspect they felt, after Broad’s petulance last year, they felt obliged to play him and Saint Jimmy but also wanted to give an outing to the stand out bowler of this season, Robinson. As ever, our selection is muddled leading to a team that is less than the sum of its parts.

Lords has been a seam bowlers paradise over the past couple of years but this wicket is incredibly flat. It may sound pessimistic but I honestly don’t believe we’ve got a cat in hell’s chance of winning the Ashes so all of this ‘preparation’ is meaningless. If we prepare pitches like this one all through the Summer we’ll almost certainly end up losing both this series and the India series.

If we prepare pitches like this one all through the Summer we’ll almost certainly end up losing both this series and the India series. I think we have more chances of winning the Ashes down under this winter coming than either of this summer’s home series. Both New Zealand and India are much better than us not just, for the most part, in man on man comparisons but emphatically as a team... back to that sum of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts. Australia are more like us, some talented individuals but too many who are unreliable and inconsistent and some who, frankly, just haven’t got what it takes. Their bowling is their strength, but ours could match them if we have our bona fide quicks firing (and our captain figures out how to use them... he over bowled Wood yesterday as he frequently has done with Archer). Their batting is miserable, even worse than ours. The reality is that currently the apex of international cricket, The Ashes, is not the pinnacle of performance. It’s distinctly second rate behind NZ and India just now. Both are worthy contestants in the upcoming test cricket final at Lords.

Great period for England... 4 wickets (so far) for 6 runs. 3 for Wood, 1 for Robinson.
