Today, April 8, sees the start of the first class domestic cricket season with the opening round of county championship games. So, I guess, now is maybe an appropriate time to transfer our cricket musings away from the winter thread to a summer one. The BBC have done a helpful feature that is worth a read; 2021 County Championship: What to look out for as competition returns after hiatus in 2020 describing the new format of the tournament as well as some players to look out for... seems we may have some more options for the opening positions which could be good news. Mind you, I don’t envy our cricketers fielding today wherever they are playing. It’s going to feel quite chilly standing around trying to keep your hands warm.

I've already booked off the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May, for Lancs v Yorks at Old Trafford. Hopefully by then, restrictions will have lifted and i'll be able to get down for a few days, a few pints and some sunshine.

I can imagine one or two batsmen today prodding at a wide ball and as soon as they hear even the most half hearted appeal being back in the nice warm dressing room before the umpire has chance to say "not out".

Good big hundred for Sam Robson, could he yet get back into the England fold?

Robson and Vince knocking on the door, they can't do anymore than put regular big scores on the card......

Robson and Vince knocking on the door, they can't do anymore than put regular big scores on the card...... I was amazed to discover just that Robson is older than Vince! Both into their 30’s now, do we think the management will be looking at younger prospects? We definitely need to strengthen the top order, still🙄

Might be worth keeping an eye on them over the coming weeks.

Lammonby had not really opened before last season, 3 centuries in his first 6 games including becoming youngest somerset opener to carry his bat, if he makes a couple of tons this year he'll be going to the ashes, longer term he's middle order batsman as somerset rate his bowling quite highly.

Not sure if it belongs here and not everyone's cup of tea but the roller coaster of the IPL starts tomorrow. Sunrisers look the bet to me with Kumar and Rashid Khan bowling and a combo of Williamson, Roy, Barstow and Warner batting up the order.
13-2 to win it.*
*The value of my tips occasionally go up rather than continually down!

Great to see Liam Dawson back from his achilles injury and he's currently 150*. He's the missing link in our one day teams as a spin replacement for Moeen who can comfortably bat 7......

First IPL game just finished, and it was a cracker. RCB winning of the last ball.
The only downer is that means Kohli wins a game, but the consolation was Kohli spilling (yet another) catch but this time the ball hit him leaving him with a nice looking bump on the side of his face.
I am not a fan of Kohli the man.
He’s a great bat though, although the highlight of today’s game was a blast from the past from ABdV.

Nice to see Jonny Bairstow scoring a 50 for Sunrisers Hyderabad yesterday albeit in a losing cause against Eoin Morgan’s KKR.
SRH have a bit of a problem on their hands though... which saw Kane Williamson not included yesterday. It seems they only have space for two overseas batsmen noting they will most often play Rashid Khan (brilliant spinner) and Jason Holder (top class all rounder). They have 4 options... Bairstow, Williamson, Roy and, their captain, Warner.
I wonder how long before they switch captain from Warner to Williamson.
Because Warner looks pretty poor these days.
(Current ICC rankings have Bairstow at 14, Roy at 24, Williamson at 33 and Warner at 45 heading south).

You may be interested to know that the Lesser Spotted Woakes will be on show today.
After months of inaction, he is playing today for DC against RR.
Btw - Ben Stokes will no longer feature for RR this season as he broke a finger in that first game. Shame for him.

He should have featured at some point over the winter IMO.

Poor Tom Curran. The Go To bowler you don't want to go to! If he’s wearing a head scarf to detract from his terrible bowling it’s not working! Yet he did really well last season, he’s just been found out. Shades of Dernbach

Stokes out for 12 weeks and will miss the New Zealand 2 match test series. Disrupts the balance of the team so i would imagine we’ll go for a traditional line up with 6 batters a wicket keeper and 4 bowlers:
Sibley Burns Crawley Root Lawrence Pope Buttler/Foakes Woakes Archer Leach Broad/Anderson
