Forgot to post this on my return but two weekends ago I was golfing in duffield derbyshire at Chevin golf club. Walking off the 11th its a wooded area and as we walked what can only have been a golden oriole flew out of the canopy. Not having seen one before I looked up sightings in Derbyshire when i got to the clubhouse. Apparently the last one was in 2022! Beautiful creature, i was tempted to abandon the golf and just look for it again. I was losing anyway location (no sign of the bird!)

My lads got 2 hen harriers nests with 4 chicks in each and growing up fast, I'll upload photos of the ugly little chicks once they've fledged. It's the most theyve had in many years. He showed Conrad Dickinson (explorer extraordinaire) around the reserve a couple of weeks ago, and he sent him a message after giving him a big well done and offered to give a reference for any future job applications. www.conraddickinson.com/expeditions

The Hen Harrier chicks have fledged now so I can post the photos, 2 successful nests with 4 chicks each this year. Hopefully they will grow to become breeding age themselves and not succumb to the devious tactics from the nearby grouse moors.

What a marvellous job he is doing.

This is my first ever photo of the cuckoo. Just a pity it was so far away for my humble camera with loads of vegetation in the way.

Write up by the BBC on my lads Hen Harrier project, he doesn't get mentioned in name, such a shame his contract runs out in November and there's no more funding atm, and he's looking for another job again. We can find billions to house illegal immigrants and send billions abroad, but our own endangered wildlife has to be funded as a charity. www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c07e4xyzvppo.amp

Applause once again on the work he has done. As you know i volunteer at RSPB Middleton Lakes. Was there yesterday. We have been having a fundraiser every so often. More frequently recently. They are paid by the rspb but dont work directly for our reserve. The Girl was telling me a few weeks ago the RSPB are 1 million in deficit. External auditors are apparently coming in. They will be looking at reserves to see which will gain funding and which will have funding cut. Luckily for our reserve they have taken that much off us that we don't have much they can take. We lost Grace our Visitor experience office because they had no more funding for her. I don't know how we would operate if people like me didn't give up there weekends to work. Jake our warden works all the hours he can. So us helping fill rotas at least gives him a rest. Hence i don't go Stoke anymore. I do it like Northys lad because of our passion to save wildlife. Like any organization i wonder how many managers the RSPB employs that are on nice wages 🤔 Im not talking your reserve managers they are very much needed. Im talking people at say HQ. I appreciate lots of things now need extra funding. I just wish nature could be thought about a bit more. There is some things that has money wasted on it. I dont think nature is one of those. Yes the RSPB is a charity i just wish it got more backing. It does need to be spent in the right way though they cant get funding and then miss manage it. Employing Northys lad and the work he has done for species like Hen Harrier. That for me is spending in the right way. Christ we could loose hen harriers all together if we are not careful. I just hope the RSPB can navigate these difficult times.

Cracking experience yesterday rolling down the valley on the footplate of the engine. Just sitting on two consecutive fence post were a couple of buzzards, didn't flinch or move until we'd gone past. Not as big as the kites but impressive nonetheless.

…. surely if it’s the RSPB can’t you lobby (no soup involved) HRH for funds? Or has that all gone on sustainable clothing produced at Sandringham? Did see the exhibition when I was there in August. On the bird front we had an adult male Cassowary and two young stripey chicks come through our yard the other day
