Apparently, the profusion of berries on many of our trees signals that we are heading for a 'waxwing winter' with many of these northern based birds heading south to the UK to take advantage. Quite attractive chaps with a Trump-esque hairdo! Looking forward to AlsagerStokie capturing a few images hopefully.

Missed an incredible opportunity a couple of days ago. Casually watching the tide coming in from the jetty and a cormorant broke the water wrestling a dirty great big eel. Disappeared briefly and resurfaced with it wrapped around its neck. This continued for 2-3 minutes ending with a big gulp and swallow for the bird. Fascinating stuff. Place called bird rock not far from here with the largest inland breeding site for cormorants in the UK.

I called into Fenton today before the match at the last reported sightings of the Waxwings, and was rewarded with seeing 3 of them sat in trees next to a few Rowan trees. A few guys with super huge cameras and lenses there as well.

Buzzard coming in to land. Pity the cameras mist up so much this time of year. Attachment Deleted

Thats the latest i heard. 2 Whooper Swans still Winsford Bottom Flash (I think both are rehabilitated birds), no sign of any Waxwings Salterswall area this am. That was 4th Jan. Not been posted in Cheshire Wildlife since. Do you want adding to the Watsaap group Northy? Its Cheshire Birds and Wildlife. You wont get hoards of message. As they try stick it to just sightings

Was at Belfasts RSPB site on the lough earlier, plenty of oystercatchers feeding on the grassed areas next to the road, on the way out we stopped and another car coming the other way also stopped as one walked across the road

I don't do photos but I do love wild birds. During cold weather spells, my first job every morning is boil a kettle of water and thaw the drinking places in my backyard. I then top up all the bird feeders and put out sultanas for the blackbirds. I have a beautiful robin that lives in a thick fir tree. He gets special treatment. I've built him a special feeder that the larger birds can't get to and I keep that topped up with special robin seed. I also keep all my toilet roll and paper towel cartons, cover them in peanut butter, smother them in a special wild bird mix I've made and then hang them up. The tits and sparrows love them, as they do with the kibbled peanuts I keep topped up. For the larger birds, wood pigeons etc, I feed them a corn based mix. (They're stupid birds... always falling out over one place when there are about 4 places I scatter them.) In really cold spells, I must spend about 10/15 quid a week to keep them going. But the reward of seeing them surviving is well worth it.
Keep the photos coming guys. I love them.
OS.

My lad attended a talk in Penrith on Saturday on Ring Ouzels, they are coming back to the reserve he works on.
First hen Harrier and Curlew nests started, 1 of each at the moment.
The RSPB up there tried to buy some adjacent land to the reserve but lost out to the nearby grouse reserve, so they can expect more raptor persecutions and nest disturbances.

Had a Goldcrest in the garden yesterday, only 2nd time I've seen one. Got a little video of it on the phone but it wont load on here. I was walking along the canal path by Malkins Bank golf course last week and there was one in a tree an arms length from me. I stopped and it continued hopping around for ages but didn't dare go for my phone in my pocket. Love the facial expression, always look a bit angry. I also saw a bullfinch in much the same location recently, probably before not long before Christmas, and haven't seen one of them for years.

Had started to see a few bullys about around where we are over the last few years, but not seen any this winter. Spotted a greenfinch on Sunday morning in the hedges on the lanes behind us, first one in a fair while.
