Managed catch the kestrel the other day. Think the kestrels are sitting on eggs at the minute, only swapping over when he brings food for her. The barn owls are using the box again, although there are no signs she's sitting when checking with the thermal image camera. This might just be because of a build up of debris in the bottom of the box. There's no signs at all that the tawny owls are using their box this year which I find a bit strange.

My lad was on BBC Look North and ITV Borders on Monday night, him and a rural crimes policeman being interviewed about the work they (RSPB and police) do to protect the Hen harrier nest sites.

Just managed catch the moment before the Kestrel had words with the Barn owl. Very misty up there this morning which was a pity.

Now here’s one for the experts.
Lay in bed listening to various birds early AM and heard what I can only describe as a Brrrrr Drrrrr sounding bird, nothing we’ve heard before. Googled it but for the life of me can’t seem to find what bird it was.

It’s something we haven’t heard before, probably why it got my attention at 5.15 this morning. Sounded like a drill

No mate proper loud, stood out above the morning chorus we have, we’ve put loads of feeders out and it’s fantastic hearing each morning.

The Housemartins are back in numbers I've got about 13 nests being built multiple occupancy in 8 eaves and the garage eaves. This morning was especially busy I think lots of insects off the field and lots of mud being ferried about. It's an amazing sight. I reckon I have about 50 adults bombing about this year already.

I’ve had a mare hand cutting our hedges this afternoon a/ leaving the flowers in place as they turn into berries for the birds b/ Clematis/Magnificent roses growing in the hedges so trying not to cut the stems and there’s a blackbird nesting in the hedges.
Just filled up our feeders for tomorrow’s early birds

Probably not, but it's a good place to pass through.....If you're heading towards Yorkshire, N Wales, Southern Scotland We caught the Long Eared Owl on one of our cameras a few years back, only the once in twenty odd years, so it's not impossible. Other than that can't think of anything else at the minute.

Hanchurch woods is good for Nightjar.
Here lots of Cuckoo in places. Had one today when i went to Wixall to try and get Hobbies. Sadly they were too distant. Plenty of Dragonflies around today though.
Short Eared Owls on nests up the moors not far from Mermaid Inn.

I was walking through Hanchurch Woods one day with the dogs and there was an old fallen tree alongside the footpath. Just as I got to it (I was looking in the right place) a nightjar suddenly took flight. It was amazing. It was laid flat on the tree trunk and was camouflaged better than a SAS bod decked in camo. I've heard quite a few in my time and love their sound but that was the only time I've ever seen one.
OS.
