Have we had any offers for Powell? Any reports of interest in him? Edit: just seen the Newcastle story a few pages back.

Would be really disappointed to see Powell leave he’s a such an asset. When he plays well it makes the rest of the team play well. He puts it about too, gets stuck in, winds the bastards up. I love it. I agree with others that we’re not in a position to turn down good cash but that figure is over 10m. I think we could live without him next season but it makes us much more one dimensional - down the wings and cross it in. I don’t mind this and think it could improve us as a unit but it would still be a shame. I don't see how making ourselves more one dimensional is a good thing at all?

The one player we cannot sell right now. We have a full squad of "will never play for Stoke again", or probably a midfielder or two too many. We even have 3 decent goal keepers. What we dont have is anyone else who knows how to score a goal or unpick a defence.

If we get say £7-8M for Powell and he really wants to go, can we turn it down? Who would we get for that money who is as good as powell? Probably no one, but if he wants to go it's often better to cash in when you can?

We need to get Powell tied down to a new contract ASAP. So that we either get enough compensation so we can try to replace him or he takes us to the Premier League.

I agree it sounds odd but I sometimes think that was one of the reasons for our success under Tony. One dimensional generally means you have a set of players that fit specific positions rather than being in the position we are sometimes where our squad is thin on certain positions of roles. The whole club can align to the tactics. The scouts know they’re looking for a player in the Mama role as an example. Finally on the pitch there’s no ambiguity and you can really focus at excelling at what you do. There are obvious flip sides to this and nearly all away games in 08/09 point to this.

My concern is his injury, if it gets worse or happens again after tomorrow then we are another forward down.

Fuller was the extra dimension though. He was a wild card that made the whole thing work. Then there was the brief spell without him where Jones was in form and his partnership with Walters, plus two proper wingers, again allowed us to really stretch teams in more than one way. When we were just completely one dimensional was towards the end when he’d stripped the pace out of the side and teams could just double up on the forward players. The goals dried up.

He should have been prepared for the question how he knew Powell was going by saying "I heard it from my next door neighbour who is best mates with that taxi driver who delivers Tony scholes's pizzas during the last hour of the transfer window." He slippeed up there. OS.

If Powell does go, with Campbell out for the season and Fletcher not 100% Mid table beckons I'm afraid.
You just know if Powell does leave, it will happen too late for us to bring a replacement in.

That makes it all the more likely that he won't leave. I never understand why clubs who want to buy a player often leave their bid until late in the window. It works if the club is desperate to get rid but if the club is not desperate to sell that player then they are less likely to sell him if they have no time to bring in a replacement. Clarke is an excellent replacement for Ince (albeit only on loan) so you can see why we would sell him tomorrow if a bid came in, but we have no chance of getting a replacement for Powell so I'd expect we would keep him however good the bid.

Rational thinking Lakeland, however this is Stoke!!. I get the impression from Powell that he is enjoying his football at the moment and seems happy here. The striker situation does worry me, Fletcher clearly has fitness issues, Gregory is probably a good few weeks from being involved, Vokes, is well Vokes and Brown not really a striker. All a bit worrying with 19 games left and us needing results 😊☹️

The reason he came to Stoke was to be back near his family in Haslington. One of my mates is big mates with him from his Sandbach school days. Personally I can't see him going.

I’m also distantly linked to him and apparently he’s not interested in moving from the area. Crewe, MUFC, Wigan and Stoke. He’s never gone far. I don’t think he’s leaving, and that’s a good thing. We need to build the team around him.
