I've been keeping a close eye on this thread, but to date have stopped short of posting.
I'm in my mid 30's and have been a heavy drinker since from the age of 18. I'm one of them who has no stop button and always wants to have one more.
Knowing I have a problem, I've previously been to ASIST (something like that anyway- it was years ago- alcohol and substance abuse in stoke) as well as one session of AA (I thought i had problems until I heard some of their stories)
Over the last 12 years I've done two periods of 7 weeks where I've been completely off it and one of 12 weeks.
I'm not posting this for people to feel sorry for me (I've got a young family- two children who I adore and they adore me- hopefully- and hold down a good job).
My point is- if I can do 7 or 12 weeks off anyone can- I genuinely believe that!!!
Take care gents- and the best of luck!!!!

I’ve never had a drinking problem however I’ve been enjoying nights out getting hammered from 18-30ish
as I staring having kids the regular nights out were relegated to odd nights out and the football. This coincided with starting to drink at home on weekends only. Now progressively over the last 5 years as I do more physical exercise and want to get better I’ve pretty much knocked it on the head bar the very odd night out or night in with friends. I very rarely drink at home without friends. A Friday bottle of wine on the rare occasion I’m not cycling on a Saturday is about it.
It’s not been a concious thought descision more the byproduct of other stuff I do with my life.

This thread is about cutting down on alcohol so I’m assuming people are drinking a bit more than they would like without being full blown alcoholics
Unless you become an alcoholic and dependent on alcohol I’d imagine it’s just the case of breaking habits like anything else in life. Never easy but achievable
I’m not a big fan of New Years resolutions.
If you wake up on new year and say I’m going to lose weight exercise more gove up fags and booze you will fail. It’s too much.
It’s all about small changes. If you wake up and say I want to do more exercise you may find as you get fitter you will unconsciously make smaller changes like better diet, cut down on drink etc because you are enjoying your exercise and are seeing results not just in fitness but well being.
Find somthing else to do with the time when you’d normally drink, no drink in the house and only drink when out. Make new habits
Again never easy

Like I said earlier you’ve got to be able to feel the benefits of whatever it is you’re trying to do. When this happens the balance tips in your favour. Whether it’s a healthier diet, smoking, alcohol or exercise it doesn’t really matter. When you know, for example, that if you don’t drink, you’ll have a better sleep, feel and perform better at work than when you do drink, that’s when you will actively avoid it, break the habit and it’ll become much less of an issue in your day to day life.

You know you're dependant ,refuse to accept it, think others don't notice when of course they do and by which time the damage is done. Accepting and admitting you've got a problem is the easy bit doing something about it is as you say not easy. I just lied to myself and thought my drinking was an extension of having a few beers with mates after hockey matches, how wrong. It's different for everyone and good luck to everyone in meeting your objectives.

Covid + isolation has got to me. Working from home is proper shit and I haven't been able to exercise properly so a pint or a glass at night is the thing to look forwards to most days. Anyone found ways around that?
Discovering Clausthaler has made a big difference though, I've switched about half my beer shop to that but it's the only low-alcohol brand I've found that I like.

Well I’ve been for drinks and I have to say I didn’t really enjoy it😬 What the hell is happening to me? I’m already home with the heating on watching Chelsea getting roasted 👀 My first time drinking after a a few weeks can be a struggle - can almost taste/feel the toxicity of it. The following day is usually much better. You were right. The beer went down far better today👍🏻 But, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, I’m really looking forward to not drinking until next Saturday😬. How I felt this Morning although nothing major, just a bit of a headache and dehydration, made me realise I felt a lot better in the week than I thought. I’ve never been one to suffer too much from hangovers and I think that’s one of the issues, I’ve always just got on with it the following day and shaken it off. But now I’m realising there was nothing to shake off last week🤷🏻♂️. See how it pans out.....

I have very recently made some changes to help, I can't remember a day in the last few years when I havn't had a drink, and my first day without alcohol was last Tuesday!! I then did Wednesday and Thursday, quite a strange feeling to be honest. I am not really sociable, I would prefer to drink at home, normally a few cans of beer to take the edge off then a bottle maybe bottle and a half of red. Never falling over drunk just a dependency that is always there, a habit. Anyway I am now trying to be out doing something at the time I would start drinking, ie from around 5:30pm during the weekdays. I am not having any drink in the house at all. If I fancy a drink on the weekend then no problem, I will go and buy it but not too much or else I have a surplus!! Anyway, good luck to anyone in the same boat.

I am 100 times worse when drinking or the morning after, hence my decision. Maybe we could start a metal health thread (maybe there is one? I am not on here that much I'm depressed enough!!) I think some people would find it easier talking about stuff to strangers on a forum than to their friends or family, I know I do.

Nearly 2 months into my cutting down experiment and not sure it’s worth the hangovers. My god, my head was splitting on Saturday. Never really had them before when I was just topping up!

Good and bad news today. I went to the local (with Mrs) today and had a couple of pints😟. Good news is I managed to get work from talking to somebody in there. The good outweighs the bad there I’d say, back on the wagon tomorrow😬. (I’m blaming the Mrs)

When I have 3-4 weeks off I break the fast with a few quiet pints as its generally an anticlimax. The have a bigger night the next day. Like you say its probably being conscious of things (bloating, dehydrating, mild headache) you take for granted when you're drinking regularly. Having a break in the week also makes it easier to skip out the odd weekend for a longer rest from it.

Thanks for the thought but I can't get on the CBD because apparently it can trip the work drug tests. My girlfriend gave me a kombucha SCOBY because she's from California so I've started home brewing. Throw in some ginger or lime and get the secondary fermentation right and it's got a bit of character to it. Swapped alcohol for one of her kombuchas last night and it just about scratched the itch.
