I used a nicorette inhalator, for a lot longer than the recommended time but I'm still alive somehow it was a bit like a dummy in the end, there was little to no nicotine in it most of the time. Lots of ways, I'd go with hypnotherapy on the phone cos it's easy, cheap and I'd feel like I've handed responsibility to someone else for a while I know a guy who tried everything and eventually quit using hypnotherapy. Mad int it! I tried hypnotherapy in about the early 1990s, Badge, and, as the chap promised, it stopped me smoking. For two hours, because that's how long the session was. I lit up again as soon as I left and got in the car.

Day one of no booze today and right on cue I’ve had a text off my mate who I’ve not seen for ages asking if I’d like to go for a couple on Wednesday🙄. What would I do? The original plan was zero beer Monday to Friday and cut weekend consumption in half. Plan B was only drink when out and zero when at home no matter what day it was. Plan A or Plan B?🤔 Of course I could meet him and not drink but I think that’s out of the question😬 I'd have a different approach to Murphatron and not go on Wednesday at all but maybe try and meet your mate at the weekend therefore killing 2 birds with 1 stone. If you explain the situation to them, I'm sure they'll understand. The liver needs a few days on the trot without alcohol to recover and repair itself so Mon - Fri without is better IMHO than '2 days off 1 day' on or whatever. Great effort for starting today though - I think you should post your progress so that we can all spy on you for motivation. I agree, Orbsy, your suggestion is a far better option.

Im giving up drinking alcohol for a year Sorry, bad punctuation. I’m giving up. Drinking alcohol for a year 😁 Yeah. Good one, Clay. That's a bit like that last line from a song: "The party's over, it's all over, my friend........" This should of course be: "The party's over. - It's all over my friend."

I’ve decided I’m saying no to Wednesday. He says I’m a tosser but in fairness he does dry January every year and I never hassle him. We are meeting at the cricket on Saturday instead. It best be bloody Sunny!!! Yes, Orbs's idea was a much better option, Badge. And think how ready you'll be for a drink by then after a week off!

On a similar note. Anyone who’s given up fags how did you do I’m really struggling Afraid this won't help you at all, Bats, but I literally just stopped taking them out of the packet and lighting them. I couldn't believe how easy it was, because prior to that all timings were based on when I could have the next one, as they were a permanent craving, and doing sth like an Atlantic flight was torture at its worst, especially when you also tag on check-in times first and then Customs clearance, etc., at the destination. Mr Surf has never smoked and is even more gobsmacked than I am that I managed to give it up. But I'm certainly not anti as far as others are concerned - I think Badge has said the same thing.

Yep alcohol free still. It’s been ok, I’d be lying if I said I haven’t fancied one though! Im finding I’m going to bed earlier and getting up earlier and feel a bit better generally. I’ll certainly be ready for one Saturday!

Day 12 6528 calories and £225 So your previous budget on alcohol was nearly £20 a day on average? Do you realise just how pissed you could get if you spent that in Lidl? Very well done btw

In the average week that break is only 5 days but still find that helps, and if I skip the odd weekend or 2 even better. As we go into potentially the most depressing winter in many people's lifetimes we'd be advised to be mindful of our drinking. I'm not going to deny myself booze fuelled social opportunities (whether in the pub or over zoom), but will actively cut out unnecessary drinking. So a few pints this afternoon will be welcome, then that's it for the week.

That's quality news Badge - well done. I had 4 pints last night and a curry having not drunk for 10 days. Really enjoyed it. If you are getting out of the daily routine of drinking then you're half way there I reckon. Plus you're feeling the benefits in terms of sleeping and feeling better during the day. Needless to say you've saved a few quid too.

Day 14 off the ale for me. I don’t even feel like having a beer. In fact I’d probably be disappointed if I did.
I have got something to celebrate today, so might sample a few later then carry on not drinking just for the sake of it 👍

I'm by no means any sort of authority on the subject but the advice I was given in hospital after the cardiac episode was to abstain completely. Because I'd been off the booze for a long time prior and the system was effectively weaned off the alcohol reintroduction quickly which is what I did induced the 'shock to the system' my body reacted badly. Basically I'm now just shit scared of going anywhere near a drink again the risk is too big. I really loved my beer and red wine.

Well in lads.
I was mid 20s when I realised I'd drank almost every night for several years. No big horror story of addiction, just liked it too much and got into bad habits.
Decided then to only drink when I was off work the next day, which is absolutely plenty, and have largely stuck to that for about 15 years. Also have a few weeks off a few times a year, generally when trying to get fit. Definitely enjoy it more when I am drinking, and the way I was heading wasn't healthy.
Fair play to anyone trying to get the balance right.

The following day is usually much better.
