No matter where your views stand on James McClean, something that cannot be argued, is that he is nowhere near good enough as a footballer to be worth all the ridiculous baggage he brings with him. I don't see him as carrying any baggage that concerns me whatsoever. Seems to get on well with everyone on the team, works undeniably hard and has had a good relationship with all of our managers. If your idea of 'baggage' is a few weapons on the oatcake not liking him then somehow I can look past that. Couldn't have put it better ..

He's basically just shat on any moral high ground and widespread understanding that he had amongst most reasonable people. This is all grist to the mill for Billy from Barnsley, Harry from Huddersfield and all the other boneheads who will now feel fully justified in their previous actions. He's a fucking idiot. Or maybe he thought he’d make fun of himself and also have a dig at those who dish out shite to him. I didn’t find it particularly funny but that doesn’t make it offensive. Just suggests he’s a better footballer than comedian. From another perspective social isolation is affecting us all and maybe his filter isn’t working quite as it should. I don’t think there was anything malicious in his post. It was just, IMO, a poorly judged joke.

Aye, just seen. Deleting his instagram and fined two weeks wages. Seems quite reasonable really, the joke was in poor taste. The kids inclusion was what made it hard to defend imo. Nothing but a quiet word was needed, it was nothing that a few idiots have gone overboard with.

Just when the fans start to warm to his efforts he pulls a stunt like that. I agree with above, infront of the kids is not very good.

It doesn't particularly offend me, it would be the sort of thing if I was his mate and he sent it to me in a PRIVATE chat might have raised a giggle but come on a public networking site?!. To me I don't actually think he is that stupid...... which in many ways of course is much, much worse.

They wanted to protect their player from prejudice, what he's done has just thrown that support right back at their faces.

And I’ve listened to a couple of interviews with him (including one where he talks about autism and his daughter) where he sounds far from stupid. I think it was just a poorly judged attempt at humour which had the potential to be quite funny but maybe stepped over a line by including his kids.

I've been pleasantly surprised how James had won over the vast majority of Stokies and especially this season when people have begun to see his 'roll up the sleeves' attitude - which has always been paramount to his game - has been so important to our improvement since MoN came in. As a proud Irishman too, I usually mostly agree with his political sentiment, albeit not necessarily how he often goes about it.
However, This was just stupid. It's almost as if in a moment of boredom (coupled with the fact that he's been out of the limelight with injury) he's craved attention which has horribly backfired. It's right that he's been fined by the club and deleted his twit account. Hopefully when football eventually returns, this will be just another forgotten footnote in this current crisis.

I agree to a degree, probably a great gag/bit of satire with trusted friends, family and colleagues. On a public social network platform though?! Dumb as fuck is being kind! Yes he has certainly type cast himself as the proverbial Paddy! And the paddy quote just shows what a racist you are

McClean "I need to be respected and stop having vile verbal abuse aimed at me, the football league need to support me and act on these idiots who throw abuse at me racially". Stoke City. "We will support James and not tolerate any form of abuse" Fans "We had McClean wrong we will give our full backing to him". McClean "F@ k this let's take the piss out of coronavirus what shall I do I know I'll get my paramilitary balaclava out and pretend I'm teaching the kids". Why would a professional footballer own paramilitary balaclava. The man is a twat we'd be better off without him.

Didn't the board force him to delete his twitter account a year ago and fined him two weeks wages then? I think it's an over reaction, but, if he's supposed to have learned from the last disciplinary measure, why dish out the same disciplinary action? Will he be forced to delete his Oatcake account next time he steps a little out of line...

Momo is right though because his Instagram whatever is DIRECTLY linked to the club, most people would be outright sacked for such a thing especially in such a high profile position. He's an idiot for doing this, wrecked shit for himself for no reason after winning some people around

Oddly if his kids hadn’t actually been in shot I think I’d have definitely found it funny. Them being in it just makes me uncomfortable. I know I sound like a tart but it’s true. As far as black humour and taking the piss out of yourself goes it’s a cracker though.

We really don't need McClean as results prior to the shut down shows. I can still remember his ear cupping shit after the tap in against against Luton. His crossing is absolutely shit but worst than all that he brings divisive politics into our club and for such a wank footballer that is unacceptable. The sooner we fuck him off the better.
