A pal of mine bought commercial office space which had been repossessed by the bank a couple of years ago near where it will come out in Birmingham. He has already sold a couple of floors and redeemed his money in full so the floors he lets out are pure profit sitting in his pension fund so largely net of tax. Now it is going ahead for sure he will no doubt enjoy huge capital appreciation too. I'm delighted for him!! John Bishop will be delighted, his house inbetween Middlewich and Northwich is getting purchased by HS2, he'll make £4m on it in 6 years I’ve just looked & seen he bought it around 2011 for £2.25m & they took it off his hands for £6.8m in 2019. In anyone’s books, that’s some markup!

Will the existing line between London and Birmingham remain in place and support stopping services? How close will the new line be to the old one? Yes it will remain in place and allow an increase in stopping services. I'm not sure. I do have the detailed plans for the section running through a good part of Cheshire area where I am

It is due to loop around the North of Stafford and then to the South of the City around Yarnfield, Swynnerton, Beech etc to Crewe. There is a major construction base planned for the fields around where the M6 passes through Yarnfield, which should mean total chaos in the area for the next 10 years or so. There is supposed to be a relief road built around the site, but, if there are to be any economies made to the budget I suspect that will be one of the first things cut. Cynical? Moi?

Not to be completed by 2035-2041 technology will be outdated , the biggest white elephant since the M6 Toll Road , as they said congestion will be a thing of the past when the Toll Road is completed , what bollocks that was The building of extra roads has never reduced congestion.

Not to be completed by 2035-2041 technology will be outdated , the biggest white elephant since the M6 Toll Road , as they said congestion will be a thing of the past when the Toll Road is completed , what bollocks that was The building of extra roads has never reduced congestion. It does for a while but short-term thinking and planning often means that a project is out of date by the time it's completed. The perfect example of this is the M6. They've now made large parts of it 4 lane by turning the hard shoulder into the 4th lane, which has resulted in multiple deaths when vehicles break down and cars can't get to a safe space. OS.

It was always an appalling choice of capital investment to save 15 mins on a journey between Birmingham and London! If the money was there to be spent improved regional connections was a much better option.

Now we have a railway from just outside of Birmingham, to just outside London, that is now projected to be slower than what we have now (city to city), with half the number of trains, and who knows how much a ticket will be, at a cost that will end up being way more than the £72bn, and destroying vast swathes of countryside and homes in the process. I wouldn't be surprised to see it hit £200bn

It could always be a non story like the one a couple of weeks ago about not going into Euston It's a lovely idea and a no brainer however UK Plc has to have some element of certainty of service and as we've been reminded with all the recent strikes that's not likely to be the case with the railways.

I never understood this either. From my understanding, it's more about capacity than speed increases but for some crazy reason, it was sold as knocking off a few mins journey time for passengers. In this day and age, people can be productive as they travel if they even need to travel at all. Obviously the cost isn't just dead money either, you have massive job creation involved which is why unions love these big infrastructure projects.

Very true. Building roads is not the answer. Roads are like hoarders - no matter how big a hoarder's house is they wil always fill it with shite, similarly a road scheme designed for capacity in 10 years always seems to be clogged up in 5. Most of the money spent on capital road building would be better off invested in funding public transport initatives..but, not like the HSR line. I helped to build a HSR line in Taiwan and that just swallowed money...lots of expats who got in early doors living in swanky 3BR penthouses in the middle of the cities. I went 2 years into the project and ended up in a 1BR flat among the Taiwanese because the project was running out of money. HSR2 will be no different. Every mega-project tells whopping lies re. final cost estimate just to get the final investment decision approved. Once approved it is very difficult to go back although very often the right thing to do is to cancel the project. Unfortunately, human nature being what it is means that everyone involved in the project has a vested interest in perpetuating the lie re. cost and return on investment.

We remain committed to delivering HS2 services to Euston, and will address affordability pressures to ensure the overall spending profile is manageable. A complete waste of money as was obvious from the day it was announced. I used to be a regular business traveller from the north west to London and everybody i spoke to said shaving all small amount of time off the journey was pointless, what we all agreed we wanted was better wifi on the trains to make better use of the travel time. The concept was crap, the execution a farce, and the sheer amount of money wasted a scandal. Yet we all know that not one person will be held accountable for it.
There are other threads on here running back to the inception where I and others have said this many times. That's not anyone being clever, it was obvious from the nonsensical business case that was put forward at the outset.
Successive governments had chance to pull it, yet they've all dithered and cowardly refused to acknowledge the obvious. It's around 2.5k for every person in the country, and now we hear it'll never even achieve its original albeit ill conceived objectives.
It makes me sick to think about how many pockets have been lined, how the taxpayers have been cheated, and how the cunts responsible will be laughing all the way to bank.
