Agreed - Hugh is a one-off so pointless trying to compare anybody else to him, just took them on their own merit and they gave it everything.

Went to the O2 Academy in Brum last night for the Stranglers supported by Dr Feelgood, great night, hot sweaty venue pretty much full, ok it's only half the Stranglers but they put on a cracking show, nice mix of new & old. Dr Feelgood still rocking it too, great to see the old boys still enjoying playing to a full house. A bit older these days so sat in the balcony, plenty of action in the mosh though, can't beat it. I follow Hugh as a preference to what remains of the Stranglers. Dr Feelgood have no original members, so effectively are a tribute group, so I follow Wilko Johnson when he’s on tour. Much better back in the day when we were all one tribe 😄

Slow readers club tonight Sugarmill Supported by the excellent ShadowParty (featuring the two out of New Order who aren't Bernard, Steve or Gillian, Denise Johnson of A Certain Ratio/Primal Scream/New Order fame, plus two American dudes out of Devo). They're on at 8pm, so get down early and watch them.

Wilko Johnson at Cliffs Pavilion in Southend last Friday. Wilko always delivers and its was great to see him play in the Dr Feelgood heartlands. And he's still as wired as he ever was..☺

Very energetic and loud and people from 18 to 65 in the audience.

Should have been UFO last Sunday but I got taken out from behind by a stupid woman & her trolley in Asda. Sent me sprawling. No permanent damage but it shook me up and I missed the gig. I'm getting old, 5 years ago I'd just have stumbled then given her a mouthful.
Next one Boff (ex-Chumbawamba) and Leon Rosselson, Chapel Allerton, Leeds in a couple of weeks.

James at the Viccy Hall last Friday. Very good but Tim Booth did his ankle in so he was sat for quite a bit of it but still pulled it off.

Any one who used to frequent Shelleys in Longton back in teh early to mid 80s before the rave heads got hold of it will remember bands like the Meteors, Guana Batz, Demented Are Go and King Kurt, all now penciled in to play Stoke again after many, many years, time to dig out your check shirt and go for a 'rumble' if your back and legs can still manage it!!!

Tim Burgess last night at The Pink Room in Manchester. Mint. .... Charlatans were excellent when I saw them in Brisbane last August (better than Happy Mondays earlier this month) I didn't even know that Tim Burgess did any solo stuff until my lady got the tickets, to top off a great night out, we bumped into Mark Collins (Charlatans guitarist) in a boozer around the corner and also Tim himself outside the gig later, they were both really sound blokes and down to earth just like I thought they were. Great band and right up there with the best in my opinion. Did you not enjoy the Monday's then?

Not a musical one, but saw Gary Delaney last night in Stafford. He was brilliant. If you've got a broad sense of unflappable humour go watch him. Hes on at the new vic in may. Think I might have to go again as I must have missed half the material thru laughing so much.

Stillmarillion at Eleven last night. My first time at this cracking little venue, it's a credit to Stoke. One of the best Stillmarillion gigs I've been to. The band were on excellent form and the crowd made up of their loyal fans and a good number of first-timers were in good voice. Great value for money. On stage for just over two hours and only £11.00 with T Shirts at £10.00.
Promised to return next year and if they can do it again after a home game so much the better.

An officer's mess dinner, for past and present officers at an army base just outside Nuneaton.
I've never seen so many colonels, brigadiers and top brass in one place at the same time .... the band sounded great and we were very well appreciated.
(Royal Fusilier Band) three weeks ago.

Leon Rosselson and the Commoners Choir last Friday. I avoided Asda pre-gig in case there were any more wayward shopping trolleys.
A mere 36 years after discovering Leon, I finally got to see him. Voice a bit wavery, problems tuning his guitar a bit meandering at times ... but a darned good show for an 84 year old ! Methinks I'd best not leave it another 36 years before I try and see him again.
Commoners Choir were excellent.
Greatest entertainment was probably the audience. A proper pc, right-on brigade. Including a couple in their sixties with matching green dungarees. No doubt made out of recycled alfalfa or similar. My leather jacket definitely got some disapproving looks.
Next one in the diary is Billy Bragg in November. I'm sure there'll be more in between, though.
