They were great, easily fill a Blues Pills sized void in the scene. Not sure which is Badger, suppose it depends on the day of the week? I’m the drummer. Thanks😉 How do you know when the stage is level? When the drummer dribbles out of both sides of his mouth.

I'm never going to a gig this year at this rate. Fairport Convention, who I replaced Fugees with to save wasting a London trip, have just cancelled for this week. At least that means I can go to Chris Helme and John Power in Hanley instead (assuming that doesn't get cancelled), and then hopefully Sea Power on Sunday...
My cancelled or postponed gigs:
Wytches Bob Mould Battle Beast Fugees Fairport Convention Yann Tiersen God Is An Astronaut Pearl Charles

Going to see Foals in Edinburgh in April, as long as Sturgeon and Covid allow.

The Damn Truth at Foxlowe Arts in leek at 7:30 tonight. Will let you know how I get on, strange place for a bunch from Toronto to pitch up. They're supporting King King on their tour at the moment so I think their promoter will have snuck this in. Would be interested to hear what you think - I quite like what I've heard on the internet - they are playing the Lending Rooms in Leeds on Tuesday this coming week and I might be able get to the gig. Any good then?

I finally made it to gigs at the weekend! Both were at risk because of the weather. Chris Helme couldn't get to Hanley because all the trains were cancelled from York, so someone drove a 240-mile round trip to pick him up (hero). Playing mostly The Seahorses, he was good, as was local Andy Stonier in support. But I found John Power mostly boring even though he played most of All Change. I'm not sure why, but maybe the songs don't work that well acoustically?
Sea Power in Hebden Bridge last night was at risk due to flood warnings. Getting there was my scariest driving experience. The winds gave my upper body a good workout, trying to keep my car in a straight line. And the route to Hebden Bridge included "England's longest continuous incline" which was often a river on the way down. Water was also whipped up well over the height of my car from a reservoir beside the road.
Hopefully seeing The Coral, Paul Draper (his new album is up there with Mansun's best methinks) and Sophie Ellis-Bextor soon.

Drove home to Manchester from Hedben last night, probably around the time you were arriving. Not a nice journey in that weather. My other half's friend who lives there says a siren that goes off when the flooding starts, much like an air raid siren. Lovely place Hebden and Heptonstall where we went for a pint but fuck me it's hilly. Felt like I was in a Hovis ad walking to the pub.

Saw Dry Cleaning in Brum at the end of last month. Very good. You can tell the musicians have been around in different line-ups for a good few years, really tight.
And Florence's dry delivery works really well. An hour is perfect. Any more I think it might get a bit samey. Much like seeing The Fall, to whom they have rightly been compared a fair bit.
Good stuff.

The Coral - the sound seemed to decline after a couple of songs. Disappointing to only hear 2 songs from the new album, which I think might be The Coral's best. Sophie Ellis-Bextor - good stuff, with a couple of tracks decided by the spin of a roulette wheel (from a choice of about 30 songs). One it brought up was Ain't Nobody by Rufus & Chaka Khan, and it sounded pretty good. Mark Draper - I love his new album, Cult Leader Tactics, but the songs didn't seem to work acoustically (I hoped this would be a full band set too). Even the Mansun tracks didn't sound all that good. Supported by Love Against Ruin (former Placebo drummer) who I enjoyed more. God Is an Astronaut - disappointingly not All is Violent, All is Bright played in full as originally advertised, but the gig was postponed from the 15th anniversary 2 years ago. A mostly great set anyway, blistering at times. After finally making it to a few gigs, today I've had both this weekend postponed (Feeder and then Texas). I found John Power mostly boring even though he played most of All Change. I'm not sure why, but maybe the songs don't work that well acoustically? Urgh. He went 20 minutes over the curfew too, and I got a £30 parking fine through the post as a result.

Went to see the several times delayed The Alarm gig in Brum at Digbeth Institute . Excellent but bloody frustrating as was a 6pm.doors with support I wanted to see - Dave Sharp who was in the Alarm years ago. Didn't get back from game til after 6 and roadworks meant I ended up chancing the train and didn't arrive til 745 hence missing Sharpy. Apparently they use it as nightclub after gigs but that clearly wasn't the case last night so Alarm did 1hr50 and off before 10 . Excellent show and a great set , only criticism was they played 35 songs but many of them were truncated versions eg missing a verse/chorus so was a little frustrating. But Mike Peters is always a compelling performer and thoroughly enjoyed .

Went to see the wonderful Joan As Policewoman in Bath last night. Seven times now I think. Great band with her as usual including the great Parker Kindred on drums who played with Jeff Buckley, Joan's old squeeze.

Pat McManus at the Tivoli, Buckley last week. Formerly of Mama's Boys back in the day(for anyone of a 80's rock persuasion). I think he played in Stoke the week before, but I couldn't get to it.
Top bloke, still smiling and absolutely no ego.
I was planning on seeing WASP in a couple of weeks, but that's been postponed, so nothing else on the horizon now.

Well I finally got to see a life gig last night Lloyd Cole at the Albert Hall in Manchester although to be technical I saw the second half of his set.... I spent the first half of the set stuck in a lift at the Great Northern car park across the road waiting for an engineer to turn up to extricate us.
I'm doomed, the last 5 gigs have cancelled and the one before that turned up but I didn't because I had Covid.
He was good last night but disappointingly it was an acoustic set and just didn't have the vibrancy associated with his tunes. The voice is still great.

What a bugger mate, although I did have a chuckle. Often thought of seeing him but I love the electric, guitar driven Commotions so would probably be disappointed. Got Low a week on Saturday and they're always brilliant.

He was good last night but disappointingly it was an acoustic set and just didn't have the vibrancy associated with his tunes. The voice is still great. I felt the same after 8 postponements/cancellations before I finally made it to a gig, which was then crap and went past the usual curfew and I got a parking fine. The last I counted I was on 13 postponements/cancellations, but Marvellous at the theatre and other stuff has been cancelled since. And now the rearrangements are clashing with other stuff. Recently I've seen: Texas at The Victoria Hall in Hanley - I really didn't want to go, especially after it's multiple rearrangements. But it was very good! Texas played the Southside album in full as support to themselves - I don't like much at all from that album, but the way they did it sounded great. Then they played a greatest hits plus new material set, which was most excellent. Sharleen Spiteri is entertaining with her crowd banter too. Sea Power at The Institute in Birmingham. A pretty standard gig by their standards but pretty much everything sounded great. The Great Skua is transcendental. Nothing at Dead Wax in Birmingham. Crikey, Digbeth was noisy late on Easter Sunday afternoon. Raves all over the place. Nothing have released two of my favourite ever albums, but the songs don't seem to work anywhere near as well live and at times, rather than the at times beautiful and subtle shoegaze on record, seem like a noisy mess to my ears. The Wytches tomorrow night at Eleven in Tunstall should be good. Next week I (hopefully) have 3 gigs in 3 nights, with Still Corners, Lost in Kiev & Maserati double-header, and then Feeder. 4 favourite bands in 3 nights - surely that's too good to be true? I'm also excited about Gilbert O'Sullivan (of "Alone Again (Naturally)" fame) in Crewe. I dunno why, but I didn't expect him to turn up in Crewe.

Nothing Rhymed was one of the best songs from the 70s and I remember Get Down being played to death on the jukebox He's been doing 2 sets and around 30 songs in total on the US leg of his tour. Both of those tracks are in his sets. I don't know many songwriters who can seemingly effortlessly write so many good pop songs. Even his latest album, released in 2018 has a few. Paul Steel who I'm listening to now must be the modern equivalent and also released his latest album in 2018. Although he's only released 2 albums in 10 years, he's written for Mika and Elton John amongst others.

Last night, baddeley green WMC. Tribute to Thr Jam ‘a band called malice’ quality 8/10 but performance, effort, showmanship and ability to create atmosphere 10/10 I would urge people to support venues such as this (and Jollees Stoke as well as Eleven near Goldenhill) as these clubs need all the support they can get. Unfortunately these gigs are not always superbly advertised, I’m sure there’s a lot of ex mods and punks locally as well as genuine Jam fans who wouldn’t even have realised this event was on?
