I don't get the Donald Trump attraction at all. Why are so many people obsessed with him, particularly British people who have never taken an interest in American politics in their life. What's the appeal? We have a real global problem with young naive men glorifying and celebrating self serving tyrans. Its not just Trump either we have the same in the UK with the BOJO fan club. Or the same with that kickboxing weirdo Andrew someone. Its very worrying indeed. Especially considering alot of the fan boys tend to be working class people that get oppressed by the very men they celebrate. Critical thinking isn't a thing for many anymore. Buzz words and finding a common enemy to blame, but never the wealthy dictators, seems to be the soup of the day. Difficult to argue with Bayern's point above, but added to that is the 'attraction' that these personality cult politicians cultivate by positioning themselves (laughably) as being anti-establishment, which, if nothing else, underlines Bayern's point.

But their idea of anti establishment is usually: - Less taxes - Less spending on public services - More authoritian laws which restrict human rights, employee rights as well as rights to protest and such. Its not anti establishment in the slightest. If anything it's pro establishment minus any sort of public services or basic rights. Pro slavery I'd call it.

Me too The issue is where he's sourced those funds apparently. Maybe if he gets away with this his supporters should just dispense with the pretence and crowdfund a prostitute account for him Some expert on the radio earlier said the issue was that the pay off was treated as legal expenses in his accounts which is fraud. The pursuit of Trump sounded incredibly complicated with many facets and a political side to it. Nixon and Bill Clinton were also mentioned making the point that pursuing ex presidents was a pursuit that the country should probably best avoid and had deliberately avoided in the past. Yes, I mentioned earlier that I heard some chap from Keele talking about the pay off. You can't really have someone using political funds that their political supporters have donated in good faith to pay hush money to someone they've slept with and not expect some sort of criticism to be levelled can you? Isn't he the first ever ex president to face criminal charges? Nixon should also have been jailed imo.

Their support for people like Trump or Johnson because they're somehow "not part of the establishment", despite having grown up with all the privilege and favour that being right at the heart of the establishment conveys on anyone, is difficult to fathom. As a political tactic it's been spectacularly successful however, although, again, it only really serves to reinforce Bayern's blunt point.

How bad was Obama when you’ve got america running to elect trump
The problem with modern politics is people won’t accept what has been voted for and instead of knuckling down working with what you’ve got and waiting for the next election to get rid they spend more time fighting the system and you dont get anywhere.

He benefitted from the electoral college system (same with Bush).

One could argue that the statement of America running for Trump isn't fair when he was unable to achieve as many votes as the lady he defeated. 😉 Electoral college, Proportional Representation, Parliamentary/Presidential all have pro's and con's and we would be here all week. Instead, we can just sit back and watch the tangerine ball bag make a tit of himself. LAW AND ORDER!

I don't know why the left struggle to accept the idea that everyone has their time. Appreciate the left loves authoritarian regimes that last decades but most ordinary people don't want that. Trump served his 5 years and on balance it was a successful period for the US. He made some unpresidential comments and it cost him dearly. Since losing the election (rightly or wrongly), he's followed Tony Blair's footsteps in not being able to let go. Time to make way for the DeSantis empire. Exciting times ahead. Get ready for all out war on woke 😉 Trump extends his lead over DeSantis to 20 points. Is it still exciting times ahead? Switching back to Donald yet? The Republican Party would be mad to put Trump ahead of DeSantis.

MAGA are a Party within a Party like ERG with a different agenda than mainstream What ever people think of the merits or demerits of the current case New York is the Major Financial Centre in the World and it can't risk its reputation that New York Registered Corporations can alter Bank Records and Financial Statements for Political purposes. Like Bozo lying to Parliament its not in doubt its whether it was intentional. Same with Trump the deed was done, his Lawyer who facilitated it served time for it. The only question to be answered is did he know beforehand It's a pity the London Regulators don't take a leaf out of their Book in investigating the Laundromat For Trump personally it has worked to invigorate his base ( and Bank Balance) and is Polling twice as much as DeSantis. This case even if found guilty the punishment is not crippling Much more serious is the Georgia case with Trump on Tape demanding they "Find" the required Votes and whether he incited the January 6 Riots The bottom line is this is a gift to the Democrats. If Trump manages to legally get on the Pimary Ballots he will most likely defeat DeSantis and even if by some fluke he didn't he will stand as an Independent thus splitting the Vote.

Good programme on C4 at the minute, live coverage. Yep, I was kind of left thinking the 2 legal 'experts' didn't seem to think Alvin Bragg had a whole lot did they? Although its a job to work out who is political and who is not among 'experts' these days. My sense is this was all a huge mistake by those out to get Trump. It may back fire in a very big way.

Seems there's a lot out to get him, sounds like he's being sued by quite a collection. Who knows how that will play out with his current and ex-supporters. I can't see him gaining any new ones thanks to it, regardless of the outcomes.

Of course he did, he's Donald Trump. - Is that an offence? Yes, in a driving offence kind of a way. And all for what? All publicity is good publicity and he got a free election rally where he delivered his usual rant from the teleprompter. Best for the Democrats to leave this stuff alone and instead put all their energy in to telling people why they should vote for them. Just my opinion.

I'm not sure in this particular case about all publicity being good publicity but then I don't see him as anything but a hopelessly obese, orange, dangerous, narcissistic prick to be honest. Others on the fence about him might be swayed, I haven't seen his latest speech from last night yet tbh.

I read an article over the weekend that seemed to suggest that his shine was wearing off a bit for these kind of voters. Obviously, those who are completely dug in will never change their view and use any kind of conviction as further 'evidence' that he's being persecuted. Much like the situation we have in our own country with our respective leaders, any kind of young, dynamic leader with a vision standing against Trump would, you'd think, be a shoe-in. In that kind of scenario, even Americans would eventually see that Trump is purely in it for his own personal glorification, nothing to do with the country whatsoever.

Best for the Democrats to leave this stuff alone and instead put all their energy in to telling people why they should vote for them. Just my opinion. The point is there is compelling evidence that he broke the law. If the New York DA doesn't press charges (which is his job) he's either saying some people are above the law or the rule of law no longer applies to anybody. I agree of all things he's done this is probably the most trivial and politically plays into his hands in terms of portraying him as a victim but given the evidence the DA had to act - the implications of turning a blind eye are far worse for the credibility of the American legal system. Those responsible for applying the law can't be stopped from doing their job - that has to come before the politics. There's a big principle at stake here - the law is supposed to act independently of the political establishment and apply to everyone. Trump personally and in terms of his political agenda wants to operate outside the law - he sees himself as above it. If he gets his way America is on its way to dismantling the rule of law and implementing a dictatorship. The current charges may be trivial but the implications of not enacting the law isn't - it's just letting Trump put himself above it which is exactly where he wants to be.

After watching his Mar-a-Lago rant in real time last night, I've come to the conclusion that the scumball is becoming more and more like Hitler by the day. He has that certain je ne sais quoi that appeals to the nationalistic streak of society where there are no bounds to what they will do to gain power. Every Republican in The House and Senate is terrified of him and know that if they turn against him they will lose a large minority of their support that got them elected. His rant against the DA who was prosecuting put the Judge's family in danger from some of his more extreme followers. That's what Hitler did... isolate his opponents and make them so afraid of his crazy base that very few were left to oppose him. I think it was a mistake to charge him on this flimsy stuff and they should have concentrated on expediting the two more serious charges to bring the bastard to heel.
I'm fervently hoping the US society saw through his rant for what it really was... an egotistic nutcase fighting for his political life. Although in an entirely different way, he's becoming as dangerous to the rest of the democratic free world as Putin and it wouldn't surprise me if he does gain power, that he'll sell Ukraine down the river just as he did to the Kurds. And let's not forget that it was he who negotiated the deal with the Taliban that brought them back to power. Yes, it was Biden who made a complete cockup of the withdrawal from Afghanistan, but he was just carrying out the deal Trump had made with the cunning Taliban, who had no intention of sticking to the deal when they fooled him into signing it.
OS.
