MirrorThe club had a short-list including other candidates, but Hughes was championed by chairman Peter Coates and, ultimately, they did not feel they needed to speak to anyone else.
Also more talk of strict budgets and Jake Livermore floated as a potential target. Very balanced report.

All this talk about how well he did at Blackburn and the great bargain players that he is credited with signing, you have to take with a great pinch of salt. The idea that Hughes himself went and discovered these players is crap! It will have been the work of scouts that identified these players and not Hughes.

Hughes or no Hughes that Mirror article is nothing short of depressing. Every other team will be investing big style, we decide to sell everyone and play a team of 15 year olds. Magic. Livermore and Ince would be magic. I just don't like how we haven't even interviewed anyone else, seems beyond stupid to me.

Who was available and would come B. who would fit in without to much change

The 'not speaking to anyone else' is a big head scratcher for me
I mean, I even make sure I get 3 quotes from window cleaners !

I just think railroading one candidate without even listening to the others whoever they may be is stupid.

Wasn't that the point of sacking Pulis ?

I posted this on another thread - Pulis established the Stoke brand in the PL but wasted the 100m that should have made you a top 8 club. He’d had more than enough time if you were to ever improve etc.. – So justifiably he’s been moved on – Pulis has proved however that dogged defiance beats the 65% possession / 25% win ratio of Martinez. Likewise the brazen Poyet has an agenda probably exceeding his talent and Rafa’s “project” was always at CL level. Hughes despite QPR and the mystery of Fulham has been largely successful so Coates has hung his hat on what he thought is the best candidate to make the best out of the squad Pulis left behind, maintain Stokes PL status and his financial risk/security. All managers are risks – and I’m guessing Coates knows a thing or two about that? FWIW - Hughes is a good appointment despite the views of other fans. Easy to say etc.. but you'll be playing better football and benefitting from a maligned manager with a point to prove. Likewise so will half of next years PL!! Blimey it takes a Hammer to talk some sense I guess you had the same groaning and moaning when big Sam was appointed and look how well he's done.

Bayern mate, there were no other realistic candidates Poyet. Easy. And as StokeMark says You get 3 quotes from the window cleaner. Even if it was someone like Martinez who is clearly going Everton, interview to see what he says. In doing it You might learn something Yourself from spending a few hours with other football people talking about Your club.

And according to some most people were against the initial and especially the return of pulis so it's surprising how many rimmers there were.

Wasn't that the point of sacking Pulis ? Do we want radical, overnight change though Mark, leaving a new man with drastically new ideas to try and sort out a squad that isn't built for possession football? Or do we want a period of transition? People are acting like Hughes is Pulis mark 2 but while there are certain similarities there are loads of massive differences in terms of how they set up as well. His teams are more fluid, less one dimensional, score more goals and actually give the midfielders something to do.

A couple of decent signings a good start to the season and Hughes will no longer be the naughty little boy

I hope people are as forgiving with Hughes as we were with TP at the end of last season.

If I was Harry I'd shut my mouth, a remy, more interested in raping (alledeged), a samba more interested in money and a pretty useless jermaine jenas.

What the hell. You can't rid of half your current team and bring a whole load of replacements in. It's QPR all over again.
Don't say you weren't warned.

As long as he gets the backing of the crowd, but of course he will because this board only represents the "vocal minority" after all.

That's what TP would've had to do. We're trying to move Palacios out, KJ was clearly out of his long term plans, Owen has retired, Whitehead is a free agent, Nzonzi is unsettled and wants a move, Sorenson could depart and Begovic may well be off to a bigger club. Are you living on another planet?
