Massively underwhelmed after hoping so much for the oft quoted 'vibrant, young manager'
I can see the logic but was desperate for a 'heart over head' change of direction and to see some real change. I don't like the bloke and feel that he has few redeeming qualities as an individual. If he delivers the goods then fair enough but I can't see past this all ending in tears. Tbf that was only by the media and not the club.

Can we please stop calling him by his nickname, I hate the fucker with a passion (always have) and referring to him as that is making life unbearable. If he is our new manager, and I have to put up with him, can we get a new one? How about spunky Agree mate - it's irritating to say the least that all of a sudden he's 'our best mate' when, lets face it, we all thought he was a cunt before he was linked to Stoke. He needs to earn that sort of familiarity first IMHO

Best of luck to him. He'll need it with all of these fans who are on his back long before he even signs up

MirrorThe club had a short-list including other candidates, but Hughes was championed by chairman Peter Coates and, ultimately, they did not feel they needed to speak to anyone else.
Also more talk of strict budgets and Jake Livermore floated as a potential target.

A crap appointment but I get the feeling that Hughes' tenure at Stoke will be a short one. He will either be a success and fuck off at the first sniff of a better offer, or be a disaster and leave next summer.
Either way, can't see this one lasting folks.

Jake Livermore is a potential target?
Great start if true. I was very impressed with him during our Carling Cup game 2 seasons ago and commented then that he could be a player to get on loan, or permanently if Spurs would let him go.

Pulis had to go, he had reached his ceiling. The next appointment is a different subject altogether of the available candidates rafa and RDM didnt want it.
A poyet or Martinez would require too much drastic change A team like stoke cannot afford to go for an unproven lower league manager
So who the hell was left
MON or someone equally uninspiring
Mark Hughes is absolutly the correct choice of what was available, he will attempt everything we lambasted pulis for, players in correct positions trying to win away games whilst we won't need a massive change in playing style.
His appointment does not justify keeping pulis. He gets my support
He may be a cunt but he's now our cunt.
I do hope though we are appointing some decent back room staff in addition to his cronies.

Anyone brave/daft enough to suggest this is not an appointment made by Peter Coates? I bet Mark Cartwright is delighted by the fact that the TPFC have now someone else to take their frustrations out on.

I put my hands up and say he wouldnt be my first choice but he certainly wouldn't be my last (ONeill, Lennon, McCleish anyone?).
He's here now and he's not going anywhere so can we please get behind him rather than slag him off at every opportunity.
There's a number of reasons why I think we're progressing
- image. Tone for all his good points ( fundraiser, the Villa game) had a poor image. Starting with the baseball cap and shell suit and finishing with the style of play. I can't believe anyone could say we were good to watch over the last 2 seasons. Now I'm not saying Hughes has teams playing like Barcelone but it'll be a big improvement.
- Confidence. Yes he is arrogant but in the PL you sometimes need a bit of confidence. Tone did have a habit of putting us down. Not good when your trying to attract players.
- Coaches. TP just had yes men like Kemp and Rudge. Hughes will bring a better team.
- Square pegs in round holes. I don't have any reason to believe this will happen with Hughes.
- Contacts. He seems to be able to spot a bargain. Zabaletta and Kompany for example.
Exciting times ahead I think. He might not be Martinez but I think that would have been a step too far. Too many changes too our squad and style could have been disasterous this way it's more gradual. A winger, LB and striker and well looK a far better side.

He is a detestable cunt, but now he's ours..
Lets see what he does, we can probably attract a better quality of player with him and he's well connected. If we get Arsenal at home and he kicks off with Wenger then opinion will change.
We've got to give him a chance, for our own sake as much as anything!

Did TP not say in his Sentinel interview to get behind the new manager?
So Stafford and all the other Pulis lovers are directly disobeying the capped messiah in not doing so.
He will be cross!!!

Personally, Mark Hughes wasn't my first choice as Tony Pulis' successor, or my 2nd. Anyway, surely the man deserves a chance, he hasn't even been appointed yet and people are already saying 'Hughes out'. If you ignore his time at QPR, the man actually has a good record and has rarely finished outside in the top 10 in the Premier League. Moaning about it won't change anything either so let's all give the man a chance and get behind the might Potters! Go'arn Stoke!! Vis unita fortior.

That Mirror article mentioned the link with Tom Ince... would be good if we could sign him and Livermore.

Hughes or no Hughes that Mirror article is nothing short of depressing. Every other team will be investing big style, we decide to sell everyone and play a team of 15 year olds. Magic.

Well, it's disappointing. I wanted rid of Pulis but in the end the Coates/Pulis friendship was too close to allow us to do this properly.
Most clubs would have done this way more cynically and actually thought about who they wanted in before getting rid of the encumbent.
Instead we've pulled the trigger when there was very little on the market.
Bright spots? Hughes was ALWAYS Coates choice, he gave the others chance to sound out other, younger, Latin options, nothing came of it. So to all those suggesting PC is in anything other than complete control, it's bollocks.
Hughes is underwhelming but he will be hungry, and have much to prove. He will know that failure here will be the death knell for his top flight career. He has been given a remit financially which seemed to fit him at Blackburn.
Lets hope for the best and get behind the boys. It's going to take some start for me to sing his name...I mean... He is an absolute git of bloke. But that's the way it is, let's give him a fair crack of the whip and see what he can do.

Well I can't get my head around this appointment, I think most of us felt it was time for a change, but I think we were expecting something different!
Not quite sure of rational with this, of course most people will get behind him, which is the right thing, however there is going to a pretty big division in the fans and it well go downhill very quickly if we start badly!
The next few weeks are massive for this club and I think our future will be judged on what happens in the transfer market in and out in the coming weeks. That alone in my mind will define our season
Good luck to Hughes, lets just hope it starts well!!
Go on Stoke!

I posted this on another thread -
Pulis established the Stoke brand in the PL but wasted the 100m that should have made you a top 8 club.
He’d had more than enough time if you were to ever improve etc.. – So justifiably he’s been moved on – Pulis has proved however that dogged defiance beats the 65% possession / 25% win ratio of Martinez.
Likewise the brazen Poyet has an agenda probably exceeding his talent and Rafa’s “project” was always at CL level.
Hughes despite QPR and the mystery of Fulham has been largely successful so Coates has hung his hat on what he thought is the best candidate to make the best out of the squad Pulis left behind, maintain Stokes PL status and his financial risk/security.
All managers are risks – and I’m guessing Coates knows a thing or two about that?
FWIW - Hughes is a good appointment despite the views of other fans. Easy to say etc.. but you'll be playing better football and benefitting from a maligned manager with a point to prove. Likewise so will half of next years PL!!

Oh come on, there is no real suggestion that we are doing anything other than adopting a far more sensible approach, ie, not paying 10 million for 30 year olds. There will still be a decent budget of 15 million or so + sales.
