I had a Golden Honorary Membership at The Place for a few years, free entry any night at any time, was brilliant! ;D We used to get 3 of us in on it regularly with a bit of sleight of hand Inset was owned by John Donnelly at that time, believe he had an equally salubrious establishment in Longton at the same time, can't remember the name of it, down a side street somewhere near Woolies. In it's heyday The Place had to have been one of the be st nightclubs in the country imho. The Place. Way ahead of it's time & the Basement was a prelude to early House Probably up there with the best in the country at the time The Place the place to be, anyone remember the Persians who use to frequent the place in the mid to late 70's, many went to the College knife carriers , fucking hell the liberals on here would have had a fit if they were around then talk about racism now that was racism.

I know that, the The Place nightclub was superb however that is what it was like back in the day just telling it how it was, would never have happened today quiet rightly to, Pete Fielding head bouncer great lad, the Adultery in Burslum was an interesting night out.

Satchmo's for me.
The last time I was in there a friend of mine was served a pint with a hair floating in it. The hair was that long that it literally went from the top to the bottom of the pint glass.
And that same night, the bouncer was driving around the car park leaning out of his window and hitting people with a plastic crocodile.
Fucking bizarre night.

El Sids, which became Hudsons El Syds. I still have my membership card. They advertised a regular punk night (tuesdays?) but had to cancel after the first one because the massed pogoing caused the dj's records to jump. It was rocking, literally. They had the floor strengthened and restarted it a few weeks later.

The 007, in the early 70s was a converted terraced house. When you got in you went upstairs into what would be the main bedroom where some right old slapper got her kit off. After she finished she didnt bother putting a robe on, she just went and stood at the bar starkers which was in the corner of the room.

I remember the sleazy advert in the Sentinel when I was at school. Did they ever have bands on? I have the odd idea Chicken Shack played there in the late '60s. I am probably mixing it up with somewhere else though.

They had this corner of a big bedroom which on this occasion had some local bird flaunting it, but i guess they might have got a band in there but also the maximum audience would have been around 25. It was really small and like you say, extremely cheesy.

It was really small and like you say, extremely cheesy. I must be mixing it up with somewhere else then unless it moved to bigger premises at some point. I remember my dad and uncle had an ongoing private joke at the time about the place that I never got to the bottom of. Probably a good job!

Pioneers at Clubbing us Potters. The Golden Torch, The Place, Jolees, Shelley's, The Void etc. Iconic places. They are part of our oral culture, I've heard so many stories about them. And seen photos. And witnessed some.
What's happening now? I'm out of the loop.

I used to finish work about 11.30. I had to bang like hell on the door to get someone to open up though!

one word... ZANZIBAR! one of the maddest clubs I have ever been to and guaranteed to kick off every night! If it didn't go off in the club, it was bound to across the road in the chippy! Usually a load of Knutton/Silverdale lads scrapping Remember the train that ran around the top of the bar and filmed everyone so you could watch it in the main room??! Had brilliant nights at Void/Golden and in particular seeing Roger Sanchez there on Boxing Day. Time & Space had some brilliant nights too - David Morales upstairs whilst Paul Oakenfold play downstairs. You don't get those listings in Stoke any more... Maxims, Ritzy's, Hippodrome, Place, Metropolis, Valentino's (with the fair outside!?!).. Some great nights back in the day

Haven't seen The Heavy Steam Machine mentioned on this thread yet? Entirely possible I've missed it obviously.
Only went there once, about '76 ish, DJ Emperor Roscoe was on, amazed we got in cos we were well under 18, by the time I was old enough I think it had shut.

Correct, it was famous the length of the country for its Golden nights with top quality djs of the time. Had some of my best nights out in there on a Saturday night with good friends. Not forgetting the legendary "North" nights

Come on guys! Is no one going to fess up to the odd night at the Queens in Basford??!!! Guaranteed a fish supper at the end of the night..;-)
Thing is it was never as bad as people made it out to be, late 90s/early 00s Friday nights were always packed out, queues at the door. Bouncers were real old school, there was one guy who was the double of Bruce Willis. They were pretty strict on dress codes, trousers, shoes, collars and always suspicious if you were in a big group of lads and didn't know the faces. To be fair, they never had any trouble until they relaxed the dress code and started getting a lot of Eastern Europeans in. Then it just went downhill from there. They tried to turn it into a live music place having cover bands on a Saturday night, a bit like The Limelight in Crewe, Saw QE2, Limehouse Lizzy, Mentallica and a few others there. shame it didn't last but by the end the Friday nights were sometimes down to 50 people in if lucky.
